  • In Scots law, trout-fishing rights are inseparablefrom the land upon which the loch or river lies. These rights, unlike salmon-fishing rights, cannotbe sold separately from the land.

All fishing in Scotland is, therefore, the legalproperty of riparian owners and, as such, allfishing in Scotland is private. You will becommitting either a civil or criminal offence ifyou so much as wet a line without permission todo so from the relevant fishery owner.

The publisher and the author, and all othersassociated with the production of this book, havemade every effort to ensure that the content of thisbook is accurate at the time of going to press. They have, in so far as they have been reasonablyable to do so, invited comment and correction ofthe text from bodies such as local angling clubsand fishery owners.

An entry in this book does not imply in anyway that the owner of the fishing described in thatentry will either give, or refuse to give, membersof the public a right to fish in the waters describedin that entry. The right of fishing remains solely

with the owner of the fishing concerned and it isthe responsibility of all anglers, prior to fishing, toensure that they have proper permission to do sofrom the owner of the fishery in question.

Where the term private is used in this book itmeans only that the owner does not allow orencourage public fishing specifically with regardto the entries described in the book as beingprivate.

The absence of the word private in connectionwith the other entries in the book does not implythat members of the public have any right to fishthese waters.

The information contained in this book is to beused solely within the limitations of theprovisions noted in the foregoing paragraphs. Thepublisher and the author, and all others associatedwith the production of this book, will not acceptresponsibility for any inaccuracies in the text orfor any action under any circumstanceswhatsoever that may result from the use of thebook.

  • How to Use This Book

This book is based on the Landranger OrdnanceSurvey map series (Scale 1:50,000). TheChapters reflect the 85 maps that cover Scotland. If you are unsure about the map numbers and theregions to which they relate, please consult theLocation Map on page (viii), and the Contents listof map numbers and region names on page (ix).

There are two ways of using this referencebook: If you already know the loch or river youare interested in, you can find it in the. index at theback of the book, which will give you a pagereference.

If you have a more general interest in thefishing opportunities in a particular region, thenyou must identify the relevant OS Map number(see page (ix)). The OS Maps are presented innumerical order throughout the book (OS 185).Within each OS Map chapter all the rivers andlochs of the region are listed alphabetically.

OS Map reference numbers are used to pin-point locations. If you are not familiar with theconvention of grid references, this is how theywork. Take, for example, Sandavat, Loch(Brenish) on the Isle of Lewis at grid reference13/006270. This is on OS Map 13 (the firstnumerals). After the diagonal slash, the first threenumerals (006) indicate the horizontal scale onthe map, and the following three numerals (270)indicate the vertical scale. By following the linesof these two axes to their meeting point you willbe able to locate the water in question.

If there is a name in brackets after the watername (in this case Brenish) this is to distinguishit from another loch with an identical name. Inthis instance, for example, there is another LochSandavat just two miles to the north.

  • The Law and the Open Season

Trout Fisheries the law and the open seasonIt is a civil offence to fish for brown trout inScotland without written permission from theowner of the fishing rights concerned. In areascovered by a Protection Order, fishing without thepermission of the owner is a criminal offence.

Brown trout fishing in Scotland begins on 15March and ends on 5 October. However, somefisheries delay the start of the season until 1 Apriland, in a few cases, until the 1 May. Thesedifferences are sometimes noted in the text butyou should check specific dates with the owner ofthe fishery when making a booking.

In certain areas, particularly in the Highlandsand in the Hebridean Islands, Sunday istraditionally a non-fishing day. You should respectthe local custom. You should also, as a matter ofcourtesy, ask permission from the owner of croft

lands if you have to cross them in order to accessa fishing location.

There is no close season for fishing for rainbowtrout and most put-and-take rainbow troutfisheries remain open all year round. However, some do close in October. Check specific dateswith the owner of the fishery when making abooking.

Salmon Fisheries the law and the open seasonThe following dates indicate the varying openingand closing dates for salmon fishing on the majorsystems in Scotland. Please always remember, itis a criminal offence to fish for salmon or sea troutin Scotland without the written permission of theowner to do so. Also be aware that fishing forsalmon or sea trout on a Sunday is forbidden.

  • Introduction to the 2013/2014 Edition

This is the thirtieth anniversary of Rivers & Lochsof Scotland. I began the journey in 1979 when Idecided to write my first book, published in 1983,The Trout Lochs of Scotland. Thereafter, it justgrew and grew into the present volume which nowdescribes almost all of the most significant lochsand rivers in Scotland. In hindsight I didnt reallyappreciate the enormity of the task that I hadundertaken; the internet was still very much in itsinfancy then and Google but a twinkle in MessrsPage and Brins eyes; everything relating to thebook was done the old way, by post, telephoneand by personal contacts with friends and fishingacquaintances.

Without their help and endless courtesy I couldnever have succeeded in completing the work, norwould I have been able to keep it up to date.Inevitably, however, in a book of this nature, thereare going to be errors and they are all mine. I amnot perfect, as so-called nearest and dearestfrequently tell me, so please, if you can, let meknow if you find errors so that I can make theappropriate alterations in future volumes.

I have spent most of my life fishing throughoutScotland, and have been fortunate in the friendsthat I have made; fishing is like that, more art than

sport and it has brought me a lifetime of pleasure. My fishing partner, my wife Ann, has been aconstant support and good companion. We havesuccessfully weathered most of the storms thathave come our way; including being blessed withfour children and now ten grandchildren. Weintroduced them all, and nephews and niecesvarious, to the joys of angling. In doing so, weintroduced them also to the large religion of thehills. There are few better things that one can giftlittle ones.

I remember in 1983 my big son, Blair, thentwenty-three years young, coming through to mywork room holding a copy of the first edition ofThe Trout Lochs of Scotland. Father, he said, smiling, This is probably one of the greatestworks of angling fiction ever written, well done!Happily, age must have mellowed him, because hehas agreed to take over the book and keep it up todate when I no longer can. Happily, also, thisevent is not imminent I have too much to do andtoo many more of our wonderful lochs and riversto fish.

north of Stromness and is easily accessible from

public roads; including the B9055 on the west shoreand from minor roads branching off the A986 on theeast shore.

Flies & Tactics Boat fishing is preferred, but bank fishingcan be just as productive. Generally, the margins of theloch and in the vicinity of the skerries is where toconcentrate your efforts. At the north end, drifttowards Scarrataing (6/276178), then south toWhilliastane (6/280170). From the Merkister Hotel, drift south by Burrian Broch (6/296186) down to KirkQuoy (6/294178). below the Halladale road bridge, to the sea at MelvichBay. Strictly fly only. The Lower River is divided intofour three-rod beats, containing excellent holdingpools which include: Barriers, Sandy Brae, Mugs, RunOut, Victoria, Munros, Lady Bighouse, MacBeaths,Harpers and Bridge Pool. The Upper River is narrow, one section running through a dramatic gorge, but alsohas a number of excellent holding pools which can bevery productive, given water levels: Grades, Devils,Ravens Rock, MacNicholls, Forsinain Bridge, Coffin,Cross Burn, and Majors Pool. Season: 12 Jan30 Sept.

    Fish Salmon average 10lb 8oz, grilse 6lb 8oz. Mostseasons produce 500 fish.

Flies & Tactics A strong, single-handed rod is adequate. The character of the river varies significantlythroughout its course, testing all your casting skills, although generally the river is free from obstructions. The most successful fly over the years has been theGarry Dog, but other useful patterns include: GreenHighlander, Hairy Mary, Stoats Tail, GeneralPractitioner.

Commentary Haluim is one of Scotlands most scenictrout lochs, dominated to the east by the gracefulpeaks of Ben Loyal (765m), Queen of Scottishmountains. This is the premier trout fishery on theLoyal Estate and it lies at the centre of a group of hilllochs, named and unnamed, that would take severalweeks to properly explore. The most significant are:Loch nan Eulachan (10/549444), Lochan Sgeireach(10/556443), An Coal-loch (10/558447), Loch anAon-Bhric (10/550459) and Loch aMhadaidh-ruaidh(10/555461).

Fish Haluim contains large stocks of trout which average 8oz in weight and fight strongly. There arebigger fish, but anything over 1lb is rare. Thesurrounding lochs hold trout of similar size, as well as,however, the possibility of a few glass-casespecimens. This is a very special place and one mypersonal favourites.

Flies & Tactics A boat is available on Haluim and this makesit easier to explore all the many nooks and corners of thismagnificent, butterfly-shaped loch. Haluim is 34 of a mileeast/west by up to 12 mile north/south. However, bankfishing is just as productive and wading is generallycomfortable and safe. The surrounding lochs and lochansare all fished from the bank.
