NEXT MONTH: Bring your tired, old, unused, but in excellent shape, effects you no longer want......someone wants to buy it! FLEA MARKET BONANZA!

With 30 members attending we started off the New Year with a hands on Work Shop presented by four talented members of the Ring:

JONTI: A discussion with good tips on handling & presentation of magic. Key points: Use hand products, like baby oils & talcs to keep the proper mixture of dryness & suppleness for the fingers to manipulate cards. Keep props clean & bright for display & presentation. He then performed and taught a nice QUICKIE “Count the cards to spell the Spectator’s name for reveal” effect: ....control the freely chosen card to the top of the deck....count onto table the number of cards that are equal to the number of letters in the Spectator’s name (i.e., “John” would be five cards counted) . Place cards on top of the deck. Embellish with false cuts & false shuffles (i.e., keep the top cards in place). ........Hand deck to Spectator and have him repeat what you did....count onto the table the num-ber of cards that equal the letters in his name. When he has placed the fifth card down, ask him what was his chosen card........when he turns the card over it is his card. Your instructions have simply caused him to reverse the order; i.e., his chosen card which was on the top of the deck.... you counted onto the table as the last card placed......when you picked up the pile to replace on the deck it is now fifth from the top. The false cuts/shuffles left the order intact.....when Spectator counted the cards off, the selected card is now the last card that was counted off.

KEN LASHER: Nice clinic on basic coin moves....proper positioning for various finger palms, the Click Pass, French Drop & coin switches highlighted. Cool handing of the classic coin through cigarette effect.

WES: Clinic on Rings off String/Rope...what? You were expecting cards? Nice demonstration on how to do various false knots which look cool; Hunter Bow knots explained. Practical, visible magic to entertain.

DAVE PITCHFORD: Doves. What? You were expecting cards? After a great discussion/demonstration of false cuts & shuffles, Dave performed & explained how to do a non sleight of hand “Finding the Selected Card” routine......then amazed all with a second built in climax to the routine....cutting to the four aces......then blew us away with another, the third climax to the rou-tine........a terrific color separation of all the cards that were under the aces! BRAVO!

Richiardi, Jr.

He was born into a family of magicians: his grandfather was Izquierdo, his father Ricardo called himself "The Great Richiardi." His father's show was noted for its various effects of torture and mutilation — like the head chopper and the buzz saw.

Unfortunately, The Great Richiardi died in an auto accident at the age of forty-two. His son Aldo, just fourteen years old when it happened, and the young man — though at first reluctant to follow the family tradition — eventually would become the most famous of the Richiadis.

Born November 24, 1923, in Peru, Aldo lzquierdo Colosi attended military school and also studied singing and dancing. His original goal was to become a doctor, but after his father's death, he de-cided to continue the family tradition. He billed himself as "Richiardi, Jr. — the youngest illusionist in the world."

Writer and magician James Randi called Richiardi "one of the most colorful, energetic and dynam-ic artists ever seen in the profession." At the age of just 26, Richiardi opened a show in New York in 1949 and was soon grossing $40,000 per week —and being called one of the top three money-makers on Broadway that season.

Randi believes that Richiardi's fast-paced, dynamic presentation style very likely was a strong in-spiration to both Doug Henning and the young David Copperfield in their approach to stage magic. Among the many illusions he performed were Robert-Houdin's "Ethereal Suspension," with the as-sistant balanced on one broomstick; his father's notorious buzz-saw illusion; and Buatier de Kolta's "Vanishing a Girl from a Chair."

With pig's blood hidden in pouches on the Saw table, his performance of the illusion splattered the blood during the sawing right onto the first several rows of patrons. The crowds went wild and it created a sensation whenever performed.

Richiardi toured Europe and the Orient. He proved to be enormously popular wherever he went. Like many magicians of the 50s and 60s, he quickly made the transition to television and was a frequent performer on Ed Sullivan's Sunday evening variety show, "Toast of the Town" (where I first saw him perform). There was also a show called "Witness the Impossible" and a cable TV special called "Richiardi's Chamber of Horrors" hosted by actor Vincent Price.

Richiardi suffered from diabetes and was notorious for rapid mood swings from exuberance to de-pression. Many feel this was the primary reason for the frenetic pace he exhibited on stage. Tragically while performing in the Bahamas, his foot was injured and the subsequent infection re-quired amputation of both legs. He died shortly after ---on September 5,1985 at the age of 61.

His son, Ricardo, has continued in his father's footsteps, representing the fourth generation of this amazing magical family.

Trick ? of the Month Various Stacked Decks

8 King Stacked Deck

Setup: Deck set up in Eight King Stack. Top down as follows.

Suits in CHASED order Clubs, Hearts, Spades Diamonds

Mnemonic:

Eight Kings threaten to Save ninety five Queens from one sick Jack

8 K 3 10 2 7 9 5 Q 4 Ace 6 J

This repeats 4 times for a full deck.

Si Stebins Stack

The Si Stebbins System assigns a numerical value to each card: aces are one, all spot cards are the same as their face value, jacks are 11, queens are 12, and kings are 13. In this scheme, suits rotate in the popular Clubs, Hearts, Spades, Diamonds order – easily remembered using the mnemonic word, CHaSeD. Chances are, even if you are new to the Si Stebbins System, you’re probably already familiar with both of these concepts from other card tricks.

The deck is arranged so that every card is three points higher than the one that pre-cedes it. The complete 13-card sequence is as follows: 1 – 4 – 7 – 10 – 13 – 3 – 6 – 9 – 12 – 2 – 5 – 8 – 11. At the end of this series, the rotation starts over at one. Unlike a “stacked deck,” cutting a deck set-up in Si Stebbins order does not disturb the arrange-ment.

What you can do with the Si Stebbins System

With the Si Stebbins System, you can easily identify one or more freely selected cards,

locate a “thought of” card in the pack, and discover the identity of the card at ANY po-

sition in the deck. What’s more, you can do all this with a minimum of handling, no

difficult moves, and the deck can be completely examined at the end.
