National Night Out a Success in Rice Military
by Phyllis Thomason
The evening could not
have been more perfect! Great
cool fall weather, sunny skies, and Nellie Keyes Park full of
families who came out to meet
their neighbors and enjoy the
generosity of our local
businesses. Great food was
served up by many of our
neighborhood restaurants as
well as gift certificates from
others. Pony rides, face
painting, and the bouncy house
were provided by still another
group of businesses. Many of
those business owners were on
hand to meet us and welcome us
to their locations. And because National
Night Out is all about creating a
secure sense among neighbors,
we met our local neighborhood
police officers, the Houston
Mounted Patrol, and the

Queen of Green: Holiday Recycling
by Laury Adams
As we entertain family andfriends and receive hundreds of advertising materials in thecoming weeks, there’s no doubtour green tubs will be brimmingwith plastic, metal, andnewspapers. But when holidaygifts replace electronic equipmentand household items, we may look at the old product and ask, “What
should we do with this?”
Hopefully, we will be overcomewith guilt before tossing it in thegarbage.
Junk waste (furnitureitems, appliances, and other bulkymaterial) can be placed at curbsideon designated Mondays inFebruary, April, June, August,October, and December. To findyour scheduled Monday of themonth, go to the map for our zipcode at www.HoustonTx.gov/solidwaste.
It’s easy to discard
electronic equipment and smallappliances at the drive-through
recycling center at 5900 Westpaon the north side of street just wof Chimney Rock.
Recycle Some #6 Plastics in Neighborhood! The #6 placontainers from flowers alandscape plants should not recycled with other plastics. not throw them in the garbaThe pots and plastic trays canused by the Wabash Feed StoreWashington Avenue. Drop th

Holiday Safety Advice for Canine Friends
by Annie
Hi, I’m Annie. I am back againwith some advice for the
upcoming Holidays.
Holiday Food
Holiday foods can be aproblem for your pet. Rich, fattyfoods, like gravy or grease, cancause problems ranging fromstomach upsets to pancreatitis, which is an inflammation of thepancreas resulting in pain, vomiting, and dehydration. It
could land us in the hospital!Alcohol can cause serious
intoxications in pets, and manydogs are attracted to it. Every yearhundreds of dogs die after a single
bout of alcohol consumption.Clean up glasses after holidayparties. We are attracted by thesweet taste of drinks, especiallyeggnog.
Chocolate, coffee, and tea
all contain dangerous componentswhich cause nervous system orurinary system damage and heartmuscle stimulation. Chocolate isespecially a problem because wedogs love its flavor. Problems fromingestion range from diarrhea to
seizures and death. Unsweetened baking chocolate and dark chocolate are the worst culprits, but all chocolate, fudge, and othercandy should be placed out of our
reach. Be careful of all unwatchedfood products. Uncooked yeastdough can expand and producegas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible ruptureof the stomach or intestines. Grapes and raisins contain anunknown toxin, which candamage the kidneys. We dogshave an exceptional sense of smell
– juices on plastic or aluminumfoil left on countertops are verytempting. If ingested, plastic orfoil wrap (cellophane candywrappers or food wrap) can causechoking or intestinal obstruction.Meat-soaked strings from rumproasts are also enticing. Ingestion
can cause a surgical emergencalled a ‘linear string fore body’ in the intestines. To be safe, put away fo
immediately, and pet-proof ygarbage. Feed your pet(s) beforparty so they will not be so apt beg or steal food.
Poisonous Plants Many of the plants yhave in your homes during holidays can be poisonous to pets. If ingested, holly (leaves a berries) causes stomach upset a
can be potentially fatal to bdogs and cats. Mistletoe upsstomachs and can cause hecollapse. Poinsettias have irritating sap that can ca blistering in the mouth stomach upset. So when y brighten up your home, pthese plants well out of our reor use imitation holiday plants.

decorations can create hazards forus pets.
Place Christmas trees in astable stand, and attach the treesecurely to a window or wall withsomething like fish line. To keepour cat friends away from the tree,
it may help to use a Scat Mat. Forus dogs, use an indoor exercisepen to provide a safe place insideduring the holidays, or put thepen around the tree! Tree needlescan be toxic and cause mouth andstomach irritation. Even needlesand the wire of artificial treescould pose a problem. Be sure weare not chewing on branches oreating fallen needles. Chewing on
electrical cords, including cords of lights can cause problems rangingfrom burned mouths to electricalshock and even death byelectrocution. Use pet-proof
extension cords, and spray cordswith a product such as BitterApple or Chew Stop. Christmas decorations can be a problem. Dogs will oftenplay with glass ornaments as if they were balls and serious oral
lacerations can result. Sharpornament hooks can also becomeimbedded in your pet's mouth oresophagus. Decorating trees withfood is asking for problems.Candy canes and gingerbreadpeople can be as enticing to usdogs. Because tree preservativesare often sugar-based (andinviting to dogs) and because the
water stands so long, the water inthe tree stand often harborspotentially harmful bacteria.Fertilizers, insecticides, or flameretardants that were used on the
tree may also get into the waCover the stand with a tree skiruse other means to prevent accto the water.
Pet Gifts and Treats When choosing a holid
gift for your special friend, be sit is safe – no small pieces tcould come off and be swallowChoose healthy holiday treats your dog and give them moderation. With all of the festivitdo not forget to relax and spesome quality time with us! think that is the best gift of all away!

A Look Back at Halloween in Nellie Keyes Park
by Phyllis Thomason
The youngest residents of
Rice Military had an incredible
afternoon to romp in Nellie
Keyes Park. Dressed as lions,
tigers, fairy princesses,
ladybugs, elephants, Buzz Light-
years, and cowboys, they came
to play games, make crafts,
decorate mini pumpkins, jump
in the bounce castle, and collect
candy.
We thank all of thefamilies who volunteered their
time and effort to make this
Second Annual Halloween
Festival a great success. Festive
orange balloons were filled and
given to all by Dora de los
Santos. The Anderson and Shore
families setup the crafts table
and assisted each little goblin in
making finger puppets and
pumpkin crafts. The Pumpkin
Roll, supervised by Angelica
Young, was enjoyed by parents
and kids alike!
Jo Wiginton was back
again this year with her Catch-A-Spider game. Mini pumpkins
were turned into masterpieces
by our young RM residents.

Design Tip: Living Large in Small Spaces
by Pamela O’Brien
By simply using the right
pieces in our homes and offices,
we can often make a small spacefeel much larger. Try these
ideas:
Add height to a room
with tall, stately pieces of
furniture to raise the eye. You
can also use a tall floor lamp
like a torchiere, or even a
sculpture. Hang art a bit higher
in a small room.
When purchasing
furniture, opt for the rounded
look instead of squared-off pieces; the softer corners lend
themselves better to flowing
easily from one space to
another.
Though the furniture
should feel light, don’t confuse
or clutter the area with a leggy
look. Too much furniture on
legs will look busy. And do
forget about the tables:
cocktail table with a sturdy b
is more family-friendly.
Pull a color or two frroom to room with pa
window treatments, accessor
or rugs to keep your e
moving.

Farmers’ Market Fun
by Eileen Sims
I recently discovered the
world of farmers’ markets inHouston, and I am a fan!Houston hosts dozens of local
farmers’ markets across the city
each week. I visited the
Saturday morning Urban
Harvest - Eastside Market
(open 8 a.m. to noon), located
just off Richmond between
Kirby and Buffalo Speedway. It
was a crisp, clear, beautifulmorning; I was not sure what to
expect, but as I approached themarket, I was pleasantly
surprised by all of the sights,
sounds and smells. Although
the market is not big, I was
amazed at the variety of
products. There were dozens of
vendors selling everythingfrom organic vegetables,
seafood, and grass-fed meats to
homemade Indian chutneys
and curries. I sampled
delicious local goat cheese,
honey, gourmet tamales, and
Texas olive oil. I could notresist bringing home some of the beautiful bouquets of
brightly colored flowers, and
they lasted over a week! There
was even an onsite knife
sharpening service, so you can
have your knives sharpened
while you shop. Local farmers’ markets
are not only a fantastic resourcefor fresh produce, seafood, and
meats, but it also is a wonderfulopportunity for urban residents
to support local farms, with
both immediate and long term
benefits for all. There is no
doubt that locally-grown farm
products are fresh, tasty and
healthy, but local farmersmarkets also promote a great
sense of community, not to
mention the fact they are a lot
of fun! The day I attended
Eastside Market there was l
music and the Fusion T
Truck was there dishing made to order breakfast tausing the fresh farmers’ mar
ingredients. I encoura
everyone to get out there a
