How Low Can Oil Go? Prachi Sadekar

In recent months, oil prices have plummeted, causing a panic in the financial world. For consumers such as ourselves, with the objective of saving money, reduced oil prices are very similar to tax cuts. In fact, Jacob Oubina, a senior U.S economist at RBC Capital Markets, stated that the advantages of the cost decrease “heavily outweigh the negatives.” Many financial experts on Wall Street had bet that the price of oil wouldn’t drop below a certain level much like they had previously thought that housing prices would never fall. This however turned out to be false as on January 20, oil prices fell to a 12-year low of $26.55 a barrel, almost $75 below the cost as of mid-2014. This plunging drop was found to be more than 70 percent sparking the question: what is causing this sudden drop of price?

Over the past several years, the United States has almost doubled its domestic production of oil, leaving countries like Saudi Arabia and Nigeria to suddenly start competing for sale in the Asian markets. All over the world, countries are pumping more oil for their own use and the usual oil-producing countries are not able to sell as much as they did in the past. Supply and demand, in fact, is the main cause of the falling prices. Of course, while we see this as a perfect opportunity to travel more cheaply,

is the main cause of the falling prices. Of course, while we see this as a perfect opportunity to travel more cheaply, oil-producing countries are suffering both economic and political turbulence. Even states within the US such as Alaska, North Dakota and Texas are facing economic conflict. Many oil companies such as Chevron, Shell and BP have announced layoffs in order to save money while other, smaller companies have resorted to cutting dividends, selling assets or in some extreme cases, filing bankruptcy.

So, what happened to OPEC's (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) influence on oil? The RBC Capital Market analysts have calculated that the plans of drilling half a million barrels of oil per day were either canceled or delayed in the last year alone. Analysts also believe that because of the unwillingness of OPEC to stabilize the markets by cutting production, oil continues to be over-supplied, causing prices to fall. Even though some countries in OPEC are calling for a production cut, Iraq is pumping more oil than ever and Iran is also expected to become a large exporter. It is expected that, if these prices remain constant for another year, Saudi Arabia and Persian Gulf countries will lose about $300 billion.

In my opinion, lower oil prices are here to stay for a long

time. At least until the demand supply dynamics reverse, either

with a major production decrease or a surge in world economic

growth. So, my advice is to enjoy driving cheaply while you can.

The Stock Market May Take a

Bite Out of Apple Vignesh Mulay

Usually, a company that is

selling hundreds of millions of

products is one that is admired

and supported from all

perspectives. However, that might

not be the case for legendary

technology giant, Apple Inc.

In terms of cold hard facts,

Apple, predicted to have sold 76

million iPhones and to have

profited $18.2 billion this quarter,

undoubtedly impresses. If those

figures hold true, Apple would not

only surpass its own quarterly

profit high, but would set the

record for any US company ever.

At this point, most would be

thinking that Apple is soaring high,

but instead, very real problems lie

ahead. As CNNMoney reports,

“Apple, the company, is doing

great. Apple, the stock, is not.”

Specifically, Apple’s stock, in the

New York Stock Exchange, has

plummeted nearly 30% in a single

year and 9% in January alone

despite record numbers. Investors,

both major and minor, have not

only questioned Apple’s future, but

have become seriously concerned

regarding it.

The most significant cause

of Apple’s downfall is its product

demand disparity. Apple’s record-

breaking numbers are increasingly

reliant on the iPhone line with 63% of the company’s last quarter

revenue stemming from smartphone sales. While this reliance

has not been an issue in the past, with the iPhone’s exponential

growth, signs of Apple’s marquee product’s demand declining

has caused some worry. For the first time in many years, 2015

iPhone sales may not be an increase from the sales in 2014. The

fact that Apple’s other products have failed to demonstrate

significant growth, as well, does not help the situation. With iPad

sales flat-lining, Apple Watch demand remaining stagnant, and

the risk of the company’s laptops and computers falling into

obscurity, Apple will need to pull some innovation out of their

sleeves if they want to remain the top tech giant in the world.

Before all of the beloved iPhone users (myself included) fall into

a state of depression, allow me to assure you that the possibility

of Apple self-destructing is extremely slim. The company’s

extensive financial resources and intellectual prowess are too

strong to let that happen. However, the company’s influence and

power may very well take a dip and stall the business’s

progression.

Now, if you’re wondering what a 16 year-old teenager,

with no formal business experience or education, thinks about

the issue, this next part is for you. I believe the most effective

way for Apple to resolve their dilemma is with a major

acquisition. Buying a company that is already financially sound

and poised for growth, allows Apple to expand their product line

-up in a safer and quicker manner. Technology companies like

Fitbit and GoPro would be ideal, given Apple’s current mobile-

based ecosystem, while others including Tesla Motors have

potential as well. (Source: CNNMoney)

Sankrant is a Hindu festival

that marks the beginning of

Spring in India. Despite the

event being a tradition through

out the nation, each Indian

region celebrates the festival

in its own unique way. In

Maharashtra, Sankranti is a three

day festival: the first day is

known as Bhogi, the second is

known as Sankrant, and finally

the third is known as Kinkrant.

The story behind this festival is

that Sankarasur Rakshasa started

killing people, and there was a

terrible need for a way stop him.

So, Goddess Sankranti came down

to Earth and killed him, effectively

ending his tirade. This holiday

celebrates the success of Goddess

Sankranti and the downfall of

Sankarasur Rakshasa.

HAPPY

SANKRANTI!

On this day, many women

get together to do Haldi Kunku,

and they exchange household gifts

such as utensils or clothes with

one another. Usually, women wear

black clothing or sarees on this

holiday. In Maharashtra, kids also

fly kites to celebrate Sankrant. A

popular food eaten on this holiday

is tilgul as foods made on this hol-

is also a time to honor Saraswati

is meant to mark a period of en-

Secret Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Files Made Public Soham Apte

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and his Indian National Army were pivotal factors in India’s fight for Independence. Netaji served as a role model for many young revolutionaries and is lauded even today for his charismatic and dynamic persona in pre-independence Indian politics. His sudden death in a flight to Taiwan led to the surfacing of various theories, many of which claiming he was still alive.

India’s new BJP Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, declassified 100 digital documents from the National Archives of India pertaining to Bose.

HISTORY

1. “I want to sleep” were Netaji Subhash Chandra

Bose's last words.

2. According to a Khosla Commission report, Bose

died at Tethoku Airfield, currently in Taiwan, on 18

August 1945.

3. On 20 August 1945, Netaji’s body was cremated

and his ashes were carried to Tokyo.

4. The British government did not really believe that

Bose was dead. Even for some months after the

Japanese announced Netaji’s death, the British

government continued to discuss ways of “dealing

with him.”

5. The Indian government was “not inclined to favor”

the bringing back of Netaji’s ashes kept in Renkoji

Temple, Tokyo “due to possible adverse reactions

from members of Netaji’s family, as well as certain

sections of the public, who refused to believe in his

death in the plane crash in August, 1945”.

6. The Indian embassy in Tokyo pointed out that

many temple authorities had a feeling that the

Indian government was “indifferent” to its national

hero who fought for the country’s independence.

7. According to a confidential report prepared by

the Home Ministry in 1977, the Indian Embassy was

paying the Temple authorities in Tokyo Rs 5000 per

year for the safekeeping of the freedom fighter’s

ashes.

8. The chief priest at the Temple sought some kind

of recognition in the form of a letter or a medal

from the Indian government for the trouble he took

to retain the ashes.

9. The Indian government paid Rs. 6000 per month

to Netaji’s daughter after his wife refused the offer.

The payment was discontinued in 1965 after her

marriage.

10. According to a letter written by Historian Peter

Simkins, Netaji's name was not in the British

Government’s list of war criminals, but he was

considered a traitor. (Source: Zee News India)

Movie

Critique:

Katyar

Kaljat

Ghusali

Yash Korde Above: A promotional picture for Katyar Kaljat Ghusali

The Marathi movie, Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, is a musical depicting the journey of three different singers who are all related in an interesting matter. The main plot of the film initially revolves around the competition between Pandit Shastri (Panditji), the royal singer of the court, and Khan Saheb, a fellow singer who envies Shastri talent and strives to become the royal singer of the court. The second half of the movie involves another competition between Khan Saheb and Sadashiv Gurav, Shastri’s disciple who wants to avenge the defeat of his master and become an accomplished singer himself. The picture displays the major themes of appearance versus reality, the creation of one’s ego and fear and the concept of learning from one’s enemy and although the film focuses on the life a classical Indian musician, the main themes are borrowed from the common day situations and other literary works, such as the struggle that one must take to gain and then keep power as well as the action of avenging a loss of a loved one. One key point that I particularly enjoyed was the hardship of an artist trying to improve and become better at a particular art. Seeing the hardships of Khan Saheb and Sadashiv, show the audience that

the only way to become successful at anything is to make sacrifices, and show dedication and passion. Some examples of this would be how Sadashiv ended becoming Khan Saheb’s servant just to learn music from him, and how Khan Saheb spent 14 years competing against Panditji just become the royal singer of the state. Overall, Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, tells an interesting story about the life of an Indian classical musician and the struggles they must face as well as showing multiple, deep and symbolic meanings. I would highly recommend this movie for anyone who is interested in visual arts or music, or has an interest in the historical fiction genre.

Beyoncé and Coldplay Spark

Controversy Jui Paithane

On January 29, 2016, Coldplay, an al-

ternative pop-rock band, released a music

video for their single, “Hymn For The Week-

end” featuring Beyoncé. Most of the video is

shot in or the set is created as if it was India.

Beyoncé and Coldplay are both dressed in

Desi attire throughout the music video, and

the video depicts Coldplay joining in on some Holi fun with local children. This video has

caused an uproar in a majority of the youth and young adults, due to the fact that some

people interpreted this to be a form of culture appropriation.

Culture appropriation is when members of one culture take up aspects of another

culture. This causes some controversy, because many times the aspects that are adopted

by these foreign cultures are pieces of the original culture that those native people were

shamed for. For example, racism and prejudice, even though still majorly prevalent today,

was a huge part of societies all over the world back in the 1900s, including the USA.

Many of the citizens who weren’t white males were harmed or separated from the rest of

the population. While the majority of the victims of this racial hate were African

Americans, other people of color were greatly affected as well. Aspects of cultures that

weren’t native to the US, like the wearing of a hijab or a bindi, caused a greater divide

between people of color and white Americans. Over time, as Americans became more

socially aware and race hate started to subside, many of the majority racial groups began

to adopt the very things that the people of color were segregated for. Many citizens

don’t understand the affects that this appropriation has on society, and aren’t educated

on the culture that they appropriate at all.

This controversy has received a lot of attention from social media as well. Vishakha

Mallya, owner of popular Twitter account Desi Girl Problems, has attracted a large

following in advocating for certain sides of many socio-cultural issues. Though a Beyoncé

fan herself, Mallya opposed the recent video, deeming it ‘cultural appropriation’. “I am a

strong believer that there is a thick line between cultural appropriation and appreciation.

Appreciation is when a member of a certain culture invites a member of a different

culture to participate in their culture. Yes Beyoncé was "invited” by the Indian director to

take part in the culture, but broadcasting a member of culture A partaking in culture B,

tells the world that anyone can take advantage of the culture. The video is essentially, un-

intentionally promoting cultural appropriation. In this case, because she is broadcasting it

to the world, quite literally because she is the biggest pop culture icon of our age, Be-

yoncé is promoting cultural appropriation,” writes Mallya.

Although the song has gained popularity, it is important that people understand

the implications of these artists’ actions. Promoting this video will only cause people to

believe that what they did was correct and should be emulated by the rest of society.

When in reality, society should be focused on reducing the amount of culture appropria-

tion and educating people on social matters and what they can do to help fix the prob-

lems we face today.

Solitude Among a Crisis

Neha Kulkarni

Though the 2016 campaign trail has only

recently gone underway, already, candidates

have been unraveling policies that leave the

nation reeling, cheering, and tweeting. One of

the most notable topics in the current election

is immigration reform, and whether it’s tactful

to allow Syrian refugees in the country.

The NY Times featured an editorial in late

November titled "They Are Us". Author,

Nicholas Kristof, expresses his outrage of many

American politicians’ reluctance to accept

desperate refugees who flee persecution and

war, questioning the connection between

Jewish immigrants who fled Nazi Germany in

the 1930s and the current Syrian refugees

fleeing political strife in their homeland. Kristoff

goes on to condemn those who show

opposition towards letting Syrian refugees in

the country, saying that the true problem lies in

lack of screening and gun control.

On the other side of the spectrum, many

conservatives believe that the best way to

protect America is to bar refugees, with only

rare exceptions. Many argue that due to the

political instability of Syria, it is difficult to

properly background check those coming into

our nation. When asked about the issue, GOP

frontrunner Donald Trump responded, “We

have no idea who these people are, we are the

worst when it comes to paperwork…This could

be one of the great Trojan horses…We cannot

let them into this country, period.”

The Syrian refugee crisis, for me, brings up a

deeper concept of the true place of an

immigrant in American society. A refugee

resembles not just an image of a battered,

desperate individual; rather, a refugee

resembles the assiduous Silicon Valley

entrepreneur, a college student, and other

innovators: the profundity of the American

dream. We must perceive these refugees as we

do Steve Jobs, Joseph Pulitzer, Walt Disney, and

countless others: those who inspired innovation

through ambition and perseverance because

they had opportunities, making Americans, then

and now, proud. No matter the consensus,

solidarity and compassion must be prioritized.

SpaceX:

Back Again Ojas Amberkar

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. (SOURCE)

Over the past 2 months, SpaceX, a widespread Space Exploration Company operated by Tesla CEO and widely-known entrepreneur Elon Musk, has been attempting earth-shattering missions. . Why are they so revolutionary? SpaceX is attempting the impossible: launching a rocket to the edge of the atmosphere, releasing satellites into orbit, and vertically landing the first stage of the rocket on the ground . This new system could cut the cost of a space launch by over 75% as it preserves many of the expensive components that would have otherwise would have simply crash-landed in the ocean.

Despite the near-impossible odds, SpaceX has successfully accomplished this feat. What’s more? I was there to watch it. As the countdown reached zero, the nine enormous thrusters fired to life, accelerating the rocket into the sky. After about three minutes, the first stage cut out and began to fall back to the Earth while the second stage continued its journey into space. After about ten minutes, the first stage spectacularly came down and settled down perfectly on the platform.

Suddenly, a frightening sonic boom emanated from the pad, which had many people thinking that it has exploded. Instead, the boom marked a successful landing and one of the largest steps for mankind in space exploration.

More recently, SpaceX attempted a second landing, this time on a barge out in the ocean. While the mission was a success, the rocket tipped over after it had landed as one of the landing struts had failed. SpaceX is the company to watch for the next few months for innovation. Who knows what kind of ground-breaking innovations they will make in space travel next?

Super Bowl 50:

The Breakdown Abhit Bhandare

Preview

On February 7th, 2016, football’s biggest stage will arrive at Santa Clara, California: The Super Bowl. This year, the game is set for the two number one seeds in their respective conferences, as the NFC’s Panthers, with Cam Newton and a high powered offense, take on the AFC’s Broncos led by Von Miller and a destructive defense for one thing: the Lombardi Trophy.

How They Match-Up

They say defense wins championships. Well, whichever team wins, it will be right: The Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers are No. 1 and No. 2 . Denver's defense may have single-handedly taken out Tom Brady, but they will surely need more help from their diminished offense against Carolina. When Peyton Manning was on the field during the regular season, the Broncos turned the ball over 18 times. That is bad news against a Panthers defense that forced a turnover on 20% of drives and allowed no more than 17 points in 8 of its games this season.

Predictions

If the Broncos cannot get their running game going early, they are going to have a very difficult time getting the ball down

the field. The passing game will slowed down drastically due to the shutdown corners of Carolina. Carolina Panthers are Super Bowl 50 Champions. Sorry, Broncos fans.

Ever since the Zika virus made its way to South America in 2015, the world has only grown more and more con-cerned about the virus. It was first discovered in 1947, in mon-keys located in the Zika forests of Uganda. Then, in the 1960s, the first human cases were de-tected in Nigeria. The virus then spread east to the Indian continent in the 1970s. In 2007, there was a epidemic in Micro-nesia, followed by an epidemic on French Polynesia in 2013, and finally reaching South America in 2015. Scientists’ first reaction to the virus was very mild; however, recent studies show that the virus can cause incomplete brain development and smaller heads in newborn babies. The CDC has issued a travel alert for people traveling to places in Central and South America, including Brazil, Co-lombia, and El Salvador. If you plan on visiting a country where viral transmission is ongoing, be sure to follow the appropriate travel procedures to prevent getting the virus. http://www.cdc.gov/zika/

North America (U.S.A.) It is a drug commonly used in hospitals as a stronger alterna-tive to morphine. Yet when used recreationally, just a few grams can kill you. The drug is said to be 50 times stronger than heroin. Nick-named the “drop dead” drug, fen-tanyl has taken the American streets by storm, again. It was orig-inally created, for recreational use, by armature chemist George Mar-quardt in the 90’s. Within a few years, over 250 deaths were record-ed, just in the northeastern area of the United States. The drug also made international appearances, being reported in places as far away as Australia. Although talk about the drug has declined throughout the years, its popularity has only increased. In 2015, nearly 280 people died in the New Hamp-shire area from fentanyl, or fentanyl-laced heroin. In January of 2016, over 1,800 bags of the drug were seized by local, state, and federal authorities.

Europe

Around the middle of 2012, refugees began pouring out of Syria into Europe, and sur-rounding countries seeking safety from the Syrian Civil War. Over the course of 3 years, over 6.6 million refugees have left Syr-ia. To get into Western Europe, the refugees travel by both land and sea. The immigrants travel through Turkey and the Eastern European countries, by the Strait of Gibraltar, and by the Mediter-ranean island of Malta. In the 2015, most European countries closed their Schengen, or free border, to prevent illegal immi-grants from entering their coun-try. Recently however, the Euro-pean Union has approved 3 bil-lion euros in funding to help Turkey accommodate for the refugees. Regarding the 5 year long Syrian Civil War, the United Nations has temporarily suspended.

In 1999, everything seemed perfect for the residents of Sydney, Australia. The Olympic Games were right around the corner, and Sydney was on its way to becoming an international city as the new millennium approached. Yet, in recent years, nothing has looked good for the lone continent. The once great city has reported that foot traffic in some places has decreased by up to 80%. While famous street shops close down left and right (literally) due to decreased takings/income, the night life has almost completely disappeared. Whether the decreased foot traffic caused the closing down of businesses, or vice verse, it is clear that today’s Sydney is just a hollow fragment of the 20th century Sydney.

According to South Korea’s defense ministry and Japanese media, it seems that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is preparing to launch long-range missiles.
