LIONS DEN

We had a tremendous turnout for our March Breakfast. Beautiful day apparently brought out many people and they were welcome after a quiet winter. Not so quiet was the excitement of the monthly raffle with Nathan Bremer, Dave Reusser and Mike St Onge all winning $50 and Darrel Belleau winning the 50-50.

Also had a large turnout at the Presbyterian (had to use spell check on that one) Church soup kitchen, earlier this month, where the Lions provided the meal. Many of the people come to stretch their food budget, some to socialize and some because it may be the only meal they may have that day. If you have a group that might want to participate in this program, contact the church. We have to thank the Lioness Club for helping out.

Our fishing tournament is scheduled for June 12*. Plans are still underway and we will let you know if there are any changes. This is a large fund raiser for us and is enjoyed by many fishermen and women.

If you are new to the Island or not new but have time on your hands consider joining the Lions. Stop by at one of our meetings on the 2""^ Thursday of each month at 5:30. hi the summer our location and time vary so contact any Lion to verify where we will be at.

Not wondering where he will be at on April 15* is Lion Jim Gort who will be celebrating his birthday. Always easy to remember his birthday as it is on income tax day. Best wishes to you Jim.

FIRE PLUGS

Hopefully when you read this the snow will be gone. If not it will eventually go and we will have to be concerned about wild land fires. Once the snow cover is gone you will need to check to see if burning is allowed before burning grass or yard waste. You can do this by calling 1-866-922-2876 or you can check on Hne at www.michigan.gov/bumpermit. Either of these will tell you if the DNR is allowing burning in our area. One of the considerations is what the weather will be during the day so even if it calm when you call it may be getting windy latter. When burning, after checking with the DNR, have a rake and shovel handy and a water source even if only a bucket. Also never leave a fire unattended and if it does seem to be getting away on you call 911 as soon as possible.

Our Fire Chief, Dave Pine apparently thought we needed to work out our winter kinks so he had us crawling around practicing search and rescue in fiill gear. Afterwards it makes you understand why the fire chief isn't an elected position. You also realize that you are not in near as good shape as you pretend to be. Without the excitement of a fire, crawling around on a cement floor is just plain hard.

Hope everyone has a nice spring and remember that if you clean your chimney now it should be ready to go next fall.

The Little Rapids Restoration Project

Spring has spnmg! While mother nature is still throwing us a few curve balls, the mild winter seems to be winding down and we have started to see signs that an early spring may be here soon! An early spring is a benefit for the Little Rapids Restoration Project. Over the last couple months, the design/builder has continued to work on the design of the project, permitting, and utility coordination. They have also brought a few pieces of equipment to the island and have been working on securing material for the project. As has been consistent throughout the project, design meetings continue to occur for open communication. Currently, the final road plans are being reviewed and it is anticipated that 70% bridge plans will be submitted within the next couple weeks. With the potential of an early spring, it is anticipated that construction will start in early May. Residents may start to see activity arotmd the site during the month of April. We are also looking to hold a public kick-off meeting for the project in May. Details on the kick-off meeting will be dispersed to the public as the date, time and location are finalized.

• Sugar Island Township News It's been a very busy month for Sugar Island Township and the Winter/Spring weather just can't make up its mind what to do... We had the March 8 Presidential Primary with a great turnout of 258 registered island voters. The monthly township meeting was moved to the next night. Carmine Bonacci, who is running for the Cloverland Electric Board of Directors and John Sawruk, current board member explained the workings of the Cloverland Electric Co-op Board of Directors. They encouraged all residents to please fill out your ballot and mail it back in. Mr. Rick Roy was appointed as an alternate for the Sugar Island Township Board of Review, At tiie 2016-2017 Budget meeting, a new township budget was presented and many questions were answered for the attendees, following it was the State of the Township meeting. Supervisor McKerchie noted that there will be two road improvements for next year: South Westshore will get ditching and a sand and gravel lift, and a portion of Townhall Road will get the same. These will be scheduled for late summer or early fall according to the Chippewa County Road Commission. The budget for the Fiscal year 2016-2017 was approved. We will have three more elections this coming year: May 3* - Special Election, August 2"**- State Primary and November 11*" State General - Presidential Election. Please exercise your right to vote. We look forward in the coming months to seeing our many Island "Snowbirds" and we wish them safe travel back to our beautiful Island.

Aaniin Sugar Island Sault Tribe Members!

1 am honored to serve as your Unit 1 Director, and I thanis. you all for the trust that you have placed in me. The past four years were spent working hard, helping to provide for our way of life and the welfare and prosperity of our people. As a Board, we faced many challenges against our right to self-government, and the protection of our property and resources. But among all the meetings, the voting, the politics and the fighting, I sadly realized that too much of our time is spent focused on dollars and political games... not on our People. I chose to do more.

I have found great joy in the direct help that I have been able to give to our People, no matter where they live! I have helped our members with food, housing, and medicine. I have helped parents with problems at schools, aided women and children who are victims of

Domestic Violence, people suffering from Substance Abuse, and in many other ways as well. Helping our People is the reason I asked for your vote four years ago, and I hope it will be the reason you give me your support once again. Though much of my work is in political arenas, 1 am not a politician. I am a Tribal Leader. I do not tell our people what they want to hear, I tell them what they MUST know.

I am an Eagle Clan woman, firmly rooted in the culture and traditions of our Anishinaabe people and / am Focused on Our People.

ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION OPENS IN ALBERTA HOUSE

Artist's Choice IV, the annual juried exhibition of the Olive Craig Gallery, will fill both Alberta House galleries during April, opening Friday, April 1st and closing April 30. The multi-media exhibit showcases the work of Michigan artists from the Indiana border to Hancock as well as work by Algoma artists. Viewers will find paintings by Beverley Benne, Phyllis Dorman, Judy Henderson, Sue Johnson, Ken Miller, Hilkka Pellikka, and Rita Varty, all of whom are Alberta House juried show veterans. Painters new to the show, but not to Alberta House are Doug Chambers and Anne Murphy Schaaf, with paintings and veteran juried show exhibitor Otto Ba-con with iron work. Norrls Seward is in with photographs, Ginny Johnson with porcelain bowls and Paulette Attie with a hooked rug.

One of the special pleasures of a juried show is the new artists it brings in—new not in the sense of inexperienced, but new to Alberta House. This show includes paintings by Laura Gaunt of Cedarville and Andreaka Jump and Linda Pearl of the Sault; photographs by Brian Hunt and Scott Laursen, needle felting by Mary Baron and Jennifer Kenney; alcohol ink work by Diane Krips-Mays and ceramics by Sandra Norris Palmore.

The public is cordially invited to attend the show's reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, April 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. To be awarded is the three hundred dollar First Place Award, the two hundred dollar Second Place Award and the one hundred dollars Third Place Award, as well as Purchase Awards by Central Savings Bank, Pam and Kevin Cooper and War Memorial Hospital. The judge for Artist's Choice IV is Jasmina Jovanovic, Director of the Art Gallery of Algoma.

More information and show photographs can be found in the April Alberta House News, downloadable on the Sault Area Arts Council website (www.saultarts.org). Regular hours in Alberta House are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alberta House is located just a quarter block south of Portage and the Soo Locks, at 217 Ferris Street in Sault, Ml. Admission is free of charge.
