RICS: Who we are and what we do

We provide the following services which aide the delivery of this database:

➢ We are a professional body that accredits and regulates professionals within the land, property and construction sectors worldwide

➢ Our membership is over 120,000 qualified members and more than 80,000 students and trainees

➢ Not just the UK – out membership spans across 146 countries

➢ Out primary objective is the development of international standards:

➢ Sustainability,

➢ Property measurement,

➢ Construction,

➢ Ethics,

➢ And many more.

RICSRICS strive to support and drive sustainability standards within the built environment. Some examples include:

➢ RICS Professional Statement:

➢ This mandates a whole life approach to reducing carbon emissions within the built environment.

➢ Founding members Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GABC):

➢ The GABC is a coalition of over 90 countries working towards solutions for reducing CO2 emissions from buildings and urban areas, which RICS co-funded and launched at COP21 in 2015

➢ European Climate Change Toolkit:

➢ The Toolkit calculates an individuals assets climate change risk profile to help guide investment and active asset management strategies.

➢ European Data Project

➢ EU Building Stock Observatory

➢ Embodied Carbon linked to cost data

➢ Life Cycle Evaluator: New RICS product linking embodied carbon data and Life Cycle Costs

Background

➢ The RICS Buildings Carbon Database was originally commissioned by WRAP and the UK Green Building Council (UK GBC)

➢ With the aim to capture embodied carbon data for whole buildings

➢ The RICS Building Carbon Database is an evolution of the WRAP Embodied Carbon Database

➢ With a continued relationship with UK GBCOrganisations who have contributed to the successful launch of the Buildings

Carbon Database

➢ Supports the RICS professional Statement: Whole Life Carbon Assessment for the Built Environment

➢ Freely available to all

➢ Users to input construction project data into database and to allow users to estimate / benchmark whole life carbon emissions

➢ The aim of this database is to allow users to identify where carbon reductions can be made

Purpose of RICS Building Carbon Database

There are three stages of the RICS Buildings Carbon Database:

1. Maintain the database (← Current Phase)

2. Update

➢ This phase will follow once the database has been live for a certain

period of time

➢ This will allow for user feedback to be collected and evaluated

3. Enhance and develop

Progress So Far➢ The database has had a ‘facelift’

➢ Data resilience and cyber security have been enhanced

➢ The database had a soft launch before Christmas 2018

➢ Flurry of newly registered users

➢ But no new projects uploaded thus far

Evolution of Database

Database Tools: ‘New Project’

Two tools available to upload construction data: Two options when uploading using Wizard tool:

➢ Upload using the Wizard: Set by step

➢ Directly into an Excel template: Upload excel file

➢ Life cycle (results separated by life cycle stages)

➢ Whole life (one value representing a combination of lifecycle stages)

Database Tools: ‘Team Projects’

‘My Group’s Projects’ Benefits of tool:

This tool allows the user to instantly view and download data from other projects that have been uploaded from their organisation

➢ Easy comparison/benchmarking for within the organisation

➢ Simple to find

➢ Quick access

Database Tools: ‘Search Database’

How to use: Benefits of tool:

➢ Filter the search by project type

➢ By desired lifecycle stage

➢ And by CO2/CO2e

➢ Allows benchmarking to user building specifications

➢ Download all relevant datasets, combined or separate (simple comparisons)

➢ All data is exportable to Excel

Please Register to Access the Database The database is free to use and available to everyone to register.

However in order for the database to meet requirements and remain successful – we need new projects to be uploaded by its users.

This database is for the good of the industry and will only be supported by RICS if the industry needs and uses it.
