Whatisthebestexperientialoptionforyourorganization?

ExperientialLearningprovidesstudentswithdirectexperiencethroughwhichtheycanuseanalyticalskillsandreflectiontoapplynewideasgainedfromtheexperiencetotheirclassroomlearning.Experientiallearningincludesinternships,servicelearning,andvariouspracticumopportunities.Determinewhatthebestfitfortheorganizationisbyconsideringthefollowingdefinitions:

Volunteerisapersonwhoperformsaservicewillingly,withoutpayorcreditinordertosupportacause.

ServiceLearningiscurriculum‐basedemphasizinghands‐onlearningwhileaddressingrealworldconcerns.Theserviceexperienceprovidesacontextfortranslatingdisciplinebasedtheoriesintopractice.

CivicEngagementoffersabroadconceptofcommunityinvolvementandawarenessthatcanincludeservice,advocacy,servicelearning,volunteerismandpoliticalparticipation,withthegoalofhelpingtodevelopcommunitybasedknowledge,valuesandskills.

Capstone/ProjectBasedLearningcourseistheculminationoflearninginthemajor.Astudentgenerallyworksonasinglelargeproject‐‐suchasathesispaperorlargeresearchproject‐‐fortheentiresemester.

Externships(JobShadow)provideaninitialexposuretoacareerforabriefperiodoftime(suchasonedayaweekoracouplehoursperweek)byhavingstudents“shadow”anexperiencedemployeeorprofessional.Externshipsmayincludeacademiccreditwhenconnectedtoacourse.

InternshipsaredefinedbytheNationalAssociationofCollegesandEmployers(NACE)as:“aformofexperientiallearningthatintegratesknowledgeandtheorylearnedintheclassroomwithpracticalapplicationandskillsdevelopmentinaprofessionalsetting.Internshipsgivestudentstheopportunitytogainvaluableappliedexperienceandmakeconnectionsinprofessionalfieldstheyareconsideringforcareerpaths;andgiveemployerstheopportunitytoguideandevaluatetalent.”Inaddition,aninternshipisasemester(fall,spring,summer)induration,mayormaynotcarrycredit,maybepaidorunpaidbasedontheDepartmentofLaborcriteria(SeePage8forDOLRequirements).

AStudentEmployeeisapersonwhoishiredtoprovideservicestoanorganizationonaregularbasisinexchangeforcompensation,notforacademiccredit.Thisisappropriatewhenyoudon’tmeetDepartmentofLabor6Prongtest.(SeePage8)

AcloserlookataVolunteerAVolunteermightbethebestfitforyourorganizationifyouarelookingforonetimeassistanceataneventorprogramorifyouneed3‐12hoursperweekofservice.UnlikeanInternship,thefocusofavolunteerpositionisprimarilyontheservicebeingcompletedandtheindividualorissuereceivingthatservice.Aninternshipwillprimarilyfocusonthelearningexperienceofthestudentandthebenefitstotheorganization/employeraresecondary.ServiceLearningisabalancebetweenthetwowithequalfocusonlearning,serviceandbenefitstorecipientsandproviders.

FindingtherightinternforyourorganizationHighSchool:HighSchoolstudentsareinterestedindevelopinginterpersonalandprofessionalskills.Theseskillswillallowthemtodiscoverwhatareastheyexcelin,andtheycouldpotentiallyremainwiththeorganizationthroughcollege.Thisexperiencecanalsoincreasethestudentsdesiretograduateandpursuehighereducationinthefuture.Undergraduate:Anundergraduateinterncouldbebeneficialforyourorganizationbecauseoftheirexperienceinandoutoftheclassroom.Theyhaveanopportunitytoapplythingsthey’velearnedintheirundergraduatecurriculumsintotheworkplace.Manystudentsparticipateininternshipstoexplorecareernichesandtodeveloptheirprofessionalskills.Ideallyaninternshipforacollegestudentisanopportunitytonetwork,enhanceindustryrelatedandsoftskills,leadingfromeducationtoemployment.Graduate:Sincethesestudentshaveearnedanundergraduatedegreeandareinterestedinadvancingresearchandprofessionalskillsrelevanttotheircareerniche.CareerChanger:Bytransitioningtoanewindustrytheyarehopingtoexpandaprofessionalnetworkinthisnewfieldandincorporatetheirprofessionalskillsintoyourorganization.International:Thesearetypicallyundergraduateorgraduatestudents.Thereisnoexcessivepaperworkneededtohireaninternationalintern.Internationalstudentsdonotneedagreencardtointern.EligiblestudentswhomaintainanF‐1orJ‐1visastatusarepermittedtointernintheirmajorfieldofstudybyfederalregulationwithpermissionfromtheirrepresentativeOfficeofInternationalStudentsandScholars.Thesestudentsbenefitorganizationsbecauseoftheirlanguageadvantageandtheirwillingnesstoadapttoadifferentenvironment.TheapplicationprocessforInternationalinternsincludes:

1. Thestudent’sacademicadvisororDean/ChairmanofthedepartmentmustcompletetheCurricularPracticaTrainingForm(F‐1)orAcademicTrainingCertificationForm(J‐1).

2. Provideanoriginaljobofferletteroncompanyletterheadthatincludesthefollowinginformation(nofaxesore‐mailswillbeaccepted):

a. Nameofcompanyb. Locationofcurricularpracticaltrainingoracademictrainingc. Salaryinformation(optional)d. Numberofhoursperweek(nottoexceed20hoursduringwhileschoolisinsession)e. Beginningandendingdatesofthetraining

3. StudentmustsubmitalloftheabovedocumentsforapprovaltotheOfficeofInternationalStudentsandScholars(OISS).

MakinganInternshipOfferWhenyoufeelyouhavefoundthecandidatewiththeappropriateexperience,professionalism,maturityandwhoisamutuallybeneficialfitfortheorganization,makeanoffer.Justasinapermanentfull‐timejobsearch,studentsmaybeapplyingandinterviewingforinternshipswithmultipleorganizations.Thus,itisbesttomakeanofferassoonasadecisionhasbeenmade.Atthistime,aworkscheduleshouldbeset,compensationagreedupon,andappropriatepaperworkcompletedforhumanresourcesneedandthestudent’sinternshiprequirements.Upontheacceptanceoftheoffer,removeyourinternshipfromallplaceswhereitisposted(e.g.,college/universitywebsites)topreventfurtherapplications.

HowdostudentinternsbenefitfromanInternshipProgram?Studentsareseekingopportunitiesthatstimulatetheirinterestsandprovidereal‐worldexperiences.Ameaningful,purposefulinternshipprogramwill:

Ensuretheassignmentofchallengingprojectsandtasks. Provideprojectsthatcomplementacademicprogramsand/orcareerinterests. Givebroadexposuretotheorganization(remember:thisisachanceforthemtopersonally

developandexplorecareerpossibilities). Provideadequate,reliable,andregularsupervisionandmentoring. Ensureinternsarekeepingpaceandaccomplishinggoals. Orientation. Createaprofessionalnetwork. Industryrelevance. Reallifeexperience. Enabletheinterntoestablishaprofessionnetwork.

LearningGoalsAtthestartoftheinternshipitisrecommendedthatthesupervisorandinterncreatealistoflearninggoalstheinternhopestocomplete.Thelearninggoalsserveastheacademicandprofessionalroadmapfortheintern’ssemester/timewithyourorganization.Thisactivityhelpstoclearlyidentifytheintern’slearningobjectivesandhowtheinternplanstoaccomplishthem.Creatingthesegoalsisalsoanopportunetimetodiscussworkplacerequirements,internresponsibilities,andhoursexpectedtocomplete(toearncredit).Weaskoursupervisorstotakethetimetomeetwiththeinternsduringthefirstweekoftheinternshiptodiscussandnegotiatelearninggoals.(Seeendofdocumentforsamplelearninggoals).

ProvidinganInternOrientationtoyourOrganizationItisveryimportantthatinternsbewarmlywelcomedandintroducedthroughoutyourorganization,justasyouwouldwelcomeanewfull‐timeemployee.Notonlyareinternsnewtoyourorganization,inmanycases,theyarenewtotheprofessionalworldofwork.Ifaffiliatedwithaschool:Manystudentsareunfamiliarwiththeactivities,environmentandobjectivesofyourorganization.Eventhoughyourinternsmayhaveworkedpart‐timetosupporttheireducation,theseexperiencesmaynothaveexposedthemtoorganizationalpolitics,theneedforconfidentiality,theimportanceofteamwork,ortheprofit‐makingnatureofbusiness.Itisduringtheorientationandtrainingthattheseissuesandinformationabouttheorganizationareaddressed.Thesooneryourinternunderstandsyourorganizationandhowitoperates,thesoonerheorshecanassumeassignedresponsibilitiesandcontribute.Expectationscanvarybasedonthesizeofyourorganization,butingeneral,besuretoreview:

thisinternship(s)encompassonemajorproject,orentailavarietyofsmallprojects?

Whatarethetoolsandworkspacenecessarytoprovidethestudent? Whattalents,academicbackgroundandexperiencedoyouwantinan

intern?Decideonqualificationsearlyontohelpyouselectthebestcandidate.

Whowillbeprimarilyresponsiblefortheintern(s)?Willthatpersonbeamentor,supervisor,orboth?

LearnaboutprospectiveInterns:Whetherahighschoolstudent,collegestudentoradultlearner,wewanttodevelopskills.Thebestwaytoknowwhatskillsaninternishopingtogainistointerview.Itisimportantthatemployersrealizethatschoolandclassesmustremainatoppriorityforinternsiftheyareacurrentstudent.Theinternshippositionshouldenhancetheirlearningexperience.Understandthatformostinternsthisisanewexperienceandtheymayneedsupportinbalancingtheirschoolworkandinternship.Agreeingonasetnumberofhoursinternswillworkeachweekandofferingflex‐timeforfreedomtoplantheirschedulesonaweeklybasisaretwowaystosupportbalance.Requiredhours/creditmayvarybyschoolbutmostinternstypicallycomplete10‐20hoursperweek.Thestudentinternshouldmeetwithanacademicorinternshipadvisorforfurtherdirection.RoleofanInternshipSupervisorandMentorIt’sgoingtobeimportanttoidentifyasupervisorforyourintern(s)whowillfamiliarizethemwiththeorganization,provideassignmentsandserveasa“contact”personforquestions.It’srecommendedthattheinternsupervisorbeanexpertinthetypeofworktheintern(s)willbeperformingtoprovidetheappropriateguidancefortheintern’sassignments.Aninternsupervisor’sresponsibilitieswillinclude:

UnpaidasDefinedbytheDepartmentofLaborIfyouaredecidingbetweenpaidandunpaidinternships,itisimportanttoknowiftheU.S.FairLaborStandardsActappliestoyourorganization.TheU.S.FairLaborStandardsActrestrictsemployer’suseofunpaidinterns.ThisActappliestobusinessesthathavetwoormoreemployeesdirectlyengagedininterstatecommerceaswellasannualsalesof$500,000ormore.Internswhoqualifyastraineesdonothavetobepaid.Ifyoufindyoucannotpayyourintern,youmustmeetthesesixcriteriafordeterminingtraineestatus(asdeterminedbytheU.S.DepartmentofLabor):1.Theinternship,eventhoughitincludesactualoperationofthefacilitiesoftheemployer,issimilartotraining,whichwouldbegiveninaneducationalenvironment;2.Theinternshipexperienceisforthebenefitoftheintern;3.Theinterndoesnotdisplaceregularemployees,butworksunderclosesupervisionofexistingstaff;4.Theemployerthatprovidesthetrainingderivesnoimmediateadvantagefromtheactivitiesoftheinternandonoccasionitsoperationsmayactuallybeimpeded;5.Theinternisnotnecessarilyentitledtoajobattheconclusionoftheinternship;and6.Theemployerandtheinternunderstandthattheinternisnotentitledtowagesforthetimespentintheinternship.

LoanForgivenessforInternshipsRhodeIslandStudentLoanAuthority(RISLA)haslaunchedarewardsprogramtoencouragecollegestudentstopursueinternshipsandhelpoffsetthefeethatsomestudentsmayincurtoobtaincreditforinternships.Loanforgivenesswillbeawardedtoqualifyingborrowersonanynon‐federalloanheldbyRISLA.TobeeligiblethestudentmustattendaRIinstitutionofhighereducation,orbeaRIresidentandtheymusthaveanon‐federalloanwithRISLA.Internshiprequirementsinclude:

InternshipmustbeafterMay1,2013 InternshipmustbelocatedinRhodeIslandorout‐of‐state PaidorUnpaid Internshipmustbe3‐creditsandontranscript,validatedbyaninstitutionofhighereducation Studentgraduatesfromtheirdegree/certificateprogram
