Term 2 Week 6 | 7 June 2017
Tena koutou e te whanau, he mihi nui kia koutou katoa Kia ora, Talofa lava and Bonjour. Welcome to week 6 of term 2
Jonathan’s note
Talofa lava and welcome to week six…. half way through Term 2. What a spectacular week last week with our celebrations of Samoan language week. A special thank you to the teachers of Mua I Malae for their support in making the week one to remember for us all. It was great to see the Samoa independence day celebrations on Thursday and all of our children making the day special with their performances. On the same day we had the Inter-School Cross Country at Grey Lynn Park, which many of our children participated in. Please see later in this newsletter for details.
Thanks to those who have paid the school donation. Here is the IRD link that provides you with details about how to claim back a portion of the ‘donation’ from IRD. This can also be done for past years…. https://goo.gl/YuFqLt
We continue to have a huge amount of sickness going through our school population the last few weeks. We have had a vomiting bug and also a number of cases of Strep Throat: https://goo.gl/RcmbbE
We have our third whole school assembly this week at 9:10am. This week Katie’s Homegroup will host the assembly. We encourage you to join us if you can.

COMMUNITY MATARIKI CELEBRATION
Monday 3rd July 7:00 to 8:30am
Kia ora Talofa lava Bonjour
Coming up on Monday July 3rd is our annual Matariki Celebration. This year we will be gathering on the bottom courts from 7:00am in time for sunrise at 7:30. We will start with a Karakia and signing. Then look for the Matariki star cluster. Kai will be shared in the hall from 7:45. This will be provided and you are also welcome to contribute. As this is a community event all are welcome. Mai katoa. Matariki, as well as welcoming the New Year, has been a time to acknowledge Tupuna, the ancestors who have gone before us. Some Māori did this by flying kites as it was a way of connecting with the spiritual world. Some kites were enormous and very beautiful like the one shown below. During the rest of the day tamariki across all of our rōpu will be involved in learning activities that have a Matariki focus. These learning activities will include making Matariki kites, korowai (Māori cloaks) and Matariki stories. You are welcome to join the classes during the day. This may be for 20 minutes or 2 hours. We are flexible. Follow this link to learn more about Matariki. https://nzhistory.govt.nz/classroom/matariki-maori-new-year
The link below is an invitation to this event. Please indicate your intention to participate and numbers attending. Mai katoa (all welcome). https://goo.gl/forms/k0qYRGUEIRIbFoFh1

SCHOOL PRODUCTION - SAFARI
LEWIS EADY OPEN CLASSES
Lewis Eady invites you to attend your child's music lesson at school on Monday June 12.
This is the perfect opportunity to observe your child's lesson in progress and to meet their music teacher.
Parent observations will take place during your child's usual lesson time. On the day, please come to the office to sign up beforehand.
REMINDERS
LUNCH ORDERS
If you want to order a lunch for your child on the day, the school has teamed up with 2 restaurants in Ponsonby/Grey Lynn: Subway Ponsonby and Pane & Vino.
You can order Subway:
- Everyday at school by dropping your Subway envelope before 9am on the day.
Please just make sure that the envelope has: the child's name, the correct room number, the money (Subway give back the change if need be) and the detail of the order. Subway has been notified that we are going water only, so any drink ordered will be automatically swapped by a bottle of water.
- Through YQ. This service is available everyday, but you need to order before 9.30am on the day.
You can access the website here www.yq.co.nz or download the mobile app.
Lunches from Pane & Vino can now be ordered everyday through our school online shop.
WATER ONLY
From the start of this term we have been a ‘water only school’. School staff will be reminding children of this and will also remove drinks other than water from children. They will be asked to take it home and not to bring it back.
SCHOOL DONATIONS
• $300 a year for the 1st child (or $75 a term) • $200 a year for the 2nd child (or $50 a term) • $150 a year for the 3rd child (or $37.5 a term) You can pay at the office during office hours, on our online shop at his link (https://goo.gl/By6xoT) or through online banking at the following account: Richmond Road School 12-3011-0757539-00.

Please note that the stationery should not be labelled or named. We would like to do this as a class.
LATENESS, ABSENCE AND APPOINTMENTS
If your child happens to be late, please sign in (or remind him/her to sign in) at the office first and then your child will be given a late pass for the teacher’s attention. Otherwise you will get an absence notification.
If you take your children out before the end of the day, please come to the office first where you can sign your child out and be given a sign out pass for the teacher’s attention.
