End of BrezhnevEnd of BrezhnevBrezhnev’s health was poor

during 1970’s, suffering from two stroked in 1975 and 1977.

Brezhnev was increasingly absent from the centre of events in Moscow.

Early November 1982, Brezhnev was made to stand for hours in sub zero conditions in the Red Square for the annual commemoration of the Revolution. He had a final stroke and died in his sleep on the 10th.

believed in the need for reform. However, he was restrained by the parameters of the Soviet system.

In this sense, he was in a similar position to Khrushchev – though Andropov was without the same unpredictability .

Andropov tagline was “efficiency and discipline”.

South Korean airliner KAL South Korean airliner KAL 007007

Soviet war planes shot down Korean Airlines passenger plane killing 269 people.

Andropov was on holiday at the time. The decision to shoot down KAL 007 was taken at local military level in accordance with prescribed rules of engagement.

There was a huge international outcry, especially after Kremlin’s denial of the incident. They then denied shooting down the planed. Eventually they finally admitted to it.
