BIM – Bygningsinformasjonsmodell

A BIM is a repository for digital, three-dimensional information and data generated by the design process and simulations —it’s the design, fabrication information, erection instructions, and project management logistics in one shared database. The BIM will exist for the life of a building and can be used to manage the client’s asset.

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the term applied to the creation and use of coordinated, consistent, computable information about a building project in design, in construction and in building operation and management. BIM is sometimes referred to as a ‘Virtual Building’ since it can be used to simulate the real building.

BIM is also defined as the collection of objects that describe abuilding.

The original name for IFCs is Industry Foundation Classes. IFC focuses on providing an open, industry-wide definition of data structures to capture and exchange information.

The development, maintenance, implementation and use of IFC and IFC enabled products is part of the buildingSMART initiative of the International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI).

The term buildingSMART is used to mean ‘integrated project working and value-based life cycle management using Building Information Modelling and IFC.

The purpose of IFC within buildingSMART is "enabling interoperability between AEC/FM software applications".

IDM

IDM is the Information Delivery Manual. The purpose of IDM is to define the information that one AEC/FM industry user needs to provide to one (or more) other AEC/FM industry users to support their work. This means that IDM delivers information at specific points in the business process.

As well as defining the information that is needed, IDM also includes the idea of a ‘Manual’. That is, it gives guidance to users on providing the information both at a general level and specifically for individual software applications.

• Focus on customer and end-user requirements and sustainability within the building process and life cycle phases

• Increasing transparency in the decision-making process and re-engineering the building process with new business opportunities for new and existing actors

• Cost saving to all actors and a better project economy

• Improved possibilities for early stage analysis about: best practice design, construction cost, energy consumptions, environmental impacts, lifecycle cost, performance in use, flexibility, adaptability, indoor climate, usability and maintainability

• A comprehensive and common international knowledge model database with standardized ICT tools, objects and communication rules and available best practices examples.

IFC and use of BIM have great potential for value creationduring the whole life of buildings
