Jazz at Lincoln Center

Meet the ArtistsThe Late Night Session Big BandThe Late Night Session Big Band, directedby Evan Sherman, evolved organically overthe course of many Late Night Sessiongigs at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Duringthese performances, between the hours ofmidnight and 3 a.m., Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola exploded into a spontaneous danceparty, with dancers of all ages, back-grounds, and abilities responding to anessential, but sometimes overlooked, ingredient of jazz music—dance. The BigBand is driven by the philosophy that, alongside many decades of innovationsand changes in jazz, the music shouldalways maintain the feeling and energy thatpulls an audience out of their seats andonto the dance floor.

Evan Sherman has played drums with manyof the great big bands of today, including theDizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, JimmyHeath Big Band, and Ron Carter’s Great BigBand. After the monthly Late Night DanceSession was conceived by Late NightSession curator Michael Mwenso, Shermancalled upon many of his peers in their 20s,as well as more established musicians, toassemble his own band that is equal partsenergy and experience. The Big Band’srepertoire includes classic arrangements ofCount Basie, Duke Ellington, FletcherHenderson, Jimmie Lunceford, IllinoisJacquet, Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, plusoriginal arrangements by Sherman. Theband has a core 16-piece ensemble, withMwenso as the featured vocalist. The BigBand has welcomed guests such as JohnnyO’Neal, Jon Batiste, Cyrus Chestnut, tapdancer Michela Marino Lerman, and asteady stream of surprise guests that comeout to both watch and perform.

Lavay Smith and Her Red HotSkillet LickersSultry chanteuse Lavay Smith evokes asensuous era of glamorous jazz divas andsexy pinups with a modern, feminist twist.Smith, the vocalist and bandleader of theRed Hot Skillet Lickers, grew up inSouthern California and the Philippines.Whether singing her own compositions ordrawing on a large repertoire of classics,Smith and her all-star band bake up aninstant recipe for good times. She hasbecome known as a modern day jazz andblues diva with a vocal style influenced byBillie Holiday, Dinah Washington, BessieSmith, and Little Esther Phillips. Her entic-ing stage style is a cross between MarilynMonroe and Bettie Page.

Smith approaches her material from thestandpoint of an independent woman, com-bining world-class singing and musicianshipwith contemporary and provocative lyrics. Her musical stance is echoed in her role asowner of her own Fat Note Records.

Smith’s debut smash hit album, One HourMama, received widespread critical acclaimand has sold over 40,000 copies in theUnited States. Her second release,Everybody’s Talkin’ ‘Bout Miss Thingrepeated this success, staying on theBillboard Jazz charts for 20 consecutiveweeks, and rising to No. 10. The albumreceived widespread critical acclaim, includ-ing a prestigious 4 1/2-star review inDownBeat magazine.

The musicians in this ensemble have per-formed and recorded with Duke Ellington,Ella Fitzgerald, Nat “King” Cole, FrankSinatra, Tito Puente, Lionel Hampton, TajMahal, and Little Esther Phillips, to name afew. The band first performed in 1989, and
