Sarah Wood currently has more than $50,000 of medical bills due to her accident and no viable way of repaying. The Student Social Work Association is using the O’Bleness Health System Race For A Reason as a platform for which to fundraise for Sarah and her family. Not everyone can afford health insurance and in accordance with their mission, the Student Social Work Association would like to help Sarah Wood get back to health. The Student Social Work Association is excited to partner with O’Bleness Health System Race for a Reason this year. The Student Social Work Association is a student-led organization associated with Ohio University. The group is composed of Ohio University students who are interested in participating in service projects to address needs in our local communities. “Sarah Wood is the sister in law of our alumni Hallie Wood,” said Dr. Haberkorn. “While out on a ride on her ATV, Sarah was involved in a tragic accident. She was not wearing a helmet when the ATV she was riding flipped over and landed on her face, shattering every bone from her eye sockets down. Sarah has so far underwent eight surgeries; in the future she will need to receive a donor palate, as hers was left without a blood supply and unable to be reattached. Sarah did not have medical insurance when the accident occurred and is still without any type of insurance or assistance.” The main aim of the organization is to impact the lives of those living in Athens and surrounding communities in a positive manner. It is their mission to recognize needs within communities around them and to do everything they can to help individuals meet those needs.
