THE WORLD’S LEADING RIVER CRUISE LINE...BY FAR®
EUROPE RUSS IA UKRAINE CHINA SOUTHEAST AS IA EGYPT
2 019 R I V E R C R U I S E S
Dear Traveler,
The “where” of your next journey presents a pleasant conundrum. Perhaps Europe is
on the horizon, with its gleaming capitals and peaceful waterways. Or maybe China,
a rugged land of deep river gorges and ancient traditions. Russia is another option,
enigmatic and captivating in its architecture and intriguing history.
As for the “how,” the choices become clearer. Viking has a long history of earning
accolades from seasoned travelers like you. Most recently, we have been named one of
the top river cruise lines in Travel + Leisure’s annual World’s Best Awards. This is just
one of the many ways in which we have been recognized for our outstanding service,
cultural immersion, shore excursions, destinations, ships and value…the things that
matter to you most.
DID YOU KNOW?…• Viking has been honored multiple times by Condé Nast Traveler on their
Gold List and Readers’ Choice Awards
• Viking was honored with five awards, including “Best Shore Excursions” and
“Best Value for Money,” in Cruise Critic’s 10th Annual Editors’ Picks Awards
• Viking reigns as the world’s most award-winning river cruise line
Our 2019 season highlights the little-known gems and legendary icons of the
world’s most storied locales. Discover scenic vineyards and medieval towns on
our 15-day Grand European Tour, or experience the cities of Shanghai and Beijing
and walk along the Great Wall during our 14-day Imperial Jewels of China.
To celebrate our 21st anniversary, the offers featured in this month’s brochure
are part of our Anniversary Sale. Call today to take advantage of the savings.
We look forward to sharing our world with you.
Sincerely,
Torstein Hagen
Chairman
P.S. Dates for our 2020 river cruises are now available. Make your reservation
by August 31, 2018 to enjoy 2020 cruises at 2019 prices.

enrichment and renewal. We offer lectures
on history and art, cooking demonstrations
of regional favorites, menus offering local
cuisine and more.

OBERAMMERGAU’S EPIC PLAY. Born from
a promise made to God, Oberammergau’s
Passion Play tells the story of the trial,
suffering and death of Christ. In 1633, as
the plague swept through Germany, the
citizens prayed for mercy. They were spared,
and today still honor their pledge to stage
this play once a decade.
MUNICH, A CITY STEEPED IN TRADITION.
Famous for its storied breweries, Oktoberfest
and BMW automobiles, Munich is a city
steeped in German culture and traditions.
The Rathaus Glockenspiel comes to life daily
midmorning in Marienplatz square, at the
center of the Old Town. From there, browse

COLOGNE’S ICONIC CATHEDRAL. With an
average of 20,000 visitors per day, Cologne’s
Dom is Germany’s most-visited landmark. This
UNESCO Site is the biggest Gothic church in
Northern Europe and its distinctive twin spires
crown the world’s largest church facade. Its
glorious cycle of 14th-century stained glass
windows is the largest intact set in Europe.
MEDIEVAL TOLLBOOTHS. Castles along the
Rhine River Valley were originally constructed
as fortified residences to protect land from
marauders — but castle owners also utilized
their advantageous positions to impose tolls
on passing merchants. This may explain
why there are so many castles on the Rhine
between Mainz and Bonn.

the Seine for lovely views of the monuments
and graceful bridges.
SENSATIONAL STRASBOURG. Multicultural
Strasbourg, capital of France’s Alsace region,
owes its blend of French and German influences
to its location along the Rhine River at the
border between the two countries. Its historic
city center, a UNESCO Site, features traditional
wooden houses and picturesque canals. See the
carefully restored Cathedral of Notre Dame, most
recognized for its graceful 465-foot-tall spires.

JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS
BEAUTIFUL BELGRADE. Discover Serbia’s
beautiful capital, Belgrade, whose history dates
back some 7,000 years. Walk through the
grounds of Kalemegdan Fortress and peek inside
the Orthodox cathedral. Take the afternoon to
enjoy the city’s gracious architecture or visit one
of its many museums. After dinner, check out
Belgrade’s famous nightlife.
HOME ON THE PUSZTA. Stretching across
Hungary is a vast prairie known as the Puszta.
Here the hardy, whip-cracking horse herders
known as csikós lived and worked. Like the
fabled cowboy of the American West, the
19th-century csikós have been romanticized in
Hungarian folk songs, dances and literature.

JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS
THE DANUBE’S IRON GATE. The Iron Gate
area of the lower Danube is one of the world’s
most scenic river gorges. Enormous white chalk
cliffs flank the river, which forms part of the
boundary between Serbia and Romania. Marvel
at the large carved face of the ancient Dacian
king Decebalus on the cliff sides.
CHARLEMAGNE’S DREAM. Some 1,200 years
ago, Emperor Charlemagne contemplated
connecting the Rhine, Main and Danube
Rivers to facilitate river travel through Europe.
This vision was finally realized when the
Main–Danube Canal was completed in 1992.
Employing ingenious river locks, vessels can
now travel 2,200 miles through 10 countries,
from the North Sea to the Black Sea.

PALACE OF THE POPES. Inspired by conflicts
in Rome, Pope Clement V moved the papal
court to Avignon in 1309. He built the Gothic-
style Palace of the Popes, which was home
to seven popes in as many decades. Today, it
still overlooks Avignon — symbolic of a brief
time when this river town was the cultural
and religious center of the known world.
ROMAN ARTIFACTS. The Roman Empire’s
reach was enormous, and evidence of the
Romans’ presence in France is everywhere.
In Vienne, you will see the beautifully
preserved Temple of Augustus & Livia, a Roman
amphitheater and other structures. And in
Arles, visit Les Arènes, an arena that seats
20,000 and is still in use today.

heart along the Rhône River, enjoy a wine tasting in Beaujolais, discover
Avignon, the “City of Popes,” and cruise the winding Seine.

JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS
THROUGH ARTISTS’ EYES. Southern France
has long served as a creative muse to artists
who are drawn to its warm light and vibrant
landscape. Mid-19th century painters such
as Renoir and Monet found inspiration here.
Others soon followed. Van Gogh produced
some of his most famous works in Arles,
including Café Terrace at Night.
ICON OF FRANCE. Visible from most points
in Paris, the Eiffel Tower was built and used
for the 1889 Paris Exposition. Ten years later it
was nearly torn down, but was saved because
of its useful radio antenna. Now it is the most
recognizable symbol of Paris. From the top,
catch remarkable views of the city.

 Admire azulejos throughout Portugal
JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS
A TILE’S TALE. From churches and palaces
to train stations and park benches, Portugal is
decorated with azulejos. Tin-glazed ceramic tiles,
azulejos are used on floors, walls and ceilings as
a decorative element as well as a functional one.
Originating from Moorish traditions, the tiles are
arranged in geometric patterns.
A WINE LIKE NO OTHER. With a microclimate
that is optimal for cultivation, the Douro River
Valley produces a distinctive regional vintage.
Picturesque quintas — vineyards clinging to the
river’s steep, sloped banks — produce a variety of
grapes that blend to form the perfect port wine.
Named after the seaport city of Porto, port is a
Portuguese fortified wine aged in barrels.

JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS
DAZU ROCK CARVINGS. A UNESCO Site,
the Dazu Rock Carvings near Chongqing are
made up of some 50,000 statues, with more
than 100,000 carved Chinese characters,
dating back as far as the 7th century AD.
They offer unprecedented insight into China’s
culture and ways of life from the Tang through
the Song Dynasties.
LIJIANG OLD TOWN. Lijiang’s 800-year-old Old
Town, a UNESCO Site, is surrounded by layered
sandstone peaks said to have mystical powers.
Strolling the town’s narrow lanes and canals,
visitors can see the traditional adobe houses
of the area’s colorful Naxi people, an ethnic
minority community that is centered in the
Lijiang area and believed to have roots in Tibet.

JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS
LUXOR. The site of the ancient city of Thebes,
Luxor is known as the “world’s greatest open
air museum,” with the ruins of the Karnak
and Luxor Temple complexes standing within
its borders. No other city reached the glory of
Thebes, which flourished for 500 years. It was
also home to the god Amun, a deity associated
with Egyptian royalty.
THE TEMPLE OF HORUS. In the form of a
falcon, a colossal statue of the god Horus
greets you at the door, while columns, walls
and doorways, covered in reliefs, read like an
encyclopedia on ancient Egyptian thought. The
most complete and best-preserved temple in
Egypt, the Temple of Horus was constructed
between 237 BC and 57 BC.
