MOUNT RINJANI HIKING 21-25 AUGUST 2012 Gunung Rinjani, a stratovolcano, is the highest mountain on the island of Lombok and one of the highest in Indonesia. It is situated in the north of Lombok. What stands out most about this mountain is the beauty of the scenery in the crater and the spectacular views you get from the top. The huge caldera contains a large crescent-shaped lake (about 2,000 m), called Segara Anak , and a post-caldera cone (approximately 2,800 m), called Gunung Baru Jari. The crescentic form of the lake results from growth of the cone. Lava flows have entered the lake. The central cone is still active; the last eruption took place in 2009. From the top you can see the trio of volcanoes in the east of Bali ( Agung, Abang and Batur), the "Gilis", and the island of Sumbawa. Rinjani is one of the touristic highlights of Indonesia. Many people climb it, foreigners and Indonesians alike. Sometimes the small summit area is crowded. During full moon many people from Lombok (of both Sasak and Balinese origin) climb the mountain for religious reasons. For them, Rinjani is a holy mountain. They make a pilgrimage to the top, the lake, and to hot springs, which are situated not far from the lake. They believe that the gods reside at the top and that the water from the hot springs has healing properties. They go on this pilgrimage during full moon because at this time the gods appear and so it is the best time for offering s, and the healing power of the water is stronges t. At 3,726 m, Rinjani is the second highest mountain in Indonesia outside of Papua. It is very climbable by visitors with a high level of physical fitness. Critical is to understand and respect this great mountain: sadly, visitors have died here through failing to follow sensible procedures and make all necessary preparations. Few actually make the very strenuous effort require d to reach the actual summit but instead stop at the crater rim (approx 2,700 m) where the views of the crater lake are mind blowing. To make the extra 1,000 m ascent to the very top requires a considerably higher level of fitness, not to mention strength of spirit and sense of adventure. Typically, a trek to the crater rim involves two days and one night on the mountain. The longer ascent to the summit can be done with just one night's camping but is often part of a longer trek of 3-4 days and two or three nights. Proper sturdy climbing/hiking boots are an absolute necessity as is a substantial waterproof, windproof  jack et, and a head lamp. If you are going to the top, use of poles (walking stick s) for get ting throug h the scree (loose rock) at the top are also highly recommended. By 2,000 m, you will feel like you are not in the tropics any more as rising wet, hot air loses its temperature and may fall as rain. If inappropriate clothing becomes wet difficulties will set in as air temperatures towards the summit are as low as 4C, often with a significant extra wind chill factor. You must prepare accordingly.

MOUNT RINJANI HIKING 21-25 AUGUST 2012

Gunung Rinjani, a stratovolcano, is the highest mountain on the island of Lombok and one of the highest in

Indonesia. It is situated in the north of Lombok. What stands out most about this mountain is the beauty of

the scenery in the crater and the spectacular views you get from the top. The huge caldera contains a largecrescent-shaped lake (about 2,000 m), called Segara Anak , and a post-caldera cone (approximately 2,800

can see the trio of volcanoes in the east of Bali (Agung, Abang and Batur), the "Gilis", and the island of

Sumbawa.

Rinjani is one of the touristic highlights of Indonesia. Many people climb it, foreigners and Indonesians alike.

Sometimes the small summit area is crowded. During full moon many people from Lombok (of both Sasak

and Balinese origin) climb the mountain for religious reasons. For them, Rinjani is a holy mountain. They

believe that the gods reside at the top and that the water from the hot springs has healing properties. Theygo on this pilgrimage during full moon because at this time the gods appear and so it is the best time for

offerings, and the healing power of the water is strongest.

At 3,726 m, Rinjani is the second highest mountain in Indonesia outside of Papua. It is very climbable by

visitors with a high level of physical fitness. Critical is to understand and respect this great mountain: sadly,
