Na’im was born in Syria, a country in the Middle East. He has lived in the capital city of Damascus all his life. However, in March of 2011, fighting began in his country that changed his life and his family’s lives. Nai’m has a good job as a writer for a business that has offices in Syria and the nearby country of Jordan. When the fighting started, Na’im was travelling between Syria and Jordan doing work for the company, but
he tried to spend most of his time in Syria with his wife and young son. After the fighting started, however, he worried about his family often whenever he had to travel. The fighting became worse, and soon there were times when the phones or internet weren’t working in Syria. If Na’im were travelling at these times, he couldn’t reach either family or his other relatives. He worried about them all the time. After a while the fighting moved to Damascus, and his son would get very scared from the loud noises of the fighting. The business where Na’im worked had to move most of their work to Jordan because many things in Damascus were not working well. Na’im had to stay in Jordan much more, away from his family. So Na’im started to work both in the evenings and at the weekends to earn extra money and move his family to Jordan. After a few months he had saved enough money and made plans for his family to join him. Travel was very difficult because of the fighting, so Na’im went to Syria and brought his wife and son back with him. He is so happy that they can be together now. The situation is still very difficult, for Na’im; his wife and son are separated from all their relatives and they miss their country very much. Whenever Na’im and his family see or smell the beautiful jasmine flower, the flower of Damascus, they want to cry because it reminds them of their country. Areas in Syria have been destroyed from the fighting, so, although they plan to return to Syria as soon as possible, they are not sure what it will be like when they do. But Na’im is thankful every day that he can be with his wife and son, that he has a good job and that they have a place to live for now. He hopes he can return to his country soon.
In Right Up 4 Student Book you will read about many people who have shown strong character no matter what they encounter in life. Almost all the people you read about in the Student Book, however, are either famous people, or their stories have become very famous on the internet. In the workbook you will also be able to read about people of interesting character, but these people will be everyday people whom you might meet in your neighbourhood, at the supermarket, at the factory or in your class at school. Enjoy as you get to meet some ordinary people like you and me with amazing character.

S1: It’s amazing how important our country is to us. Have
you ever thought about how many things we do a certain
way because of the country we’re in?
S1: Sure. If you think about it, both the food we eat and the
houses we live in are determined by the country we live in.
S1: Even the clothes we wear are affected. For example, we live
in a cold area, so we wear lots of wool, layers and thick
clothes.
S1: It is amazing. Just by living in a different country, your life
can become very different!
Liste
S2: No, I guess I haven’t. Can you give me some examples?
S2: Yeah, that’s true. If we lived in the desert, our houses would
use neither wood nor bamboo like they do here.
S2: Yes, and something you forgot to mention is the language.
People have to either know their country’s language or speak
the local dialect.
