52019 GREAT VIC BIKE RIDE

Welcome to the 2019 Great Vic Bike RideThe greatest Great Vic ever. It’s a big call, isn’t it? I like to be bold, but when the team showed me this slogan I was ready to send them back to the whiteboard. There’s been 35 incredible Great Vics, all filled with magic moments. How could we possibly outdo them all?

But then the team showed me the map. It looked like it started in the middle of the Nullarbor. I thought they’d gone mad; which was kind of exciting. The Great Vic has often stuck a toe in another state, but never a whole leg.

Better still the riding stacked up. It was challenging but wasn’t going to break people. And still left heaps of time for relaxation and fun out of the saddle. I was in. The greatest Great Vic ever. I can’t wait.

As the Great Vic is the friendliest event you’ll ever be a part of, whether this is your first or thirty-first ride, you’ll soon become a member of the 2019 Great Vic community. Sharing a dinner table, a headwind, nocturnal noises and a warmed toilet seat tends to bring people together very quickly.

And in years to come as you pull up a map and show people that you rode a bike from here to there, or tell them about a place you went for a swim and a night you went a little crazy, I’m sure you’ll agree, this was the greatest Great Vic ever.

Craig Richards Chief Executive Officer

Bicycle Network acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands on which we are travelling through. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and future, and the Aboriginal Elders of other communities who we may meet along the way.

72019 GREAT VIC BIKE RIDE

A flying startWelcome to the greatest Great Vic ever! Whether you’re joining us in Robe or Port Fairy, we look forward to making your arrival as smooth as possible. Once you’ve hit the ground at your arrival site, we suggest you:

> STEP 1: SET-UP YOUR CAMPSITE Check the campsite map at the arrivals area for your preferred location.

> STEP 2: COLLECT YOUR RIDER PACK Visit our Rego Hub to get your pack. This includes your ride guide, bag tags, bike tag and passport, as well as some great offers from our partners.

Remember your Great Vic passport is your ticket to the campsites and all essential services, so please keep it on you at all times.

> STEP 3: GET YOUR BIKE READY Remove any packaging you’ve used when transporting your bike (and dispose of it thoughtfully), make sure your seat, brakes and handle bars are in the right positions, and fit your bike and bag tags. We’ve also got a mechanic on hand for anything a little trickier!

> STEP 4: ENJOY Go for a wander, enjoy a drink at the Bridge Road Brewers Bar or just say g’day to your fellow riders – whatever takes your fancy.

Thanking our membersWe love our members – we couldn’t exist without them. To celebrate and say thank you to the members who are joining us on the Great Vic Bike Ride, we’ve organised a special treat for you in the Bridge Road Brewers Bar at Portland (25 November) and Deans Marsh (1 December) from 3 – 5pm.

We’re a child safe organisationAt Bicycle Network, children are vital and active participants in our organisation, so we’re proud to have developed a child safe culture that promotes the wellbeing and safety of children. Our Child Safe Policy is designed to keep children safe when they interact with us, and as a part of this policy, we’ve made some operational changes on the Great Vic this year. These changes help to create an environment where children are safe, happy and empowered, so we know you’ll support them too!

Camping optionsGeneral campingGeneral camping is included in your ticket, which is a site for your tent and your bike. We don’t reserve or allocate individual sites, so each day camping is first in, best dressed. We do ask that you’re mindful of space, bring a suitably sized tent to minimise your footprint and keep clear of any signed ‘no camping’ areas

Quiet campingOur quiet camping area is perfect for those seeking a little tranquility with their camping experience. With an early ‘lights out’ of 9.30pm, we ask quiet campers to keep noise levels to a minimum and respect the serenity of the quiet camping area. Quiet camping is included in your ticket, and is first-in, best-dressed.

SchoolsOur schools camping area is set-aside for school groups and is home to the Ride2School activities area.

Women’s CommunityOur Women’s Community camping area is aimed at making it easier for our solo female riders or those who want to ride with like-minded women to find each other. Look for the purple Women’s Community flag!

Dome and stand-up tentsUpgraded to our dome and stand-up tents? We’ve got a camping area set aside just for you! Our talented Sleep Easy team will set-up and pack-down the supplied tents each day, and transport your luggage on a dedicated truck.

! You’ll find the campsite maps for

each site located at the Bicycle Network container in Main Street, and in the Good Oil each night

Your luggageEach day on the Great Vic, we’ve got your luggage transport sorted. You just need to:

1. Pack your personal gear and camping equipment into two bags (max 10kg per bag)

2. Self-load your luggage onto the closest luggage truck

3. Take note of the truck number that you pack your luggage into, so you know where to look at the next campsite

At the next campsite, simply:

1. Locate your luggage truck number2. Grab your friends and family, and help

unload the bags off the truck

Hint: If you arrive later to camp and can’t find your bag, it may have just been moved to allow room for tents – have a look around the truck and the nearby tents, or contact Event Assistance.

! For the safety of all those assisting in loading and unloading luggage, bags must be no more than 10kg each.

Phone and e-bike chargingWe’ve got ChargeSpot on site every day to keep you powered up!

For e-bikes, make sure you drop off your battery early to get the longest possible charge, as we are unable to charge e-bikes overnight. If you do choose to drop your e-bike battery off later in the afternoon, the team will still be happy to charge it for you, but will only be able to charge the battery until 15 minutes prior to the charging station closing time.

We’re riding towards our greenest Great Vic ever! The Great Vic has long led the charge in sustainable event experience, and we’ve always been proud of the efforts of the event community in reducing our environmental footprint.

From our requirement for reusable plates, cutlery and cups on site, to the removal of 20,000 single-use plastic pieces from our dessert packaging in 2018, each year we review our operations to make sure we’re playing our part in the war on waste. 2019 is no exception, and we’re pleased to share we have three core changes to our operations this year.

1. Food Waste Composting: Last year, we trialled food waste composting at two sites, and thanks to you, it was a great success! So this year we’re rolling it out across the event and as a result, we expect to divert an additional 12 tonnes of waste from landfill.

2. Lunch Packaging: Always tricky due to food safety requirements, this is one we’ve been working on for a few years. In 2019, we’ve removed the plastic from our lunch packs and replaced it with eco- friendly options – that’s another 25,000 single-use units banished!

3. Bulk & Package Free Goods: At breakfast service, you’ll notice a few things look a little different. We’ve moved away from single-serve yoghurts to bulk tubs, and eliminated most of the packaging on our take-away snacks.

Sadly, due to the current recycling environment in Victoria, this year we won’t have full recycling services on site so you won’t see the yellow-lidded bins. However, we’ll still be recycling our bulk cardboard (from bike transport and the kitchen) as well the cans from the bar, and expect our other initiatives to have a far greater impact on reducing the waste we send to landfill.

As always, it takes a team effort to make these initiatives work. You can help by:

> Using reusable plates, cutlery, keep cups and straws for your meals or when purchasing from food vendors (and utilising our wash stations to keep them clean)

> Bringing a small container to carry your morning snack (muffins, etc.)

> Reducing food waste by taking only what you need

> Separating your food waste from your general waste and into the appropriate bins

Living your best campsite lifeThe best part of the Great Vic is that for one whole week, your family grows by thousands, and our campsite becomes your home. As with any share-house, we have a few ground rules aimed at making the experience a great one for everyone.

So, in consideration of your own well-being, as well as that of your fellow riders, we ask that you kindly:

On the road Key route times:

Rider departure: 6.30am – 8.30am daily

*Day 10 departure: 6.30am – 8.00am

Please be aware that if you commence riding outside of these times, we are unable to support your journey.

; Spending money and mobile phone

; Basic first aid kit and bike tool kit

DO > Tidy up after yourself and place all waste in the bins around the campsite and at rest areas

> Speak kindly to one another and look after yourself and those around you

> Wash your hands regularly, especially at meals times

> Wash your dishes after every meal

> Seek medical assistance if you feel unwell

> Let Event Assistance know if any of the amenities are out of order or need restocking

Along the routeREST AREASRest areas are located every 25-30km along the route. Here you can access first aid, water, coffee and toilets.

LUNCH STOPLunch is located about 50km into the days riding. It’s a super-sized rest area with first aid, toilets, water, lunch and some vendors.

BIKE MECHANICSOur bike mechanics can be found at the lunch stops. We also have limited mobile assistance so if you find yourself in trouble out on the road, contact Event Assistance.

SAG WAGONSOur SAG (Support and Gear) wagons support riders who are unable to continue riding, from injury, illness or mechanical issues.

If you need a SAG, please find a safe spot off the road and put your bike upside down to indicate you need help. You can also call Event Assistance to log your request.

Please note that our SAG wagons travel along the rider route at slow speed, so this is not an express service back to campsite.

WARBYSFounded by volunteer Tony Barter, the WARBY (We Are Right Behind You) team is a team of volunteer riders who can help you learn basic mechanical skills and provide that little extra support you may need to get through the day.

ROUTE MARSHALS AND TRAFFIC CONTROLLERSMarshals and traffic controllers are located along the route to help support your ride and minimise the impact on other road users. Please follow their instructions in relation to:

> Directions: they’ll help you know when or how to make a turn

> Intersections: they’ll help you through busy intersections

> Hazards: they’ll identify and give clear instructions to help you avoid hazards

Please note that marshal instructions apply only to riders, while traffic controller instructions apply to all road users (including riders).

Looking after yourselfDEHYDRATIONDehydration is one of the most common reasons riders are unable to complete their ride on the Great Vic. Fortunately, it’s easily avoidable. We recommend:

> Hydrate well each morning before you hit the road

> Carry at least two water bottles and fill them up at each rest area

> Utilise hydration products such as hydrolyte at regular intervals, particularly on longer-distance and high-temperature days

> Avoid too much alcohol in the afternoons / evenings

COLD / HEAT STRESSIt wouldn’t be a Great Vic without a bit of rain and strong heat. To minimise the impact to your health on days where the weather is extreme, please remember to:

> Wear appropriate clothing but always carry additional layers, including a rain jacket

> Wear appropriate water-resistant footwear

> Reapply sunscreen regularly and be sunsmart with a hat and protective clothing

> When it’s cold, keep moving as much as you can. When it’s hot and you’re taking a break, find some shade ! Please remember

to bring any personal

medication or injury prevention devices, such as braces, with you. If you need them at home, you’ll probably need them here too!

Celebrating three Great Vic legendsThe Great Vic is a family affair – whether you come with your family or join ours as a rider or volunteer. It’s the people and their spirit that make this event work and shape the experiences we all have over the week.

Sadly though, this year’s been a tough one for the Great Vic family with the passing of three much-loved and long-standing team members:

HOSTS

John McCurdy Campsite Team Leader & Life Member

Wendy Margetts Signs Crew & Life Member

Taivi Collins SSM Security

In their own individual way, John, Wendy and Taivi had a profound impact on the Great Vic and wider Bicycle Network communities, so please join us at the 7pm rider briefing on Monday night as we share a few stories and celebrate their contributions over so many years.

Thank youAs we celebrate our 36th year of the Great Vic, there’s so many people we’d like to thank for their generous contribution to this epic event.

First and foremost, our dedicated volunteers. In 1975, you founded our organisation and kick-started some of Australia’s most iconic events. Since then you have continually shared your time, knowledge, kindness and skills with so many others. From those who’ve been with us for 30 years to those who’ve just joined us for the first time – thank you for helping make bike riding easier, and for bringing the ‘spirit of Great Vic’ to life every year.

To the councils, local communities and stakeholders, thank you for opening your doors, gates and roads to our community, and for so generously sharing that country hospitality Australia is famous for.

Finally, we’d also like to acknowledge our dedicated contractors who work so hard behind the scenes to help shape and deliver the Great Vic every year. It’s a tough gig, especially when we drag you half-way across SA for an extra couple of days, so thanks for digging deep again.

A huge thanks to Paul and the team at Atmosphere Events, all the gang at Ballarat Coachlines, the magical Paula from Echo Printing & Graphics, Mark and all the night-owls from SSM Security, our brilliant Catering Team led by Jeff and Anthony as well as Luke Bramston and Emma Hunter who all pitch in to keep us well-fed, John Stracey, Stubbsy & Garry, Shane from GAME Traffic and Contracting (so glad you’re back!), Jase and the hard-working crew from Whitfords, Andy Williams, Ivan from PRG, Viking, Keiran and his dedicated team from Foott Waste, Geoff & Janette Morris, Medical Edge and the legendary Liam from Hub.

Great Vic is truly a team effort, we would be lost without you!
