CLIMB KANGYATSE SHOULDER(6100m) MARKHA VALLEY via CHILLING & STOKTHE MARKHA VALLEY

Highlights: Lamayuru monastery and unique landscape

 Cultural Interaction

 Rafting on the Indus

 Panoramic views

Climbing Kangyatse shoulder With a very interesting beginning at the famous Lamayuru monastery, we walk up the less travelled Ripchar valley with remarkable landscape and a number of parallel mountain ranges. The Great Himalayan Range, the Zanskar range and the Ladakh range divide this territory, offering a wealth of 6000 metre peaks, and a maze of excellent trekking routes, which usually involve high pass crossings. Scattered high villages, each with its irrigated fi elds of barley and potatoes, add colour to this otherwise quite barren environment. On this trip we will trek through the lesser travelled Ripchar Valley , cross the Zanskar river by cable pulley to trek into the popular Markha valley before moving to higher grounds and the base of Kangyatse to climb the left shoulder of Kangyatse – a peak requiring just the basic mountaineering skills – an excellent ending to this wonderful trek.

Climb of Stok Kangri The Markha valley is by far one of the most beautiful valleys in Ladakh and a popular destination due to the proximity of its whole circuit to Leh. A varied trek across high passes with tremendous views of the snow capped mountains, gorges, arid landscape dotted with villages with their colorful fi elds of mustard and barley and meetings with locals make this trip a trekker’s delight. However, on this particular itinerary, we do not take the standard route but begin from the little village of Chilling. We cross the Zanskar River by cable to meet with our horses on the other side which joins the popular route at Skiu. At the end after crossing the Kongmarula, we make a diversion into a lesser known but again another beautiful valley with high pastures and great views to Stok Base Camp and the ultimate highlight of our trip – the summit of Stok Kangri (6137m).

Drive with Views of the Drang Durung Glacier, Nun Kun peaks and the Suru Valley The ancient Buddhist kingdom of Zanskar, hidden deep in the western reaches of the Great Himalayan Range, has little contact with the outside world. Even the famous Himalayan caravan routes didn’t pass this way since snow keeps Zanskar’s high passes inaccessible most of the year. During the winter months, the locals commute by walking across the frozen Zanskar River. This trek takes you across several high passes with the rocky folds of the Zanskari landscape ever changing colours by the light. You get to visit medieval villages; many nestled into cliff sides, irrigated fi elds of buckwheat and green pea patches and some well known monasteries – Lingshed, Karsha, Sani. Nanda Devi-‘Goddess of Joy’- at 7,816m is one of the highest peaks in the Indian Himalaya. For Indians of Hindu faith it is among the most sacred mountain after mount Kailash. Surrounding the peak is an oceanic expanse of high 6,000 and 7,000 meter peaks. Nanda Devi’s inner sanctuary is currently off limits to climbers and trekkers. It was the goal of many early 20th century expeditions- all of which failed to reach the sanctuary until Eric Shipton and Bill Tilman reached it via the Rishi gorge in 1932. Tilman eventually climbed the peak for the fi rst time with Charles Houston in 1936.
