Though valiant and brave, the great Rikki-tikki-tavi suffered terribly at the jaws of Nag within the Big Man's bathroom (273). With ivory fangs glistening, Rikki clamped his jaws at the base of Nag's neck (274). Sorrowfully, as Nag reared his slippery hood, he slammed Rikki against the tomato-colored jar, causing the doomed mongoose to lose consciousness. Coffee fur matted and ripped, Rikki lay defenseless while Nag bit, injecting singing venom into the lifeless hero.

Unfortunately, as Rikki overheard, Nag's family expanded; the plump, pearly eggs eventually hatched, and the army of cobras have ruled the garden since (232).
