Clubs ClassesMeet Friendship Circle Member Liisa Karjalainen Liisa grew up on the southwest coast of Finland near the Baltic Sea in a family with four siblings. Her parents owned a tailor shop. While in high school she received an apprenticeship as a commercial artist and worked in advertising for a newspaper/newsletter. This was the cornerstone for her ongoing career.

As a young girl Liisa dreamed of traveling to the United States. With the help of an American uncle who lived in San Francisco, she was able to immigrate to the U.S after a six-year wait. At the age of 24 she moved to San Mateo where she ultimately received a degree from the College of San Mateo to conduct home inspections for residential buildings. She then attended Laney College in Oakland and received credentials which allowed her to pursue her career in newspaper commercial art printing.

Her interest in real estate started in the mid-60s with the opportunity to purchase a small apartment house in Berkeley which needed a lot of work. Liisa volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and through this affiliation garnered the skills she needed to upgrade the apartments herself. She continued her volunteer work for six years while working as an independent commercial artist in an advertising agency at night. She sold the apartment building and purchased another in Oakland.

Working independently as a commercial artist allowed Liisa to pursue skiing. She also became an instructor for cross country skiing.

Liisa met Ruth Levy in 1974 in Modesto through mutual friends. They enjoyed skiing together and working together in real estate. They married in 2014 and moved to Sonoma 13 years ago where they lived in a Finnish American Home Association residential community—a unique non-profit that provides Finnish cultural activities.

They love living Oakmont where they are active members of Rainbow Women. When they are not enjoying the golf course views from their home, they may be out playing a round of golf.

Liisa and Ruth really enjoyed Friendship Circle’s away trip to Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this year. In addition, they love the day excursions as well as the luncheons, especially when music is involved.

Gilbert & Sullivan’s Princess Ida Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San FranciscoSunday, February 2Join Friendship Circle for a relaxing ride into San Francisco and enjoy this fantastically entertaining production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Princess Ida.

Written as a satire on feminism, women’s education, and Darwinian evolution, Lamplighters’ own version of Princess Ida modifies this slightly to reflect modern views. With so many women running for president these days, it will be fun to see what Gilbert & Sullivan and Lamplighters will create together on these oh, so timely topics!

Lamplighters Music Theatre was founded in 1952 to produce the comic operas of librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan, and is now recognized as one of the world’s pre-eminent Gilbert & Sullivan companies. Critically acclaimed artistic successes for the Lamplighters include honors for Best Production and Best Director at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England and local awards in nearly every performance, direction, and design category. The hallmarks of a Lamplighters production are lavish costumes and sets, live orchestra, excellent comic acting, and gorgeous unamplified singing that showcases the beauty and purity of the human voice. Boxed Lunches will be handed out when you meet the bus. Each boxed lunch includes a sandwich, chips, and a baked cookie. Please choose one of the following sandwich options and include your choice when making your reservation:

Turkey Sandwichoven-roasted turkey breast, emerald greens, tomato, red onion,

“AN ENTERTAINING STORY ABOUT THE INCREDIBLE BOND THAT WOMEN SHARE” – BROADWAY WORLD

Join your friends for this culturally enriching day in San Francisco! Take a leisurely ride across the Golden Gate Bridge and into the heart of the city for a private group lunch at Daily Grill. After lunch, we’ll walk along Union Square (less than five minutes) to SF Playhouse. At the theater, we’ll meet SF Playhouse Co-Founder Bill English for a private pre-show lecture followed by the award-winning and critically acclaimed show, Real Women Have Curves. In a tiny factory in East L.A., five full-figured Latina employees work to deliver an impossible order. As the threat of deportation and cultural pressures mount, the women must navigate issues of self-image while uniting to achieve their goals. Real Women Have Curves is a microcosm of the Latina immigrant experience that celebrates real women’s bodies, the

power of women, and the incredible bond that happens when women work together.

Members of the Osher Marin JCC plan to have lunch at Daily Grill as well as attend the same showing of Real Women Have Curves at SF Playhouse. Please encourage your friends who live in Marin to join this JCC trip! We look forward to being reunited for this special outing!

Lunch at Daily Grill is included and will include a starter, a choice of three main entrees, dessert, coffee & tea, tax and gratuities. Lunch options will be listed in the Friendship Circle March/April Newsletter.

Cost: $94 Members; $108 Guests (includes round-trip transportation, all-inclusive lunch, pre-show lecture, theater ticket, two trip escorts, parking, tolls, tax, gratuity, and snacks along the way).
