Annual Meeting Minutes continued…

Pastoral Team Reports: Senior Pastor: Pastor Zimmermann remarks on how God has richly blessed us. Our focus is reaching people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Last year 32 people accepted Christ. There have been 5 so far in January. Vision 2022: Pastor

Zimmermann will be talking to people for ideas. The purpose is to take ground away from the enemy. Music camp has been very successful. There are 5 professionals in our congregation. Could we be a church of camps? How are we going to reach out in some sort of local way? The beginning of the focus will be three-fold: Reaching the Lost, Equipping the Found, Celebrating Jesus. Pastor Zimmermann mentioned considering adding on a multi-use room. He read Prov. 16:9 and Ps. 37:23-24. Art Ebert prays for pastor and River Valley church in general.

Disciplemaking Ministries

Adult: Pastor Atkins thanks the teachers for their work and states that we have very high quality teachers. He wants the Small Groups to grow and thrive. There are many small groups available. Pastor Atkins mentions Elexio and what help it has been and will be in the future. The Women’s Ministry and Men’s Ministry will be evaluating what they are doing and what their goals are. He wants the ministries to be not just another commitment. He wants them to be necessary for your life through connection and fellowship. Junior and Senior High: Pastor Golemi states that teaching apologetics to high school students is one of his favorite things to do. In the Middle School group, he began teaching Heroes of Faith but switched to teaching basic tenets of Christian faith to give them a foundation. He has initiated an incentive program as well as guiding principles. He thanks the leaders, and Is planning brainstorming and training. The Youth retreats have been wonderful for the youth. Five students accepted Christ at the Middle School Retreat.

Children: Robin Walker states she is honored to be in this role. She showed a Powerpoint presentation on what a typical Sunday is in Discovery Land. The AWANA ministry is going strong. Eighty kids attend AWANA on Wed. nights.

X. Ministry Team Reports:

Impacts: A written report was received. Mike Friedl went over the report for 2016. Seventy-one individuals prayed or advocated for international workers, which totals over 2,400 prayers for Thailand. Impacts is committed to support evangelism. Sixteen Thai students that were taught English by the Impacts Team in 2015 have accepted the Lord. There are twelve individuals who are preparing for the mission trip to Thailand in 2017.

Elders: A written report was received. It is the purpose of the Elders to support the pastors and staff. Ron Sokovich spoke regarding changes in the organization of the Elders. They have organized the Elder Board into five broad areas: Administration, Missions, Prayer, Worship, and Connections.

Governing Board: A written report was received. Charlene Flint states that it has been an eventful year. Monthly Governing Board Minutes are posted in the foyer. The church Secretary issues a Summary every quarter. Service and Benevolence: A written report was received. Jeremy Walker thanks not only the deacons and deaconesses but the many, many people helping with events and with meals to those who are sick and to new moms. He stated that he has noticed two things: The Benevolent Committee sees people at their lowest of lows (possible eviction, electricity being cut off), and their highest of highs (babies being born, weddings). Twelve thousand dollars was distributed in 2016. The deacons and deaconesses are looking forward to continuing to serve the Lord.

Trustees: A written report was received. Joe Haberkorn thanks all for financial support and volunteer help and thanks the Trustees for the work they have done this past year. The main emphasis of the Trustees in 2017 is renovating the

XI. 2015 Financial Report: Treasurer, Greg Schroeder, thanks Terri Lott for her role. He also thanks Jen Roberts for all

the bill paying and the Audit Team for their help. Treasurer Schroeder went over highlights of 2016 and highlights of the audit. He introduced Elexio and what it’s used for in giving. As much as I dislike the thought of the Packers not being in the post season, I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the Vikings having spent 13 years of my life in Minnesota. (Even though I never forsook my allegiance to the Packers!) The unforgettable final play of the game that allowed the Vikings to move on to the NFC Championship game, has become known as the “Hail, Millie”. It seems that a 99-year-old lady named Millie has been an avid fan of the Vikings since they were founded 57 years ago. In recognition of her support, Millie was given 2 free tickets to that playoff game, so Millie and her granddaughter excitedly attended. As the TV announcer told Millie’s story and the TV cameras zoomed in on Millie, unfortunately Millie’s granddaughter began waving a hastily made poster right in front of Millie so that she couldn’t be seen on TV. I tell this story because it has been another stellar year at River Valley… bills are being paid, ministries are having success, guests are being welcomed, and chairs are filling. But I don’t want that to put us in a position like Millie’s granddaughter… getting so excited about the moment that we block out the REAL star of the show. Our REAL star is Jesus, not River Valley and definitely not our accomplishments. Jesus said in John 12:32 “…And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” As we celebrate 2017, let’s be sure that it is Jesus is being lifted up and not what we have done. This year, I have seen Jesus “lifted up” at River Valley in so many ways. Some of them include:

• A growing children’s ministry learning the stories of Jesus from people who love to teach about Jesus

• Our second fully funded mission trip to Thailand so that 11 people could share Jesus with a spiritually dark country

• An exciting Youth Ministry where kids are learning to defend Jesus to the world

• Many spiritual growth opportunities offered for adults who want to follow Jesus more closely

• Music camp where 18 kids asked Jesus to be their savior

• Worship teams who focus on the participation of everyone in worshipping Jesus and not performance

• 8 adults who asked Jesus to be their Savior or recommitted their lives to Him

• 21 new members that want to lift up the name of Jesus as part of the River Valley family

• Updated and new church policies and procedures that get “stuff” out of the way so that Jesus can be the center of our attention

• Ushers, greeters and the welcoming team who help guests new to River Valley feel Jesus’ love

• Trustees who kept our facility in tip-top shape so that Jesus can be focused on when we gather and not a worn out, decaying building.

• Finances that are handled decently and in order so that the world will know that we who call Jesus Lord do things right

• Highly generous people who give to our local ministry as well as the Great Commission Fund so that the name of Jesus can be lifted higher than ever before here in Watertown and to the ends of the Earth.

• Deacons and Deaconesses who faithfully serve and teach us to serve Jesus as we take care of those around us. I think we have done a good job of keeping the focus on Jesus this year. In hopes that we can continue to focus on Jesus in 2018, the Lord has laid these goals on my heart:

• Seek Jesus in prayer: personally, as a staff, and as a congregation

SENIOR PASTOR’S REPORT

Rev. David Zimmermann

Page 9: River Valley Alliance Church - Amazon S3 · River Valley Alliance Church Membership December 11, 2017 53 1. Agar-Pratt, Alexandra 2. Agar-Pratt, Justin 3. *Alvarez, Ashley 4. *Alvarez,

Senior Pastor Report continued…

• Community Outreach: As we earnestly go to Jesus in prayer, a sizable portion of that prayer will be to seek the Lord’s direction in reaching out to Watertown with the Gospel. The first step will be to establish an Acts 1:8 Commission. (Acts 1:8b …you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.) We’re moving in the right direction in the “ends of the earth” department, but this commission will seek the Lord in how River Valley can best lift Jesus up to our Jerusalem right here in Watertown and perhaps even to our Samaria, the outcasts in our community. This commission will also look at what we are doing currently to reach out to the community and determine how or if those current ministries need to be strengthened.

• Servant Leaders: Focus on methods to encourage greater involvement from River Valley regular attenders in serving Jesus and training up of the new generation of leaders so that those yet unborn will be able to hear about Jesus’ love for them.

So, let’s make a concerted effort to not cover up Jesus as we celebrate what He has accomplished this year at River Valley. And above all, let’s never lose sight of His greatest accomplishment, securing SALVATION through His death on the cross for all those who place their faith in Him. Let’s keep Jesus lifted up, front and center, WHERE HE BELONGS! So that He can draw more and more and more and more people to Himself. To God ALONE be the glory! Joyfully serving, David Zimmermann

The primary role of the Elders is to support and advise the Pastor and provide spiritual direction for the congregation. The current Elders and their areas of oversight are as follows: Administration Ron Sokovich Missions Bruce Cochrane Connections Dan Ellsworth Prayer/Counseling Justin Roberts Worship Matt Colosky Each elder has given a brief summary of what went on in their area this year:

Administration (Ron Sokovich)

This was the third year of our plan to organize various areas of church administration. In years one and two, we developed an Employee Handbook and revised the constitution and bylaws. This year we have reviewed various policies and procedures. Now that these three years are complete, we will plan to continue to review and revise one area each year.

Missions (Bruce Cochrane)

How do you acknowledge in a few short sentences the accomplishments of the Missions program? This is an impossible task. Missions have again been blessed this year with great support from each of you in the congregation- as should be the case as missions is a churchwide mandate and endeavor. River Valley has been blessed to continue both our local/regional programs and our international ministry. Locally, ministry is all the varied church outreach programs including, but not limited to, the Awana program, music ministry, prayer ministry, counseling services, benevolent support, etc. Our international ministry continues to be strong headed by Mike Friedl. A team of international missionaries from our church to Thailand was fully funded this last summer. We continue to work on developing a more formal structure to aid in ensuring continued financial solidarity as our missions program continues to grow. What a ringing endorsement of the success our church has had. We were blessed to hear from district superintendent Jeff Brown that River Valley is a model for effective international missions. He encouraged us to not only continue to be such a model of Christ’s love to others but to also help sister churches in developing their missions programs. We look forward to your continued active support of all mission activities in this exciting new year.

Connections (Dan Ellsworth)

• Ushers

o Ushers transitioned to supporting three services nicely

o We have updated the policies and procedures of the team

o Future goals

▪ To fully staff each service with 4 – in some cases we are only providing coverage with 3. Please

consider serving

▪ Continue to engage with everyone making the sanctuary a warm and pleasant place to interact

with Jesus our Lord

Elder Report continued…

▪ Continue to enhance security awareness and precautions

• Greeters – Comments from Betsy Ellsworth, Greeter Coordinator

o Implemented new connection/welcoming program for guests

o We have greeters at all doors and welcome center is staffed for each service

o Elders are to be guest spotters at each service – but please everyone be on the lookout and welcome new

faces – lead them to the connection center so they can be given a welcoming gift

o We separated connection center from welcome center so the welcome center would be only for guests.

The connection center is for information for current members and regular attendees

o Nametag stations were created and for the most part adopted by the congregation – names help people

feel at home

o Created follow up team lead by Kim Schroeder to deliver welcome packets to visitors

▪ Approx. 35 families have given us addresses to reach out and were visited – only 4 were not

contacted due to inaccurate information provided

▪ There are opportunity for others to join this outreach – please consider

o Future Goals

▪ Exploring new engagement strategies used by other churches to help new people come back

▪ Exploring new ways to get new and current members engaged in serving

▪ Exploring new sign for welcome center to catch eye of guests

Prayer/Counseling Justin Roberts To summarize the areas of Prayer and Counseling Ministries at River Valley Church could possibly be completed in a few words, “Small progress. Room for improvement”. ‘For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.’ [Matthew 8:20] In relation to prayer: Many pray individually and build a genuine prayer time with the Lord Jesus. However, not many seem to pray corporately. I personally wonder if we, as a generation in America, have lost a bit of heart for corporate prayer. Perhaps we have forgotten its reason or point – especially when we can pray individually anyway. But I think Jesus wants us to pray corporately, and partly that’s why He gives us the verse in Matthew 8:20. Of course, while prayer meetings are generally not exciting – I believe them to be important, and allow us to engage our very great and glorious King in unity of spirit. We have started to pray for the Church services on a Sunday morning during the 8am service; and gently begun ½ or ¼ nights of prayer every couple of months. There is also a prayer meeting @ 6:30pm every Wednesday Wednesday (1 hour). Anyone is welcome to come to these – they are all hosted at River Valley. In relation to counseling: It’s been a bit of struggle. The needs are many, the difficulties are ‘how to help’. Addictions run rampant through the Mid-West, and Watertown is not remotely immune. Heroin and Pornography affect large swathes of our population. Depression is on the rise, alongside general discontentment. Alcohol is still everywhere, but no-one notices anymore, because it is buried beneath so much else. I confess, we have not made much movement in these areas. Simply it is hard to know where or how to start without some sort of ‘way in’. All counseling we do at the moment is by referral through Pastor Dave. Caleb will begin a small-

group study on ‘Depression’ very soon. I sincerely recommend this to anyone who struggles with it, or if you know

someone who does.

In early 2018, we will also be re-vamping an area near the River Valley mail-boxes to incorporate booklets on some of these ‘counseling’ areas. Please look out for these and make use of them, and then, please let us know if there is an area we are not covering, but should. We are also gently trying to start a mentoring program. If you would like to mentor someone by gently walking them through aspects of the Bible and following Jesus, please let me know – or correspondingly, if you would like some help getting to know Jesus through His Word, please let me know. We would be very delighted to help you grow to know Jesus. Worship (Matt Colosky) 2017 was filled with change and transition especially with the contemporary music worship. We updated several pieces of equipment during the year, added a 2nd contemporary service, changed Elders, added new worship team members, and transitioned lead worship leaders. Thankfully, the traditional worship teams remained stable throughout the year and continue to do a wonderful job Josh Barnett, who was both Elder and worship team leader moved to Florida in early 2017. Several of the other worship leaders stepped up admirably to fill in any gaps throughout the year. And just recently, Brian Gerike agreed to step into the role of lead worship leader meaning he will be the point person for all the contemporary worship teams. For 2018, we expect to continue tweaking the flow and feel of 3 services. We still need to replace a couple pieces of equipment that are aging. Compiled and submitted by Ron Sokovich

Caleb Atkins Adult Ministries Dear River Valley Family,

As I reflect on all the things that God has done over the past year I am grateful. I am thankful to have a wonderful and supporting church family who my wife and I love dearly. I am thankful that God has continued to confirm my calling here to Watertown. I am thankful for all the various opportunities of ministry in and outside River Valley that I have gotten to be a part of and have a hand in. From traveling to Alliance Council in Columbus Ohio, flying to the other side of the planet again to serve in Thailand, or coaching kindergarten and first-grade flag football, God continues to use me in unique and exciting ways. I wholeheartedly look forward to what 2018 will bring. Liz and I both want to thank you all for your continued support, love, and partnership in ministry. May God receive all the glory, honor, and praise. May His Kingdom come here on earth as it is in heaven. Soli Deo Gloria, Caleb Atkins Associate Pastor of Discipleship Adult Sunday School It was great to see in Winter/Spring and the Fall of 2017 that River Valley is still passionate about Adult Sunday School. The Winter/Spring of 2017 classes were Empowered for Evangelism, Living out the Great Commission, 1st, and 2nd Peter, as well as Explore the Bible: Joshua, Judges, and Ruth. These classes helped to propel adults into deeper faith. They offered encouragement and challenge to reach out to the people around you with the gospel. They helped learners to better grasp the history of the church. They brought depth, insight, and wisdom as the Word was studied. This past fall River Valley was blessed to study the book of Revelation, as well as Master your Money: A Step by Step Plan for Experiencing Financial Contentment. Taking the total average of every class in 2017 we had an attendance of approximately 25 per class. I love the idea that 25 people are willing to spend time in relationship with one another to study what God has for them on Sunday morning beyond what is said in the sermon. I want to challenge the congregation of River Valley to raise that average number. If you have never been involved in an Adult Sunday School class please give it a try, you won’t regret it! Looking forward to 2018, expect River Valley to continue to have 2 adult classes that are rooted in God’s Word and solid teaching. Growth Groups River Valley offers unique learning environments of all sizes and types. In 2017 we offered traditional small groups of 8-12, Precepts Bible Studies for Women, Dwelling in the Word groups (formerly Digging Deeper) for all adult ages and genders, book studies, and prayer groups. The vision that the Lord laid on my heart then and continues to lay on my heart now is that everyone at River Valley would have an outlet for fellowship and growth outside of Sunday service. River Valley aims to offer many unique options to fit everyone’s schedule and personality. Groups range from 3-40 plus people. Each group is centered around the truth of God and relationships.

DMM Report continued… A 2017 highlight was the introduction of Dwelling in the Word. This unique and Spirit-led way of Bible studies challenges participants to listen to God’s Word and reflect on it individually and corporately. We began in the fall of 2017 to offer these groups beyond the midweek and have two groups that meet regularly adjacent to the 11:00 am service. God’s Word challenges us to grow together as Believers in Jesus. Looking forward to 2018, plan on seeing even more varied opportunities for growth environments. I know that we cannot manufacture spiritual growth but if we provide environments that are conducive for growth and rely on the Holy Spirit, we will see God do amazing things in the hearts and minds of our entire River Valley family. Technology In 2017 the technology at River Valley got a major upgrade. We were able to upgrade to new laptops and desktops for all staff and the sanctuary. This purchase will ensure that as our reliance on tech grows we will have the necessary equipment to accomplish our goals. This year also saw the purchase of River Valley’s own DSLR camera to enable High-definition audio and video recording. It is used weekly to publish the video for upcoming sermons. It has also been used to tape special events at River Valley. If you have not had an opportunity, please take some time to watch this year’s Cantata video. The equipment helps to further our reach in Watertown and the surrounding area. One way that we are accomplishing this is through the new River Valley Facebook page. For example, between December 11, 2017, and January 7, 2018, 4,541 people saw our page posts. During this same time, almost 500 people viewed videos that were posted by River Valley Alliance Church. As a ministry team, we hope that this will help to create an even bigger reach in the coming year. If you have Facebook please make it a practice to like and share River Valley’s posts. The more we do that as a congregation the better our online outreach becomes. Alliance Women River Valley is blessed to have an excellent women’s ministry with a wonderful leader. Here is Lauri Domer’s reflections on 2017 and the future of the Alliance Women:

The Alliance Women have been active again this year! We would like to encourage all ladies from the church to join us at any of the upcoming events, this is a wonderful group of women that want to get to know more ladies that attend River Valley. The Alliance Women have held monthly meetings and also large group events. This past year we attended the District Retreat in Green Lake, held the annual Pairs & Spares date night, and held our annual Christmas Brunch. This year we also adopted 2 missionary children to support while their family serves overseas. Abraham and Selah Thao. They are in Thailand with their parents. We pray for them and send gifts around the holidays and their birthdays. In 2018, we will host Pairs and Spares again on February 9th. The District Women’s Retreat will be a day event held at River Valley on March 17th and the annual Christmas Brunch will take place on December 1st. We will also continue to have monthly gatherings to reconnect with one another.

Alliance Men 2017 was another good year of ministry for the men of River Valley. No-Regrets was a quick sell out as always and was attended by 20 men. It was a pleasure to listen to great speakers and an amazing worship band. The fall of 2017 saw the implementation of a monthly men’s breakfast. Men’s ministry will seek to offer a monthly event to provide a place for men to connect with one another. Please consider coming out for a men’s breakfast for a time of tasty food, great fellowship, and applicable Bible study. Looking forward, I hope to use the monthly events to help grow a larger men’s ministry that has greater impact on River Valley and the Watertown community.

DMM Report continued… Senior Adult Fellowship It is a blessing every moment that I am privileged to spend time with River Valley’s senior adults. This lively group of individuals loves to study God’s word every week at our Thursday 10:00 am Dwelling in the Word group. Just in the last year, we had to move from Connections Cafe to the youth room at church due to growth and in the last months had to add a fourth rectangular table to accommodate our numbers of almost 20 seniors. The seniors also have a monthly event of a potluck that is well attended where no one ever leaves hungry. Occasionally the seniors will attend a Christian concert at the Fireside in Fort Atkinson. Keep an eye out for upcoming events.

Michael Golemi Student Ministries Curricula: Middle School Sunday School Justin Roberts continues to lead our middle schoolers as their Sunday school teacher. Justin has been assisted this year by Cory Schultz. After finishing their walk-through of the Bible earlier in the year, the middle schoolers shifted their focus to the Gospel of Mark. Their group has grown considerably in the past year as well, which makes for a fun atmosphere. High School Sunday School Our high schoolers have been discussing a broad range of topics in Sunday school class this year. We began the year with a look at how to study God’s Word. In these classes, we discussed the importance of Bible study, but our focus was on getting as much as possible from the text, and applying it to our lives. We then began a six-week study called “The Real Jesus.” Many misconceptions of Jesus prevail in our culture, and the purpose of this class was to encounter the real Jesus in Scripture, and to fall in love with Him all over again. We also took advantage of our church-wide study of the book of Ephesians to go word-by-word through the book. Middle School Youth Group This year we have covered many topics in our youth group. The highlights of this year have been our question and answer times. For four weeks I was able to answer the questions of our middle school students. I was impressed with their spiritual maturity, as well as the level of questions they were asking. If I did not force us to move on, we would have continued for several more weeks in the same way. This year we also talked about better strategies for sharing our faith with others. Our students learned that some methods don’t work and that the Gospel message is always shared best in relationships with others. High School Youth Group In high school youth group, we discussed many of the same things as the middle school youth group. However, our high school students are maturing rapidly in their faith. We are able to go far deeper on topics like sharing your faith with others. We have also seen fruit from these studies, as our high schoolers continue to bring friends to youth group. Leadership: The leadership that God has brought to this youth program is first rate! Not only are my leaders very capable, but they are also very motivated to see our students grow. There have been several opportunities for leaders to step in as the group facilitators, both in my absence and as a result of the Holy Spirits promptings. Sometimes you get leaders who are caring, and other times you get teachers who are apt teachers. I have both! Our students are in very good hands.

Page 17: River Valley Alliance Church - Amazon S3 · River Valley Alliance Church Membership December 11, 2017 53 1. Agar-Pratt, Alexandra 2. Agar-Pratt, Justin 3. *Alvarez, Ashley 4. *Alvarez,

DMM Report continued… There are also several events upcoming that our leadership has taken it upon themselves to oversee. I am excited about the prospect of a local mission trip for our youth in the summer of 2018. I am also pleased to see girl’s and boy’s events being hosted by our leaders. Mentoring: I mentioned last year that there was a growing need for mentoring our youth. I shifted my focus more towards making an impact in individual students lives this year. I am blessed to be able to be one of the adults in their lives that they trust, and I love being able to watch them grow. Vision: When you mention the word “mentoring” in an annual meeting it can raise some people’s blood pressure. My desire for the coming year is to demystify the term, and to employ several adults who are prepared and eager to pour into a young person’s life. I am not sure where to start with this, but I know that something must be done for the next generation. I am also eager to make our youth group a safe place for our students to bring friends. This year we have seen a huge shift in behavior from last year. I know our students, they know me, and there is a mutual respect. As more and more students bring their friends to youth group, I am blessed to see some of them stay! Robin Walker Children’s Ministry I have been blessed to be overseeing the children’s ministries at River Valley, which includes birth through grade 5, for the past year and a half. The children of River Valley are the next generation, and we must be intentional on how and what we teach our children. When children walk into our doors, I want them to know they are important at River Valley and we have a safe, fun place for them to learn about Christ. Nursery - birth-age 2 The nursery is headed up by Toni Olson. She has done an exemplary job making sure our nursery is always staffed. Thank you to all the volunteers that help staff our nursery for all three services each Sunday! Runners (aka toddler nursery) ages 2-4 The Runner program is offered 3rd service only. This is a full teaching time using the Discovery Land curriculum. This includes play time, puppet shows, worship, craft, snack, & bible time. This program has been led by 4 dedicated teachers (Marge Corrick-Gross, Lauri Domer, Nancy Zimmermann, and Wendy McDonnell). These children have proven that they are not too little to learn basic bible verses and have mastered the wordless book colors. The Runner program averages 6 children on Sunday mornings. Discovery Land Preschool (ages 3-5) Preschool Discovery Land meets from 9:30-10:30 on Sunday mornings during second service. Shannon Colosky is the lead teacher to this age group and does an extraordinary job! Children that attend Preschool Discovery Land spend their time with free play, worshiping through music, puppet shows, discovery time (focused play with a theme), and bible time. Our preschoolers are learning the verses that go with the Wordless Book and what the colors represent. Our preschool program averages 7 children each Sunday. Discovery Land (Kindergarten-Grade 5) We have a solid year of Discovery Land under our belts and it has been a fun and effective curriculum to use with the children. The K/1st grade classroom teachers are Amee Mertens, Stacy & Travis Koenig, and Cheryl Atkins. The 2nd /3rd grade classroom teacher is Penny Buska. The 4th /5th grade teachers are Tami Cederberg, Ron Sokovich, and Kathy Dean.

DMM Report continued… Kids begin their time with fun, interactive worship led by Josephine Wangerin and Ella Walker. We then move into Discovery Time (led by Jeremy and myself), where the kids have a fun game, activity, or competition to experience a feeling that will link to the Bible lesson for the day. Different discovery stations are used, which includes art, boxes, Legos, sand, and competitive games. From discovery time, kids then move into their classrooms for Bible time. Bible time is intentional in getting kids into their bibles, finding the book and chapter, and making links on a biblical timeline. The premise of every Discovery Land is to KNOW God’s Word and this is our one and only source of truth, THINK about God’s word, DO the principles we learn about in God’s Word, and FEEL great when we are in obedience to God’s Word. Discovery Land is followed up with a take-home paper that reviews the principles from the day, so parents can know what their kids are learning. There is a quarterly missions lesson, to help kids think more about missions. We have been averaging 23 children each Sunday between 2nd & 3rd Service. Over 55 children have attended Discovery Land since Fall of 2017! Awana (preschool-grade 5) The 2017/2018 Awana club year has been an average of 60 clubbers per night. Lauri Domer and I are serving as Commander this year. Awana works to create a strong parent-church partnership that helps kids know, love and serve Jesus Christ. Children who visit Awana for the first time are presented with the Gospel in a fun, age appropriate discussion with Amee Mertens. All visitors to Awana receive a New Testament Bible. We are blessed and thankful to have the many ministry leaders and volunteers that allow this vital ministry to run smoothly each Wednesday Night. A special thank you to Jessie Clark who has made Cubbies a smooth-sailing group; Carol Sokovich who serves as both director and secretary of Sparks; and to Laurie Haberkorn who serves as both director and secretary to T&T, and the countless volunteers that come each Wednesday night to serve in Awana.

Introduction

The international missions committee began on Thursday, July 16, 2015 under the name of “IMPACTS”. Its goal is to bring honor to the name of Jesus. IMPACTS further defined 3 parameters for spiritual support that the missions committee gives. The committee should focus on the international mission field; give preference to CMA International Workers before other mission organizations, and preferentially support those working in Thailand. These 3 points are not necessarily at the full exclusion of other missions efforts, but will be priorities. We have done that during 2017.

We further defined our goals. The first is to increase congregational knowledge of the Great Commission Fund (GCF) measured by contributions. The second is to develop a partnership with Faith Alliance Bible Church of Neosho. The third is to bring a greater awareness of missions to the entire congregation. During 2017, we have increased awareness and support of the GCF and awareness of missions. We have not been as successful in developing a partnership with Neosho but have met with Neosho Pastor Jeff Thrane who shares the desire to collaborate with River Valley.

River Valley IMPACTS Participation in 2017

IMPACTS- International Ministries A milestone was reached in December 2017. 100 separate families or individuals prayed and advocated for 14 International Workers in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Taiwan. Pray-ers commitment to pray daily for their assigned International Workers led to over 6,641 prayers for Thailand and Southeast Asia brought to the throne of the Great I AM by River Valley last year. While the number isn’t important, the commitment to supporting international evangelism and discipleship is. I believe that God hears our prayers before they are even spoken and that He delights in fervent prayer. There is nothing greater that we can do for them than pray for the Thai International Workers and their God-honoring work.

IMPACTS- Unity of Faith 2017 Short Term Missions Trip During the first 6 months of 2017, 11 team members trained for a trip to Thailand to work alongside Debbie Vik, Ed and Sue Danneker, and Brian and Abby Lindsay. The 11 team members each had individual advocates helping their team member through training, fund raising, packing and praying throughout project preparation and execution. Team members were Cory Schulz; Sandy McLatchie; John McLatchie; Caleb Atkins; Liz Atkins; Heidi Hanus; Chris Oestreicher; Rebecca Wangerin; Josephine Wangerin; Solomon Vana; and me. Our Advocates were Art and Pat Ebert; Justin Roberts; Carmen Carothers; Nate Wangerin; Jane Chen; Bill and Donna Rantanen; Collin Nehmeth; Allan Lewis; Rosy Richter; and Carol Sokovich.

International Workers and River Valley In 2017 we were blessed with a visit from Keith Neigenfind for almost a week that ended on a missions emphasis weekend. Keith’s visit was filled with events that gave many the opportunity to visit with him. From a chili cook off and bonfire to talking with Sunday School kids, Keith felt warmly welcomed at River Valley. He was housed by the Jesse and Lauri Domer family. Keith is an International Worker Church Planter from Thailand who was on home assignment when he visited.

Chris and Sarah visited River Valley shortly after Keith was here. Chris and Sarah were sent by CAMA to Laos, a creative access country. We had one event which was open to (and well attended by) the congregation- a dessert potluck at the parsonage. We had a chance to learn how International Workers function in a creative access country.

Great Commission Fund The 2017 GCF net, $47,558, was 106% of budget of $45,000. That’s $2,558 contributed over budget! Again and again, God proves His faithfulness! By the way, also 2017 GCF contributions exceeded 2016 contributions by over $10,850, which is just about a 30% increase.

Members: John and Charlene Flint, Dianne Cochrane, John and Sandy McLatchie, Teresa Vogt, Jennifer Roberts, and Jeremy Walker (Governing Board representative) Ministry Summary: Our committee meets the first Sunday of each month to prepare for communion and meet as a group to discuss open items and seek the Lord’s direction as we look to serve Him. I am thankful for the dedication and effort that the committee members to take care of the needs that arise. The benevolent fund is designated giving that is used to assist those in our congregation or community that are in need of financial assistance. Oversight and management of the benevolent fund is a major responsibility of our committee. Each need brought to our committee is discussed and brought to the Lord for wisdom and discernment. The benevolent fund began 2017 with a balance of $1961.32. Disbursements in the amount of $10,477.93 were made throughout the year. The 2017 year-end balance was $5,349.97. A monthly report with both benevolent income and disbursements is reported to the River Valley Alliance Church governing board. Throughout the year there are many church functions that need assistance in organizing. Several of these functions include pot lucks, memorial services, special events, meals for new moms or medical recovery, rides to church, and other various activities in the life of a busy church. A special thank you to the many serving on Hostess/Servant Teams that provide dishes for these events as well as providing extra hands to spread out the work over many hands. On behalf of our committee, it has been a blessing and privilege to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ at River Valley Alliance Church as well as others in our community. Respectfully, Jeremy Walker

Findings: -Ministry teams (and others) have dreams and vision for future ministries -Currently, there is minimal to little restriction of ministries due to facility limitations -The main time period that the facilities are currently stretched to the limit is Sunday mornings, particularly from 9:15-10:45 am. This is when the most ministries are actively using the facility. - Some areas of current limitation: • During service transitions—Space/flow in transition areas • Multiple entrances – Assimilation • Restricted handicap access to basement • Volunteer and staffing sustainability of 3 services • Desire of traditional and contemporary service options • Broad vision for community outreach focus…but lack of clarity • Office space for staff • Storage • Parking • Kids classes in “Basement” (lesser place?) • Child safety with multiple exits/doors • Portable dividers not ideal • Limited indoor game activity • Limited ability to expand adult or youth class offering -Sunday service attendance has been steady at 302-315 for the last six years -Full-time and part-time staff has grown significantly in the last several years -Income and expense have grown steadily at about 6% over the last 10 years Recommendations based on “charges” given to the committee: 1. Determine the challenges presented by our present facilities. • Although far from perfect, the River Valley facility currently has minimal challenges. • If proportional growth occurs in our existing ministries… significant general space issues will be seen as 140% to 150% of current levels are approached. The time that this strain will be seen on our facilities will be during Sunday morning ministries. • If we have disproportionate growth in our existing ministries, or new ministries, we could see particular issues develop associated with facility resources. • Some of the dreams/vision for expanded ministry require “more” facility while others do not. However, in current state, few of these dreams/vision appear to have much clarity from the leadership on non-facility resources needed to make them happen. 2. Determine facility needs for next 5 -10 years. • Assuming proportional growth o 5 years is not going to have any significant “need” in the facility o 10 years will have a “need” in the facility o Assuming

▪ 4% growth we will have “need” at 10 yrs

▪ 5% growth we will have “need” at 8 yrs

Build the Future Report continued…

▪ 6% growth we will have “need” at 7 yrs

▪ 7% growth we will have “need” at 6 yrs

• Since our current facility is balanced well with our current needs... as we grow these needs will be in many areas… not a particular type of space. • Some “pain points” may need to be addressed with smaller facility changes (i.e. more parking, more storage, permanent classroom walls in basement, improved outdoor space for games or camps.) 3. If expansion is necessary, put together recommendations for facility development and a timeline. • It is this committee’s determination that: o We do not have any urgent facility “Needs” at this point.

o The congregation has a general/broad vision for community outreach focus, but lack of clarity. This clarity needs to be achieved prior to any significant facility expansion.

o The committee further recommends that this committee be reconvened bi-annually to determine progress on clarity and also to re-evaluate facility needs based on growth. Treasurer’s Report continued…

2018 Budget Process: The Governing Board estimated giving to the General Fund based on the previous year’s actual giving. Ministry heads from each of River Valley’s ministries created a budget that estimated their anticipated income and expense. Most ministries are expected to have costs that exceed income. Any shortfall is covered by the General Fund. The Benevolent Fund is an exception to this general rule as it acts as a “pass-through” account where income matches expense. IMPACTS may carry-forward balances while all other ministries reset annually. The annual budget is expected to balance.

Categories of Income:

• General Income: Any undesignated donations to River Valley, tithes and offerings.

• Facility Income: Designated contributions toward “Build the Future” including: debt payment, facility and campus

maintenance and repair, facility improvement and equipment.

• Ministry Income: Designated contributions made toward activity to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ (e.g., AWANA,

GCF, BF, men’s and women’s ministries, small groups, choir, praise and worship, Discovery Land, Music Camp, etc.)

Categories of Expense:

• Compensation: Salaries and benefits of paid staff including: Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor(s), Bookkeeper,

Secretary, and contract help. Compensation expense also includes expenses from Accountable Reimbursement Plan

(ARP) expenses that include: books, tuition, mileage, etc.

• Facility: Cost for anything associated with the parsonage and church campus, facility maintenance, repair, and

improvement. It also includes payment toward a sinking fund for future capital costs.

• Ministry: Cost associated with doing the ministry of the church to educate, encourage, facilitate, and spread the

gospel of Jesus Christ. It also includes office supplies and services needed to perform ministry.
