Lead by Example:y

Leading by example is the most obvious way to be a leader, as we all to want to set a good example and show others the way This is often sensible and practical toa good example and show others the way. This is often sensible and practical to effectively get things done but please be careful and avoid trying to do everything yourself, if people don’t have anything to do they will lose interest and may leave.

Lead by Delegation

This helps avoid the pitfalls of trying to do everything yourself, by delegating tasks amongst the Officers and Committee you will have more time on the keeping an overview on the Committee’s activity as a whole, more will get done and you will have a stronger Committee behind you. Clearly delegation is a tricky skill to master and it also relies on there being enough suitable Committee Members to delegate to.

Lead by Consultation

If you want to make people feel part of something ask them what they think, they may have a good idea and possibly spot a flaw in your ideas. People are often reluctant to contradict the Chairman so be careful in assuming that silence equals approval. Clearly you shouldn’t consult on everything as nothing would get done and you would look indecisive Often simply consult with your fellow Officers especially on the tricky issueindecisive. Often simply consult with your fellow Officers, especially on the tricky issue of delegation as they may be able to advise suitable Committee Members for particular tasks/events. Also consider consultation with your predecessor(s) as they’ve “been there and got the t-shirt” on most things.

Lead by Succession Planning

To allow the Committee and RICS matrics as a whole to continue to flourish we needTo allow the Committee and RICS matrics as a whole to continue to flourish we need to ensure that there are others carry on the good work. Through the use of Delegation and Consultation you can ensure proper Succession Planning, i.e. you have a Vice-Chairman and Officers in place and there are a number of potential candidates for the future in positions able to prove them selves. Also from a purely practical basis, ask the question: “What would happen if I got hit by a bus tomorrow?” The most important area of Succession Planning is working with your Vice-Chairman.

These Skills are ones that Chairmen should try to blend and use, clearly their use and relevance will vary between different Local Groups, individuals, circumstances and time-pressures You may have experience of serving under several past Chairmen in your local group and consider how they blended these skills and to what effect.
