Juno History• The Juno Awards are named in honor of Pierre Juneau, who was the very first President of the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission and former President of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In the early 1970s, Juneau was the architect of the CRTC’s Canadian content regulations which require that a certain percentage of radio and television time be devoted to programming or music which is produced in Canada. This action created a market for Canadian music and fueled the subsequent boom in music production. In 1971, Juneau received a special Juno Award, being named “Canadian music industry Man of the Year.”
• The Juno Award was originally called the RPM Gold Leaf Awards, created by “RPM Magazine” publishers. They were awarded for the first time in 1970. That evening, 250 people showed up at the doors, which was twice the number of people who had actually been invited. Anne Murray had the flu and almost didn’t make it to the ceremony. The name was changed to Juno Awards the following year, simplifying Juneau’s name.
• The ceremony was broadcast on TV for the first time in 1975. CBC had the rights at the time
• Starting in 1964, “RPM Magazine” polled its readers to determine the best artists in Canada, releasing the results in December. From 1970 to 1973, winners of the Juno Awards were announced in “RPM Magazine” prior to the awards night. Starting in 1974, the award winners were not made public until the Juno ceremonies.

CROSSWORD
JUNO AWARDS HISTORY• Starting in 1964, “RPM Magazine” polled its readers to determine the best artists in Canada, releasing the results in December. From 1970 to 1973, winners of the Juno Awards were announced in “RPM Magazine” prior to the awards night. Starting in 1974, the award winners were not made public until the Juno ceremonies.• The first Juno Award trophies were constructed from walnut, stood 18 inches (46 cm) tall, and resembled a metronome. When the ceremonies were televised beginning in 1975, the award was redesigned and was made out of clear acrylic instead, while still retaining the metronome shape. In 2000, producers complained that the trophy didn’t look good on TV and they asked for a re-design. Ontario artist Shirley Elford designed the new award, made from glass. It depicts a human figure surrounded by a nickel-coated spiral (which is symbolic of a musical staff) situated on a base of aluminum.• The Juno Awards, customarily held in Toronto, were hosted outside of Toronto for the very first time in 1991, being held in Vancouver. Since then they’ve been held in cities from coast to coast. The ceremony did not return to Toronto until the year 2011, which marked the ceremony’s 40th anniversary.
• George Wilson, who hosted for five consecutive years when the Juno Awards first began, has hosted more programs than anyone else. Burton Cummings comes in second place, with four appearances as host.• A Humanitarian Award was inaugurated in 2006. Bruce Cockburn was the first artist to be given this honor.• 1.6 million viewers watched the entire show in 2012, and 6.5 million viewers tuned in for at least part of the program. AND THE WINNER IS…• The nominations for each year’s Junos are based on an eligibility period which lasts for 13 to 14 months, ending on the mid-November prior to the awards ceremony.• The Artist of the Year and Group of the Year nominations are determined by sales and a CARAS member vote. CARAS stands for Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and they are responsible for the management and operation of the Juno Awards.• The nominees for Album of the Year and International Album of the Year are determined by sales figures. • The New Artist of the Year, New Group of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year are determined by sales in conjunction with a jury vote. TOP ARTISTS• At the 2007 ceremony, Nelly Furtado made Juno history by being the first nominee with multiple nominations to win every award for which she was nominated, including the two most prestigious honors, Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. The following year, Feist won all five categories in which she was nominated.
Vehicles need a spring cleaning too(NC)—Spring cleaning is on most people’s minds as the weather heats up. When making a spring cleaning checklist, don’t forget to include your vehicle.
Properly maintaining your vehicle is essential to increasing its average life expectancy. To help keep it running on all cylinders, follow this simple checklist to make sure you stay off the side of the road:
Check Your Vision – About 90 percent of all driving decisions are made based upon vision. Consider your options when maintaining your wiper blades: You may be able to clean them with rubbing alcohol; Replace them if they are cracked, torn, cut or streaking;
Check your owner’s manual for specifics – different cars have different sizes.
Check the Wear Pattern of your Tires – If you notice certain parts are becoming more worn than others, take a look some of the possible causes:Wear on inside and outside edges: Under-inflation Wear in center: Over-inflationCups or dips in the tread: Worn suspension partsSawtooth edges: Misalignment
Change Your Car’s Shoes – Now is the time to change tires from winter to summer or all-season, if you haven’t already.
And for those in need of new tires for their vehicle, each tire in the Goodyear Assurance family meets the needs of drivers by offering confident all-season traction plus a relevant benefit that enhances the driving experience. This product lineup includes Assurance ComforTred Touring with refined handling and comfort, Assurance TripleTred All-Season with ultra-traction, and Assurance Fuel Max with fuel efficiency.
For more helpful car care advice or information on tires for cars, minivans, trucks, SUVs and more, take charge of the road this spring and visit your local Goodyear store or go online at www.goodyear.ca.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The light that drives you forward is within and can light the way. This week, a faster pace is necessary to deal with a plethora of commitments. The wheels are turning in a direction that leads to your dreams.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Consideration conquers controversy. You will navigate the fast-moving twists and turns of the week ahead more easily if you make it a point of honor to remain cool and considerate of others.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): A little encouragement goes a long way. Look for ways to ignite your inspirations in the week ahead. When you are known throughout your community, you can more easily demonstrate integrity.CANCER (June 21-July 22): Ratchet up the rhythm. In the week ahead, get up and at ‘em, since shrinking violets risk being trampled by those in a hurry. If you are tempted to flirt, be sure to flirt with only the best people.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): How you perceive the strength of the wind depends on your perspective this week. In front of the wind, you might view the onslaught as overwhelming. If moving with the wind, you might see it as an advantageous force.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Enthusiasms can be contagious. You may stand out as someone’s hero or heroine. Someone can light a fire under your ambitions and provide concrete encouragement in the upcoming week.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Sleepwalkers receive a wakeup call. Your fantasies can give you inspiration, but you could be blind to the drawbacks or oblivious to the obvious. A family situation could be mystifying in the week ahead.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Turn your face to the sun like a sunflower. To grow and gain strength in the upcoming week, focus on what makes you happy. Be cautious of fantasies that thrive under a facade.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The darker the room, the more you appreciate light. A special someone can act as a good sounding board for creative ideas in the week ahead. Use your extra energy wisely, whether to entertain a lover or to find moneymaking ideas.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Not everything important will be revealed at first glance. Take your time about making an important decision in the week ahead. You may learn that the more you resist change, the more things change.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Press the “pause” button. During the week ahead, you may have more than one opportunity to take stock of your financial situation. Enjoy some needed relief from unexpected bills and responsibilities.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A visionary outlook or an artistic flair can be a valuable asset this week. Blend your energy with that of others to create a powerful force that can lead to success. Be open to new viewpoints.

10 Tips to Restore Female Hormone
Balance cont’d3. De-Stress. De-stressing your life is the most important step you can take on the road to control female hormone imbalances. High cortisol levels that are produced in response to chronic stress can wreak havoc in your hormone production. 4. Add Ground Flax. 2 tablespoons of ground flax daily in the diet has been shown to reduce estrogen related cancers by as much as 70%! 5. Detoxify the Liver. The Liver is responsible for excessive hormone elimination from our bodies. As your body is continuously exposed to a myriad of environmental and dietary toxins the liver can no longer properly cleanse our body. The build up of toxins leads to conditions such as estrogen dominance, fibroids, ovarian cysts, PMS symptoms and hormone related acne.

TOP ARTISTS• In 1992, Bryan Adams set a Juno Awards record by being nominated in seven categories. The following year, Céline Dion matched Bryan Adams’ previous record-setting seven nominations.• In 1985, singer k.d. lang famously accepted her award for Most Promising Female Vocalist dressed in a floor-length vintage satin wedding dress and cowboy boots. She bounded onto the stage, did a little hoedown, and (since she was voted ‘most promising’) made many promises, including promising to “continue to sing for only the right reasons” before curtsying to the crowd.
• When Eddie Schwartz went to give his acceptance speech for the Most Promising Male Vocalist award in 1982, he took a big swig of beer on live TV. Afterwards two police officers reprimanded him, telling him that was illegal before finally releasing him back into the show.ANECDOTES• In 1983, the hosts held up a compact disc and explained that this new medium was going to be the wave of the future. Host Burton Cummings had never seen a CD before then.• Bryan Adams was unable to attend due to air travel disruptions caused by the Icelandic ash cloud in 2010. He received

his Allan Waters Humanitarian Award via satellite.• In 1990, Alannah Myles, who opened the broadcast with her hit “Love Is” did her own hair and makeup at home. She had forgotten to book a limo so her drummer had to drive her to the stage door, where she made it just in the nick of time.• When Shania Twain was hosting in 2003, she wore six custom-designed outfits emblazoned with different hockey team logos throughout the evening.• Ronnie Hawkins inadvertently tore a hole in his tuxedo pants onstage in 1981.IT’S A FACT• In the mid-1970s, singer/songwriter David Bradstreet won a Juno award as Most Promising Male Vocalist. By the 1980s he’d fallen on hard times, having strained his voice and grown disenchanted with the industry. He half-jokingly tried to sell his Juno at a garage sale, but the $15,000 price tag he put on it discouraged any buyers. Not long afterwards he began recording film scores in his home studio, and began touring again in the 1990s. He won even more Junos in 1999, 2000, and 2002, which he presumably did not sell at garage sales.
Give your house a speedy transition to summer
(NC)—The summer months are equated with school vacation, pool parties, and neighbourhood cookouts. Before you kick off the season and begin inviting guests for summertime celebrations, make sure you give your home a pre-season spruce up. Take a look at these tips from the Reliable Corporation to help you prepare:
• Store away heavy bedding, replacing with lighter bedcovers and linens. Keep stored fabrics smelling fresh, while warding off moths by dabbing cotton balls with essential oils and place in the corners of closets or drawers.
• Be clever with your time when it comes to firing up the grill: steam clean it. The new and popular EnviroMate Brio (EB250) is a natural alternative to scrubbing grates with harsh chemicals – and as Reliable points out, this type of cleaning method will never damage stainless steel.
• Dig out the patio and backyard furniture, such as chairs, tables, and umbrellas. Clean with the power of steam to rid items of pollen and dirt.

Lancelot looks rough. He has every right to look that way considering he’s had a very rough go in life so far. At some point this boy must have been someone’s pet. However it is clear that for quite some time now he has been surviving on his own. He was found as a starving stray and a kind human began feeding him. Lancelot probably used several of his nine lives when he was attacked by a coyote. The coyote had poor Lancelot in his jaws and only dropped him because a person intervened and chased the coyote off. Lancelot arrived at Katie’s Place in very bad shape. Over the weeks he’s been receiving the care he needs to recover, and learning to enjoy human company again. It took him a bit of time to fully trust us and now he’s become a volunteer favorite. Lancelot has a funny walk and scars to show
all he’s been through but otherwise he’s a sweet, loving boy who needs a safe home where he will be loved again. Hedwig is our version of Grumpy Cat. He has a wise owl like face that has us convinced he is capable of mind control. He is a striking cat
with gorgeous eyes and has already captivated most of the volunteers. It seems that anyone who looks his way falls immediately in love, thus our belief in the mind control theory. Hedwig loves to play and has been seen rolling around playing with his catnip toys. Of course he only does this when he’s not aware we are watching. He’s far too refined for that sort of silly cat like behaviour. Hedwig came to us from another shelter and we have been told that sometimes he pees outside the box. But we are certain in the right home this can be corrected. Some cats are simply finicky about their litter and a change in the type of litter used may be all that this amazing boy needs. If you have it in your heart to give Hedwig a chance you will be rewarded in many ways. And maybe he will even spare you the mind control.

Q: I read in your column about J.C., from Oregon, whose dog was having breathing (problems), which sounds like what our dog used to experience. She’d been leash trained and always pulled. I began to think I was harming her and purchased a harness instead for our Beagle/Pekeapoo mix. Was I right, and could a harness be more useful? - M.W., Canton, IL
A: “You’re right that constant pulling on the leash can affect a dog’s breathing, and even create pressure on the eyes (possibly leading to glaucoma),” says veterinary behaviorist Dr. Gary Landsberg, of Thornhill, Ontario, Canada. “A harness or head halter is definitely preferred.” Many veterinarians also believe that “choke collars” can cause or contribute to collapsing tracheas later in life. You could consult a dog trainer or certified dog behavior consultant on how to encourage your dog to walk on a loose leash. Clicker training can be a great tool for this. There are also some excellent video examples teaching techniques at www.abrionline.org.
“HYDE PARK ON HUDSON’’: Rather than merely doing an impersonation, Bill Murray makes a surprisingly credible Franklin Delano Roosevelt in director Roger Michell’s (“Notting Hill’’) portrait of the president during a weekend visit from British royalty (Samuel West, Olivia Colman) at his home in upstate New York. Not only is he concerned with affairs of state, but also with another affair ... specifically, the one he has with a distant cousin (Laura Linney). Olivia Williams and Elizabeth Wilson also star. DVD extras: two “making-of ’’ documentaries; audio commentary by Michell and producer Kevin Loader; deleted scenes. ***
“BOSS: SEASON TWO’’: The sophomore season of the Starz drama series turned out to be its last, but not for any lack of memorable acting by Kelsey Grammer, still ferocious as imperious - and secretly ill - Chicago Mayor Tom Kane. The saga resumes with a shocking attack that has long-range effects on Kane and those closest to him ... though getting close to him is, admittedly, not an easy thing. Notable cast additions for this round include Sanaa Lathan as Kane’s chief of staff and Jonathan Groff (“Glee’’) as a relative newcomer to the political scene. Among other returnees are Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Martin Donovan, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson and Troy Garity. ***
“INSIDE MEN’’: Initially shown last summer on BBC America, this well-written drama about acting on the evils of temptation casts Steven Mackintosh (“Luther’’), Ashley Walters and Warren Brown as employees of a British money-counting firm who decide to take advantage of their jobs. They plan a robbery that will make them immediately wealthy, but the moral and psychological fallout from the heist turns out to be much more than they bargained for. ***
“ORCHESTRA OF EXILES’’: The roots of the Israel Philharmonic are traced in director Josh Aronson’s documentary, detailing how Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman spearheaded a four-year effort to spirit Jewish musicians out of Nazi Germany and assemble them into an orchestra. The resulting story is expectedly affecting on a number of levels, including the artistic and emotional ones. ***

▶ The Bluefish Caves in the Yukon reveal the oldest evidence of humans ever found in North America. Tools uncovered in the caves were found to be nearly 25,000 years old, when it’s generally accepted that the North American continent has only been inhabited by humans for about 12,000 years.
▶ The world’s strongest current is found in the Nakwakto Rapids at Slingsby Channel, British Columbia. The current has been measured at speeds up to 29 km/hr (18.4 mph).
▶ In 1914 a hunter shot a black bear. A soldier subsequently bought the bear’s orphaned cub from the hunter for $20, naming her after his hometown of Winnipeg. The cub became the regiment’s mascot, accompanying them to World War I, where the cub was donated to the London Zoo. She became known as Winnie, and a young boy named Christopher Robin Milne re-named his toy teddy bear Winnie after seeing her at the zoo. Christopher’s father wrote the stories about Winnie the Pooh because of this bear cub.
