PINK Tigers raise vital fundsWAFL and Amateur football ranks turned the game pink last Saturday, all in the name of raising money for breast cancer research and the continued provision of breast cancer nurses to those in need of support.

At the Showground, the Claremont Tigers donned specially-designed jumpers and aimed to raise $10,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s ‘Real Men Wear Pink’ campaign. The money raised is for on-going breast cancer research. The final tally is still being confirmed and it will include money raised from auctioning the special jumpers for between $80 and $250. As an added bonus the game between the Tigers and Lions attracted the season’s highest WAFL television audience so far in 2016 (46,000 viewers) and the game attendance was close to 2000. On the same afternoon, Curtin Uni Wesley Football Club hosted its sixth annual Pink Tiger Day and raised an incredible $41,000 for the McGrath Foundation, which provides breast care nurses around the country, particularly in regional areas where patients have less access to support resources than those people loving in the city.

SWAN Districts premiership star Matt Riggio is known for keeping opposition on their toes, but recently it’s been the football historians who have been scrambling to keep up with the prolific midfielder. Riggio slipped under the radar, which meant his welcome into the WAFL 200 Club has been delayed – albeit by just one week. The 28-year-old played his 200th senior game in last week’s loss to East Perth. Those 200 games were made up of 127 for Swan Districts, one for Peel, one for WA as well as 10 for North Melbourne, 33 for North Ballarat and 28 for Werribee. The Black Ducks are back home this weekend and will be searching for their second win of the season in what is expected to be Riggio’s 201st senior game. They take on a rampaging South Fremantle side that is sitting on top of the ladder, percentage ahead of reigning premiers Subiaco, with seven wins and one loss. The game should also feature another recent 200-gamer in Ashton Hams. The 29-year-old Bulldog recorded his 200th senior game in his side’s only loss for the season so far, which was in Round 7 against the Lions. Hams’ 200 games were made up of 39 for West Coast, 159 for the Bulldogs and two for Western Australia. This weekend should mark his 202nd senior appearance.

Riggio was drafted from Peel by North Melbourne in the 2005 National Draft and returned to WA in 2010 where he tasted immediate success, playing in a premiership with Swan Districts. The next year he had a new coach, Greg Harding, who is still at the helm in 2016. “When we first met we butted heads a fair bit,” an honest Harding said about last year’s Swan Medallist. “Things worked out and he had an outstanding year in 2012 and we thought we had a real shot at the premiership. But he did his calf late in the season and that was a significant factor in us not getting through to the grand final from the second semi-final. “His last five years have been fantastic and his last four weeks he’s had over 130 touches and a lot of that has been against the tide.” Harding said Riggio’s attack on the footy has been outstanding and that since the club went through some financial turmoil he has seen a lot of his premiership teammates move onto greener pastures. He has also seen his best mate Ryan Davis head to the Gold Coast for another opportunity at AFL level. “Along with a lot of our senior players like Tony Notte, Justin Simpson and Tallan Ames to name a few, he could have been forgiven for not playing with the same amount of passion week-in and week-out, but he has been one of our finest leaders and

best performers and he is a great role model for our young midfielders coming through because he shoulders so much of the work load defensively and offensively,” Harding said. “He is one of our most loved players out on the ground and around the club because he has stuck really solid when the times have been at their toughest and he continues to perform under pressure. “Our planning has had to change dramatically since November when, for various reasons including injury and other opportunities, we lost a host of players like Tim Geappen, Davis and recruit Ryan Crowley. “All of a sudden our plan for a really strong season has changed and so too has our focus. When it changes from being right up the top and pressing while still maintaining a development focus to where we are now and needing to expose as many young players as possible for as long as possible, it’s tough. But we have to do that so that when the time comes and we get our injuries back that we are in even better shape.”

Harding said if the club is going to succeed in its plan to develop the younger players faster than they had expected and hoped too, it needs to have buy-in from the senior players like Riggio because they have a massive role to play in regard to brining the young players on. “I’ve been so impressed with the way Matt conducts himself with the young players and even on the weekend against East Perth where it looks statistically poor, he was outstanding in his ability to communicate with guys like Alby Dean and Brayden Hackett who are in the early stages in their careers,” he said. “Matt’s ability to instruct and lead those players was significant on the day and in terms of development he is helping to fast track those players on the field. It’s a great trait to have because when he finishes up his career he will be able to walk away as a premiership player, a Swan Medallist and knowing that he has made the club significantly better because he has been loyal, has led by example and has shown genuine leadership.” Other WAFL-based players who can still reach the 200-game milestone this year are West Perth’s Matt Guadagnin and Andrew Strijk, Subiaco’s Greg Broughton and East Perth’s Jarrad Oakley-Nichols.

To top off the day, Curtin Uni Wesley, who are coached by former WAFL champion Kris Miller and feature the likes of other former WAFL players Toby Bairstow and Connor Davidson in their line-up, won their A Grade clash with Fremantle CBC. The Tigers also donned specially-designed jumpers, held a very successful auction led by Tiny Holly and had the very entertaining Darren Reid and the Soul City Groove entertaining the ‘pink’ crowd until the early evening.

I concluded last week’s column with a plea for information about a set of plastic cups that I thought were probably issued in the 1970s. The little Kristaware cups, which stand about 9cm tall and have a diameter at the top of about 6cm, have eluded me for years. Occasionally, I have happened across one, but only once have I had a chance to buy a single cup. A couple of years ago, I discovered that the same cups had been sold in SA with the SANFL club logos on them. I’ve seen the SA versions sell quite cheaply, but I doubt the WA versions would be available at bargain basement prices if they hit the market. Anyway, it was from SA collector Mike that I received some information about these cups during the week, which is obviously based on the assumption the SA and WA sets were issued at the same time. I would be very surprised if they weren’t. Mike was able to provide an advertisement that appeared in the press in SA, which reveals the cups were sold separately for just 20c apiece. Unfortunately, the ad doesn’t tell us where they were sold, other than to say they were available at “your favourite store”. And Mike didn’t note the date of the newspaper when he discovered. So, I wonder if anyone else is able to help with further information about these great little collectables? Along with the old club annual reports that I wrote about in last week’s column, one of the other collectables that I reckon is somewhat ignored by most collectors is the humble fixture card. In the 1970s and 80s, especially, they were a really popular way of advertising specific products, particularly for businesses that wanted their advertisement kept around for a few months (or the rest of the footy season, anyway). In Victoria, some of the oldest fixtures are quite sought after. Anything pre-war carries good value and there were plenty

of companies – most of them tobacco manufacturers – who made them.

I’ve seen very few fixture cards for the WAFL that date to before World War II, just two, in fact. The earliest was produced by tobacco manufacturers Michelides Ltd in 1937. As revealed only a few weeks ago in this column, Michelides produced a set of eight postcards featuring WAFL team photographs in that same season. The Michelides fixtures were recently discovered in a deceased estate collection The other pre-war fixture card, which I found among a small pile of old Budgets last year, was issued in 1940 by Canada Motors, of Murray St, which used the fixture card to advertise its status as the local agent for Pontiac. The next earliest in my own collection dates to 1957 and was issued by the East Perth Football Club in conjunction with Coca-Cola. Businesses that issued fixture cards during the 1960s covered plenty of different industries: there were clothing companies like Nevarda and Pellews; pubs like the Broken Hill Hotel, the Hurlingham Hotel, the United Service Hotel and the Oxford Hotel; then there were small businesses, like Joondanna pharmacist Jim McMorrow and Jarrahdale newsagents B & L Gianatti, along with bigger groups like the WA Government Railways, BP and 6PR. I have heaps of fixtures from the 1970s. Pubs and brewers had certainly realised the potential for advertising on fixture cards by this stage and some of those I have from this era advertise the Plympton Hotel, Swan Lager, Bond 7 Australian Whisky, and Vat 69 Scotch Whiskey. The first set of fixtures in my collection featuring politicians was issued in 1974 by Labor MLA Ron Davies, who was later Leader of the Opposition, and South East Metropolitan MLC Grace Vaughan. By the 1980s, most of the fixture cards were produced by Marlboro, Town & Country, Emu Export and Peter Jackson 30’s.

The good news for collectors is that they generally go for very little. Just a dollar or two should see you right for any fixture card from the 1970s onwards. I would love to hear from anyone who might have any fixture cards from the 1950s or earlier.

Finally for this week, I wonder whether anyone has any information about these club badges, which I suspect were made in the late 1960s or early 1970s. I mentioned them earlier this year, but haven’t had an email about them. They’re quite attractive and I’ve seen only a few of them over the years. Were they, perhaps, made by the Daily News?

Ian Richardson has been lively across half forward but he will be determined to improve on his 10.10 tally for the season. One of the interesting battles will be at the stoppages with Mitch Andrews going head-to-head with one of the hardest workers in the WAFL, James Bristow. Interestingly, both are the same height at 196cm although Andrews would have a superior leap. He has had 247 hit-outs for the season (second in the league behind Perth’s Angus Graham 278) while Bristow has 149. However, Bristow’s body work around the ground can bring damaging Sharks Jamie McNamara, Liam Anthony and Cam Eardley into the game. And if the East Fremantle engine room can fire it can spark forward Brett Peake into action. The veteran has been a stand-out in his comeback season. Peake has 22 goals from eight matches, equal best in the competition with Subiaco’s Hamish Shepheard.

PEEL V EAST PERThFremantle’s youth focus could become an advantage for Peel over the next few weeks. The Dockers could be prepared to leave Matt de Boer and Michael Barlow in WAFL ranks for longer as the rebuilding AFL club fully evaluates its list. De Boer and Barlow couldn’t save the Thunder against South Fremantle last round. Each had 39 possessions. East Perth capitalized on a Peel fadeout when the teams met at Bendigo Bank Stadium in round four. The work of Julian Ameduri and Tom Cole was significant on that day. Cole will be keen to maintain his form with West Coast closely looking at the 19-year-old from Bendigo for AFL duty.

SuBiACo V WEST PERThIt was the kick in the backside Subiaco had to have. Coach Jarrad Schofield will hate that line but after two premierships and a blazing start to the campaign for a third in a row, the Lions could have been excused for being a little over-confident. East Fremantle exposed such in round eight. So it was expected that Kyal Horsley, Aaron Heal, Max Walters and Liam Ryan would make sure the same mistakes didn’t happen two weeks in a row. Claremont paid the price. West Perth has stuttered through the first eight matches. The Falcons are 4-4 but a percentage of near 85 could be problematic later in the season. After a couple of false starts loyal Falcons defender Luke Tedesco should notch his 150th match for the club.

SWAN DiSTRiCTS V SouTh FREMANTLEThe figures don’t lie. If teams can’t keep the numbers turning on the scoreboard they won’t win and Swan Districts have proved that over the past month. Since the victory over Claremont, Swans have kicked 29 goals in four matches and struggled to be competitive in each contest. While Swans officials have been impressed with the efforts of Griffin Logue, Matt Riggio and Adam Faulkner, the black and whites lack the grunt to run with sides. And that is a concern going into a battle with the league leader. Adam McIntosh, Jake Florenca, Tim Kelly and Zac Strom have taken some of the responsibilities from the senior South Fremantle players to bolster the potency of the Bulldogs.

by Ross Lewis

it was only last month when these teams previously met, yet much has changed in the WAFL landscape. When Claremont claimed a 39-point win – kicking 19.2 in the process at ATOM Stadium – it was thought the triumph would be the springboard for the Tigers’ season. But since Michael Broadbridge’s men have run into league-leaders Subiaco and South Fremantle, the AFL talent-laden Peel and West Perth, which will be the result Claremont rues the greatest in 2016. The Tigers led during the last quarter of the clash at Kulin only to be overrun by the Falcons. It sums up Claremont’s campaign so far. There were chances. Once again the Tigers led the Bulldogs going into the last term only to fall. Claremont’s percentage of 110 belies its 2-6 record and seventh placing on the ladder. The Tigers are getting plenty of drive through midfield with Tom Ledger, Ryan Neates, Jake Murphy and Jye Bolton, who has impressed since transferring from Werribee, getting plenty of the ball.

WAFCYoung umpires take to the big stageFour junior umpires from the east Fremantle and South Fremantle Districts got the opportunity to gain a behind-the-scenes pre-game experience with AFL umpires and lead them out onto the hallowed turf of Domain Stadium at the West coast and St Kilda clash on Sunday, May 15.

The Community Umpiring Round of AFL placed grassroots umpiring in the spotlight to recognise all the umpires who do a great job at community level to allow the game to be as great as it is. First-year East Fremantle umpire Fynn Gardner along with junior umpires Stene Collard, Mitch Forsyth, and Blake Rodger got

the chance to buddy with the AFL umpiring team and get a taste of their elite match day routine. “It was an amazing experience, especially seeing how big Domain Stadium is from the middle of the ground and the crowd,” Gardner said. “It gave me a greater appreciation for what AFL umpires go through each week.” The young umpires received a tour of the AFL umpire rooms where they each had the opportunity to try on the communication and broadcast vests worn by AFL field umpires. The group also had the chance to practice their centre bounce before the game and then lead the umpiring team out onto the ground where they witnessed the coin toss between Eagles Captain Shannon Hurn and St Kilda Captain Nick Riewoldt. “It made me realise that one day I would like the chance to be out there too, but I know I have a lot work ahead of me,” Gardner said. East Fremantle Umpire Chaperone Harris Cooper said it was a very special experience for the young umpires who got an in-depth understanding of what it takes to get to the top level. “It is an experience they will remember and certainly won’t be forgetting anytime soon, Cooper said. “It will be interesting to see how they take that source of motivation into the remainder of the season.” Over the past 12 months umpiring numbers have continued to grow, with a 15 percent increase in new recruits. Anyone out there keen to keep fit, earn some money and be part of a supportive team environment can register now at www.getinthegame.com.au» Junior umpires trying on the communication vests in AFL umpire rooms.

Recognise outstanding teachersNow is the time to recognise teachers who have run outstanding Australian Rules Football programs in their schools as part the 2016 Woolworths AFL School Ambassador of the Year awards. Two deserving winners will claim a trip for two to a 2016 AFL Finals game in Melbourne including flights and accommodation. Nominations by school staff and community football groups can be sent in now for outstanding programs run from August 2015 to July 2016.

The AFL School Ambassador (AFLSA) program was introduced into WA schools in 2004. The program aims to produce enhanced educational outcomes in literacy, numeracy, health and physical education by providing quality resources to schools and by recognising and rewarding teachers who strongly promote football in their school and community. Over the past 11 years there have been close to 50 category winners from nearly 30 different schools across the State.

In 2015 the West Australian Football Commission received more than 100 nominations that were shortlisted to 35 finalists. Finalists in each of the seven categories are invited to attend the Woolworths AFL School Ambassador of the Year Awards night where the winners will be announced. Nominees must be registered School Ambassadors. Nominations for the 2016 Woolworths AFL School Ambassador of the Year are now open and close on the last day of Term 2, July 1. For information on how to nominate head to the ‘School’ section at www.wafootball.com.au

When Robert cox steps into the goal square on Saturday, May 21 he will record his 1000th game as a WA Amateur Football League goal umpire. Cox started goal umpiring 27 years ago with the WAAFL. In his first season of goal umpiring he umpired two games in the then G Grade competition. Goal umpiring was a role that he fell into after training with his local side, Riverton Football Club. When the club needed a goal umpire Cox was asked to fill this position on a volunteer basis before someone suggested he should join the WAAFL. It wasn’t long before he worked his way up to the top competition where he has umpired since, racking up 191 A Grade games and 163 B Grade games.

Throughout his career as a goal umpire he has umpired both men’s and women’s football as well as being selected to umpire a State Game in 2009. He has goal umpired in 18 grand finals, the highest grade being B Grade which he umpired in 2005 and 2011. Cox’s most notable moments in goal umpiring included being involved in a couple of games that ended in a draw. Despite recording his 1000th game, Cox has no plans to retire from goal umpiring and hopes to be out on the oval for a little while longer yet. This amazing man is just the third person to reach the 1000-game milestone in Community Football Umpiring, following on from Des Morgan and Rod Clarke.

Can You Help?Since the beginning of the 1970 WAFL season there have been 4162 league debutants at an average of 93 new players per season. the WAFL player database is missing a date of birth for only 23 of these players but the birth place and junior/previous club is not recorded for a further 240 players. each week the Budget will list the playing records of eight players for whom information is sought to improve the database records. these include:

William CoX (East Perth 1963-1964, 8 games) William John KEENAN (Subiaco 1967, 7 games) ian Scott LoCKhART (South Fremantle 1986, 3 games) Glenn Waters o’RouRKE (Swan Districts 1979, 16 games) Ross harley PEARCE (Claremont 1965, 1 game) ian Michael (Mick) SELL (West Perth 1966, 1969, 9 games) Wayne ThoMSoN (East Perth 1965-1966, 2 games) Trevor David Alan TREGEAR (Subiaco 1974, 10 games)

Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson (via e mail [email protected] or message on 9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
