Update on Town Center Planningby the RVCA Town Center Planning CommitteeIt’s been several months since residents were updated on the Town Center Plan. As we continue the process, resident input is critical and matching what’s wanted with a financial plan that is fiscally sound is the mandate.Master Plan Discussions Many great ideas have come out of the Master Plan discussions. These will make Rio Verde even a greater place to live and will attract the next generation. With resident feedback, concepts have been modified. And as was stated originally, this is a long term plan to be instituted as funds are available.Financial OptionsFinancial options are currently being examined and these will be presented to the community in the Fall. The first priority which is being embarked on is the issue of safety, particularly as it pertains to Forest Road, Four Peaks Boulevard and Danny Lane. The Town Center Planning Committee and the Streets Committee are coordinating efforts in their planning for safer roads, pedestrian cross walks and walkways.Review of Forest Road TrafficWork has begun with MCDOT (Maricopa Department of Transportation) to review the problems of increased traffic and speed issues on Forest Road.Sidewalks and Parking PlansSecondly, the engineering firm of EPS Group has been retained to create an engineering plan for a sidewalk along the east side of Danny Lane from the Community Center to the Church, a couple of openings in the existing medians of Four Peaks Boulevard for cross access, possible bump outs and parallel parking plus potentially some sidewalks in the existing medians. Depending on the engineering firm’s report and costs associated with the recommendations, this work will likely be done in phases.First Priority SafetySafety, as it relates to the roads, needs to be the priority before Fitness Center expansion can be tackled even though the Fitness Center has been listed as a priority among residents in the focus groups, surveys and feedback on the Master Plan.Look for more updates in future issues of the Roadrunner.

RV Dentist Dr. Christine Kopsky Closes OfficeAfter 30 plus years in the Rio Verde community, the dental office of Rio Verde Dentistry/AZ Smiles Dental has closed its doors.  The Rio Verde practice has been merged into AZ Smiles primary location at DC Ranch, near Safeway.    Dr. Kopsky and her staff thank Verde residents for their support over the years and invite current and new patients to visit their DC Ranch location.AZ Smiles is currently offering a New Patient Special for $69 which includes a comprehensive exam, full set of X-rays and general cleaning. Rio Verde WoodpeckerMike Krozer took this photo of a Gila woodpecker in his backyard adjacent to QR #8. Do you often wake up to a woodpecker drumming on your metal chimney? According to Arizona Game & Fish, woodpeckers use loud drumming to establish territory and attract a mate.

Palm Trees on Fire... At 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, two palm trees in the Four Peaks median just across from the Community Center parking lot burst into flames. The fire started on the bottom of the trees and quickly spread to the top. According to the Rio Verde Fire Department, “Although the cause of the fire is deemed to be undetermined, it is possible that smoking materials may have played a role. This past week on Rio Verde Drive, a spark from a welder caused a one acre brush fire.”Bottom Line...Please be extremely careful in this hot dry weather!

Master Trainer Web Parton was here from Tucson to train Rio Verde dogs to avoid the poisonous Sonoran Desert Toad which appears at the start of the Monsoon season. The class was arranged by Larry Herman. Note: If your pet does encounter a toad, flush the mouth out carefully with a large amount of water and seek medical attention immediately! Even low doses of the toad’s poison may be fatal without proper treatment.
