BRUN, ROMAN DIARY(BRUN95 TWO-VOLUME INDEX)

This index to FriederikeBrun's diary of her Italianexperiences in the years 1795and 1796 offers severalunusual features which wereadopted on a trial basis inthe hope of enhancing theusefulness of the Englishtranslation.

First, it covers both ofBrun's original volumes, whichare here referred torespectively by theabbreviations D1 and D2 (forDiary volumes 1 and 2).

Second, the index wasdesigned to follow a simple, uniform method of designatingstreets, sguares, churches, palaces and other sites ofhistorical and/or touristicinterest. This, it was hoped, could be accomplished bylisting in order, first, thecategory to which the sitebelongs (street, sguare, church, palace, museum, bridge, villa, etc.), followed by theofficial or distinctive name bywhich that particular site iscommonly known(usually a personal name inItalian or Latin), with simplecross references to sites thatare better known to Englishspeakers under some other name.Although this system has proveddifficult to applyconsistently, the reader willfind in most instances thatboth Roman temples andChristian churches are listedunder the names of the

associated pagan deities orCatholic saints, the word"Saint" being treated as anintegral part of the name.

Third, the spelling ofall personal and geographicnames, still somewhat variablein Friederike Brun's time, hasbeen standardized to somedegree in the text and morefully in the index, wherestandard contemporaryorthography is used in mostinstances.

Fourth, page referencesin this index follow the pagenumbers of the original Germanedition, in which numberedpages are approximately threetimes as numerous as in theEnglish translation, where theGerman page numbers areplainly repeated at theappropriate points in theEnglish text. This form ofcitation permits more precisereference to the originalsubject matter and woulddoubtless be retained in anyfuture reprintings of theEnglish text.

Fifth, some but by nomeans all individuals, monuments, and historic placeshave been identified wheresuch identification is notreadily available in standardreference works.

While aware of its manytechnical flaws, the compileris confident that the indexwill provide real assistanceto future users.
