President's Message Bob Russo

Well, since my last message, wehave continued to have successful

events. Those of you who weren'table or decided not to attend the

Spring Social at the Ferretti'sreally missed outll Over 100 (!)people sampled the fine wines andunbelievably generous hospitalityof Catherine and Bruce. The

weather was magnificent and anultralight "flyby" capped off aperfect day.

Of course, the diehards were notsated, so about 35 of us trekked to"Bubba's Pot Belly Stove" toprolong the activities. Whilethere, we had the good fortune tomeet a charming lady who wascelebrating her 93rd birthday.Taking matters in hand, I promptlypresented her with a hat (given tome by ex-friend Kathy Williamson),with "Over the Hill" emblazoned on

it. She was thrilled and hopefullyone of our. photographers capturedher on film. Her family was veryappreciative of our attention andthanked us profusely. It certainlywas a nice feeling to add a littlesunshine to someone's life.

It is already mid-June and as Isaid last month, we are looking fora few good men (all women are good,so ladies, please volunteer also)to fill the executive positions.Don't be afraid to take on a

position because you don't have anyexperience. There are lots ofpeople to offer help and experienceto carry you through.

In 1969, the first person I met inthe Riesentoter Region was WayneFlegler. At the Christmas Banquetthat year, I sat next to a couple

(the second and third PCA people Imet) named Dick Sweigart and ConnieSheldrake. Dick and Connie married

soon after, had a little red-headedson, Richard, and continued to cometo nearly every event that the Clubsponsored. The amazing thing wasthey that always came as a family -Connie, Dick and little Richard. Imean, he was at events from toddlerstage on. In addition, they wereactive in SCCA, as Pit Stewards, timing and scoring, tech orwherever they were needed. ThePennsylvania Hillclimb Associationwas active during the seventies andDick could always be found as anorganizer, worker and an avidcompetitor. He owned many hillrecords for a long time, exemplifying the "Riesentoter"(Giant Killer) spirit to theutmost. What Dick accomplishedwith a small budget and a lot ofhard work was an enviable racingcareer. One of the stories that

best typifies Dick is told by BobHolland who as a kid used to watch

Dick pull the motor out of his 356coupe, put it in the Speedster onFriday to run the hills on theweekend, then reverse the procedureSunday night so he could drive towork on Monday! My fondest memoryis riding up the hill at Weatherlyin the passenger seat holding acamera as Dick took a practice run,so we could produce a hillclimbfilm. His familiarization run was

only 0.1 seconds slower than histimed run, which broke the EP hillrecord that day! Dick only knewone way to run - flat out!! Overthe years, Dick and Connie have run 'the hills, run autocrosses, rallyed,

attended Parades, etc. In recentyears, Dick didn't have time toprepare and maintain the Speedster, but that didn't stop him fromshoving up with Connie and Richardto work the whole day!! Dick trulyembodied the Riesentoter spirit. He enjoyed Porsches, racing, andthe people and activites of theregion. With never a raised voiceor a nasty comment about anyone,Dick was always there to pitch into help, and add years and years ofknowledge and experience.

It was with a heavy heart and afeeling of loss that we said ourlast goodbye to Dick Sweigart onTuesday, May 29, 1990. The Clubhas lost one of it's most faithful

and active members. To Connie and

Richard, our sympathies. Richardis talking of getting the Speedsterout to an event or two - that's

just the way Dick would want it.Riesentoter will miss you, Dick.Rest in Peace.

Vintage ? Not this year !

By James P. Hartman

Those of you who attended the Aprilmeeting heard Jim Carson reportthat the lack of a major sponsorhad forced the cancellation of this

year's Vintage Grand Prix.Nonetheless, the race committee hasalready set a course on making therace happen in 1991.

Riesentoter should be congratulatedfor having so much interest inhelping out with this event; 39members volunteered to help outwith race work! Thank you to allwho volunteered, and let's lookforward to helping out and havingfun next year.

Where are the New Cars?

John Williamson

While preparing for the New MembersMeeting, it became apparent to methat purchasers of newer modelPorsches are not joining the Clubas frequently as in the past. The1980s saw phenomenal growth in ourRegion, and in fact, 1983-1988 arethe top six years in terms ofnumbers of cars listed as owned byour members. The Region hascontinued its growth this year, however, the number of new memberswith cars manufactured during thelast two years is disturbing. Froma high of eighty seven 1987 modelyear cars, we drop to seventeen1989s, and only two 1990s.

In an effort to change thissituation, the position of DealerLiaison has been created, and DickBach has volunteered. Dick and I

will be visiting area Dealershipsto interest them in displaying aPGA Information Board, which hasmembership applications, as well asPANO and DER GASSER. Independentshops who express an interest willalso be considered for these

boards. Dick will be needingvolunteers to help maintain theboards on a monthly basis. BlaineHartig has already agreed to coverthe Reading area. If you areinterested in helping out, contactme at one of the numbers listed on

page 23, or Dick at 889-7770 (days)or 277-8857 (eves).

If anyone has other ideas on whatwe can do to attract the owners of

new cars, please give me a call.

Exec Committee Minutes

In attendance at the May meeting, held at the home of Debbie and BillCooper were; Bob Lamb, Bob Russo,Betsi Leidy, the Coopers, Vern Lyle,Rex and Lisa Carle, Sybil and PaulMargaritis, Janet and Jerry Weger,John Williamson, Jim Hartman andBill O'Connell.

The next several meetings are asfollows; in June, probably the Boschrepresentative will speak, optionalis the rep from Bel-Ray Oil; inJuly, Vince Evans will speak at theold Holbert Porsche Dealership inconjunction with a display of 356's.The regional Porsche manager mayalso speak, but this could make themeeting too long; August will bethe Tech Quiz from the Parade; inSeptember, the guest speaker willbe Bob Akin, Jr.

Instead of a raffle, we will hold afundraising autocross which will beopen to SCCA and others. Lisa andRex will secure a separate date. The $500 balance from last year'sraffle will be combined with the

autocross money and given to St.Christopher's Hospital. We wouldlike to have someone sponsor thetrophy, and since YBH has expressedinterest in doing something for theClub, they will be approached aboutthis. We will give a door prizeticket for tires to anyone enteredin the autocross.

Lisa will buy two dry-erase boardsand markers for $50.

The treasury has about $12,000.Some of this money may be used tosubsidize Club functions.

Vendors who wish to be Club membersmust own a Porsche, in accordancewith National By-Laws. Also, onecan be a member for only one yearbeyond the time that the person nolonger owns the marque.

PIR event will run counterclockwise

and will have plenty of safetyequipment. We may lose $1500-2000since only 70 people have signed upto date. We will still hold the

event for the benefit of those who

wish to try an oval track. TheClub made $1000 at Pocono; if wecancel PIR, we will lose $500 or$1000. We are filled in the greengroup and have enough instructorsfor same. Flagging details for PIRnot yet determined.

The Goody Store has the new 50-lapmemory Acutrak stopwatches, sellingfor $35. NTW will buy jackplatesfrom us to improve their servicingof 944s. Leitzinger merchandisewill be sold on consignment.Aluminum sockets from Stoddard will

be available for around $20.

Four DER GASSER advertisers have

not yet paid for this year, andthere is still one outstanding billfrom last year. Vem to contactonce again, then turn over toTreasurer for collection.

The New Members Meeting was notwell attended possibly becauseSaturday afternoon was less than agood choice of times. Maybe weneed a gimmick like a car show fornext year. Dick Bach will bedealer liaison. John will order

one board which will be taken to

dealers and shops to see if theywant to display them.

Tech Head, Jerry Weger, willpurchase two more torque wrenchesand 2 sockets. A list of qualifiedtech inspectors will be published,as will a list of the basic tools

and attire for Tech Sessions. It

is not advisable, for example, toarrive in a suit... There was adiscussion about a pre-Summit techsession, but the time needed toorganize this was insufficient.

By the Editor

How many of you have an interest incomputers, (and desktop publishingin particular), and have thatcapability at your office or evenat home? That should include quitea few folks in a region this size. Now that we've gotten that far, youonly need a healthy interest inPorsches, and a desire to shareyour talents with the Club, and youcan qualify to be the next Editorof DER GASSER. You would be

overqualifled actually, since thepresent Editor does it all on aword processor, then cuts andpastes. This publication, likeeverything else, can be improved,it just takes a little moretraining than I have (which isnone), a little better equipment, and a little more time. Begin tothnik about how you would do thingsif you were Editor, then let thenominating committee know that youwill accept the job for next year. And you don't have to go it alone.

10

try to get a friend to help out insome way. As I have said before, many regions have 2 or 3 "Editors"and several people on their staffs, like photographers, advertisingmanagers, designers, etc.

You really do get involved in theClub with this job - you learnabout everything before almostanyone else, you're in close touchwith all members of the Exec

Committee, and of course, you'reinvolved in all planning sessions. And just think of the pride you canfeel by seeing your work in printevery month! No region canfunction without an interesting, communicative, and very timelynewsletter. Editors don't make

that happen by themselves, but youcould be "Chief" of the city desk, with your fingers on the pulse ofRiesentoter. Think about it.

The Maple Grove Dragstrip dayhosted by the Corvette Club will beon June 23. They start around 9 amand welcome our participation. This has to be a blast, with timingand consistency playing a huge rolein your success. Yo won't hurt thecar - each run will only take 15-20seconds - it's not like thrashingaround a track all day. And it'snot just brute horsepower since itis scored on a bracket system andfinesse comes into play. Last yearMark Schnoerr showed the faster

Vettes his 928 taillights to takethe Overall win. Come on out and

get into some COMPETITION!

Decided to move the section called

Important Information to the backpage because no one seemed to readit anyway. This may be a way ofcallling it to your attention, soif you need info on address changes, placing an ad, deadlines and such, you can find it on page 23.

Greorge Bukovsky Memorial Concours

Bill & Debbie Cooper

Those of you who knew GeorgeBukovsky, know that he was one ofthe most loyal and competitiveConcours participants in the club. His meticulously kept red Porsches, first a 944 and then a 1986 911

Carrera, took many first placetrophies outside of the PorscheClub up and down the East coast. He was able to enlist the help ofhis wife, Joyce and son, George formany of the finishing touches. We'll never forget his cheerfulsmile and his active participationin many RTR activities.

George was always willing to lend ahand or give advice as to how toreally make your car shine. Duringa New Members Meeting, he sharedone of his winning secrets. (Ifyou want your rubber gaskets andhoses to shine - use a little

Pledge furniture polish.)

The Concours to honor George willbe held at the Annual Picnic in

August at Camp Hideaway, Arcola,PA. There will be a Concours entryfee of $5.00 per car (in additionto the picnic cost). In order toproperly plan for the Concours, have an adequate number of judgesand to permit scheduling timenecessary for judging the cars, theregistration form below must becompleted by Concours participantsand received by us with the $5.00check, NO LATER THAN July 31,1990. We are looking forward to aterrific event with special meaningand honoring one of our recentlydeparted friends, George Bukovsky.

AUTOCROSS 101

An early apex, typical of a novice, but also done by people who driveone gate at a time. The driverwill now have to make another turn

to avoid hitting the next pylon onthe right.

Causing another early apex. Itlooks like a straight line has beenachieved through this gate, butthere was lots of plowing going onand this line ignores the hard leftcoming up just after it.

The two previous early apexes havethe car arriving here essentiallypointed at the fence, and plowingagain, when the following gate isparallel to the fence and leadsonto the straight. This kind ofdriving is like you see on TV; kindof noisy, looks fast and flashy, but is bog slow and will remove theoutside edges of your tires.

This car is in a better positionfor a later apex, but should bepointed even more to the left atthis point. This would be possibleby appproaching from a wider angleor not turning in so soon.

A nice late apex. Compare this carplacement to the position of theAudi at left. Some speed has beensacrificed through this turn to getthe car set up for the next turnwhich leads onto the straight.

Notice where this car is pointedand that the driver can get on thegas much earlier than our friend inthe Audi. This has been set up bythe two previous turns and willensure that a much shorter time

will be spent on the long straight. This is where autocrosses are won

and lost - sometimes you have todrive three gates aheadi

Autocross News

Lisa Carle

May 20th brought us the kind ofweather we were hoping for to runour second event. The threat of

rain caused the diehards to clumpinto the first run group, withthoughts of getting at least onedry run, while the optimists optedfor the second heat, anticipatingclearing. Fortunately, it was aday for the optimists. The skiessoon cleared and left us with a

beautiful, siinny day. Our newlocation turned out to be even

better than the runway, allowingfor a large, wide-open designvaguely reminiscent of the HolbertMemorial course. This sweeping, but tricky set-up minimized thehorsepower advantage and broughtthe times closer together. Tightcompetition was the outcome; FTDwas decided by 4/1000 of a second!

Results are below. FTD went to

Vem Lyle in his recently-completed,ultra-white 911S. Here's a news

flash: the breakfast of this

champion is Suzie Q's - forget theoat bran and stop by the mini-marton your way to the next autocrossfor some high-test carbohydrates!Ladies FTD was won by Melody Lylein her red Targa, who outran themajority of the men as well.

The next event was scheduled for

August 12, but this date may bemoved up to the 5 th. We want touse the same parking lot foranother great event, our firstannual charity autocross to benefitSt. Christopher's Hospital forChildren. We are planning to openthe charity event to all types ofcars. We will pull out the Porscheclub results, and trophies will begiven out as per our normal rules. For the event as a whole, SCCAclasses and indices will be used.

As Betsi described in her article

last month, the index is a method

of comparing times based on theperformance potential of the car'sclass. The best indexed time getsthe Overall trophy. Everyone willgo home with the good feeling ofhaving donated the $15 entry fee toa very worthwhile charity. We aretrying to arrange for some othergoodies for you to take home, too.

One last word, we haven't forgottenabout the Comog Classic and aretrying to setup an early fall datefor this event that you will notwant to miss. Stay tuned!

Driver's Education

By Bob Lamb

We are in the midst of a veryactive period of Riesentoterdriving events. As this waswritten, we just finished ourinaugural program at Penske'sPennsylvania International Racewayin Nazareth, PA. The facility isnew and spotless, characterized it

club. The track is a

one-mile oval with

changes. Thereactions were mixed. We had 22

first-timers who seemed veryenthusiastic. It is an easy trackto leam. Among the moreexperienced drivers, the reactionsranged from love to hate. Thereare concrete walls surrounding thetrack. If you were on line, youcould ignore the walls. Greatconcentration was required to stayon line. If you did stay on line, however, it was very quick andchallenging. Some people wereuncomfortable with the walls. We

are interested in hearing from youabout your reaction to the track, either positive or negative.

On June 23/24, we are having anevent at Summit Point. This is a

surprise event. We had been unableto get a date for this year. However, a race cancellationoffered us the weekend. We figuredwe could not turn it down, so wehustled out a special mailing. Theevent was oversubscribed four daysafter registration opened. I guesspeople like Summit Point.

Our next event is July 21 and 22 atWatkins Glen. You should have

received an application severalweeks ago.

One of our objectives this year wasto encourage first-timers to attendour Driving events. We had 37 atPocono and 22 at Nazareth. We

thank you for your adventuresomespirit and hope you enjoyed theexperience. We would like to hearwhat your reactions were.

This year, our events are being runby a committee. There is a lot ofeffort being expended and I wouldlike to thank Dave Donohue, PaulMargaritis, Bill Miller, BillO'Connell, Bob Russo, Axel Shield, and Janet and Jerry Weger. I wouldalso like to thank those who have

helped out with flagging, tech andother miscellaneous tasks. We

could not conduct these events

without you. Your efforts are bothrecognized and appreciated. Seeyou at Summit and the Glen.

The Beach was never like this !

By Barbara Johnston

I've just experienced a magicalweekend in the "Hamptons". Fxinnything is, it took place at a racetrack and not a seaside resort.

Bridge I, sponsored by Metro Region, was an exciting, breathless drive atthe beach. Viewing ocean from threesides of the track gives a driver asense of serenity which fadesquickly during the first run group.

While the event's objectives wereto learn the track, line, apexes, and braking points, my firstproblem was getting "lost" in themiddle of the course. All of a

sudden I wouldn't recognize anylandmarks. This created panic. And before I knew it, I would findmyself along pit-out again andwonder how I got there. Somehow, after many rides around the circuitI learned the line and began toenjoy the challenge of the course. It was all coming together, andthen the first day ended! I wastired, dirty and sandblasted, butenthusiastic.

Day 2 started with high winds andsun. Car tech, safety, flagging, driving problems and generalquestions were addressed at thedriver's meeting. We were warnedthat the wind could have a

detrimental effect on handling. Iimagined my "whale tail" takingflights towards the ocean.

My instructors, Jerry Hoffman andHenry Hammer, were enthusiastic andinformative. They provided theextra support and motivation whichhelped me to trust my machine andmy judgement. They pushed me as adriver to the next plane ofenlightenment. By the afternoon, the light bulb was on. I hadfigured out how all the ups, downs, and arounds of the track went and

was having fun driving an amazinglysturdy, agile car. Our 79 911 SCwas running perfectly, even thoughtwo drivers were making it workhard often for 2 or 3 runs in a row.

My second day of flagging duty wasat pit-out. Frank Scala gave mesome pointers since I had neverworked this station before, thenhanded me the red paddles and theradio. It was intimidating. I wasout there by myself with 20 or 30anxious drivers waiting for me totell them when to go. I felt asense of accomplishment and reliefwhen each group was safely on thetrack.

At day's end, Metro had an outdoorbuffet dinner prepared for thegroup. Every dish was tasty andthere was a good variety of food.I was happy to be able to eatbefore I travelled back to

Pennsylvania. My husband and Iconsidered staying for Sunday butknew our baby sitter couldn't stayanother day. Before we left, weagreed to return this fall.

My thanks go to all the people fromMetro who organized and ran thisevent. It was a great success! Iwould recommend a weekend at

Brideghampton to any Riesentotermember. I truly felt safer on thetrack than I did on the drive

through New York City.

Riesentoter History

Debbie Cooper

I recently received two pleasantsurprises as Historian. One wasfrom Toby Ross who was in theprocess of "cleaning up" and calledto ask me what Der Gassers I was

missing in the 1980's. The otherterrific "CARE" package was sent bya former RTR President who was veryactive in the 1960's, Don Reinhard. He had taken the time to photocopyalmost all of the mid-1960 Der

Gassers, which were not in thehistorical files. Thanks to both

of you for: 1) taking the time toread the articles; and 2) forlending a helping hand. I reallydo appreciate it. Now on to alittle history....

June 1960 - "Duryea Hillclimb -Charlie Biedler pulled a fast oneby running the same car in bothClass F £ind D. How? We switched

engines Saturday night." "VinelandRaces - Roger Penske runs wild, winning two races at the SCCARegionals. Nagle Bridwell had two3rds in EP. Also competing wereHorace Ott, Jim Moyer, Wes Watt,Bill Brannan and Charlie Stover."

June 1965 - "Gymkhana Results -The Club Gymkhana held in King ofPrussia on June 6th, was verysuccessful and the weather was

perfect. The first place trophywas hotly contested with only 6/10of a second separating 1st and 4thplace cars. Dick Sweigart won tophonors once again edging out NormHahn by 2/10 of a second."

June 1970 - From the President's

Message by John Chatley, "First ofall, my apologies for not makingthe May issue of Der Gasser with a"Message". (If you missed nothaving an historical article in May,I'll borrow his words - he said itso well.)..."Part of the problem

stemmed from the fact that I began,in what would have been sufficient

time, to prepare my car for theconcours at the Parade." John was

another member who took Concours

very seriously.

June 1975 - "SAY HELLO TO THESE NEW

MEMBERS - Don and Linda Applestein,Philadelphia - 1970 911T" (In justfive short years, they will bemembers of the RTR "Fossil Club".)"Pine Grove Hillclimb was run on

May 10 and 11 in great weather, again. Tom Beil, as usual, took1st in Mod II in his RSK."

June 1980 - "As I write this, A1Holbert is taking part in a specialcoming-out at the 24-Hours of LeMans. Peter Gregg and A1 Holbertare driving the French classic inone of Porsche's new 924 Turbos

which resemble the Carrera GT studyshown at Frankfurt. Two other

identically prepared 924's havebeen entered by the factory."(Bill & I were very lucky and sawA1 drive to victory at Le Mans withHans Stuck and Derrick Bell in

1987.)

June 1985 - Excerpts from MichaelStolper's President's Message "A1 Anderson, O.D. (officer of theday); orchestrate everyone, run theevent, jump through many hoops.Jane Stolper, Registrar; listen toeveryone out there: "my dog ate theregistration form, I've alwaysadmired you, the sun got in myeyes, my shoe was untied..." BobRusso, Chief Instructor; BigKahoona wears flame proof suit toguard against verbal abuse andcomplaints about run groupassignments, he is Simon of "SimonSays" at event. Tony & EileenCheckowski, Social; insist that agood time be had by all, servemystery meat at cookout, hose downcrowd with beer every night."

Pit Stop

With Denny Waldman

Hi Folks! Let me put your mind atease; the accompanying picture isnot from a Riesentoter track

event. This is just a Porscheenthusiast's way of saving a fewbucks. You see, when he went tohis favorite autobody shop for aprice on converting his 911 into aslantnose, he realized it was wellbeyond his budget. So, with alittle ingenuity, he sacrificedsomeone's shiny new Citroen to getthat sloped, racy look he wanted sobadly. He has patented this methodand complete instructions are nowavailable. Just send $59.95 (cash)to my office for details.

Helmets needed!

As you know, Snell 85 helmets arerequired for our track events, butif you have a pre-85 helmet that islooking for a good home - why notdonate it to our autocross program?

As yet, there are no strict helmetrequirements for PCA autocrossesand we could use some replacementsfor our vintage models. Callsomeone on the Exec committee if

you can help out.

Incidentally, you should be awarethat to run in any autocrosseshosted by SCCA, a helmet with atleast a Snell 75 rating is required.
