Connector Types

BNC connectors offer easy engagement and disengagement using bayonet couplings andoverlapping dielectrics. They are most useful for frequently coupled and uncoupled RFconnections with frequencies below 4 GHz. BNC connectors find applications in flexiblenetworks, instrumentation, and computer peripheral interconnections.

TNC connectors have an interface similar to BNC except for a threaded coupling nut. Thetighter fit provided by this screw-on connection improves interface control allowingconnectors to operate up to 11 GHz. TNC connectors are excellent for mobile units oraircraft where top-notch performance is required under vibration.

F & G Series connectors offer enhanced performance beyond 1 GHz. Designed to meetthe rigorous requirements of Bellcore TA-NWT-001503 and SCTE specifications, the F & Gseries provides high current carrying capabilities in both sealed and un-sealedconfigurations. Plugs, jacks and adapters are available in threaded and push-on versions.These connectors meet the evolving needs of the communications industry for increasedreliability and performance.

SMB connectors feature a snap coupling for fast connection. A self centering outer springand overlapping dielectric allows easy snap-on and excellent performance even inmoderate vibration. The SMB is smaller in size than the SMA and excellent whereengineers are concerned about circuit miniaturization. Typical application is inter- or intra-board connection of RF or digital signals. Commercial 50 ohm versions operate to 4 GHz,and 75 ohm versions reach 2 GHz.

SMA threaded connectors are widely used in avionics, radar and microwavecommunications and instrumentation. Connectors operate to at least 12.4 GHz on flexiblecoax cables, and up to 26.5 GHz on semi-rigid coax cables. Crimp-on SMA connectorsthat operate to 26.5 GHz are available.

MCX connectors offer a high reliability, space saving sub-miniature coaxial cable to cableand cable to board interconnection system. The MCX connectors impedance types areapplicable up to 6 GHz.

Blind Mate connectors operate to 22 GHz for OSP, 26.5 GHz for 3.5 mm, 28 GHz forOSSP, and 40 GHz for 2.8 mm and OSMP styles. These connectors offer easy slide-onconnection and require less alignment between the cable and the equipment than otherconnectors with comparable band width. Blind Mate connectors are widely used ascoaxial interconnects between plug-in modules and motherboards when axial and radialmisalignments are necessary.

N Series threaded connectors have an air dielectric interface, are low cost and areavailable in 50 and 75 ohm impedance types. These connectors operate to 11 GHz andare commonly used in cable-based local-area networks (LAN’s) medium powertransmitters, test equipment, and base station antenna applications.

Surface Mount (SMT) connectors. The RF solution to the communication and informationage. These connectors (OSMT,SSMT and SMT Quick Grip) are designed to meet thegrowing demand for surface mount RF connector technology. These connectors operateup to 6 GHz utilizing cable assembly design to terminate to SMT connectors. Surfacemount connectors contribute to high density packaging and high volume manufacturingrequirements.

The AMP BNC RF connectorfamily with bayonet lockingcoupling provides highlyreliable, quick connect /disconnect coaxialconnections. Exclusivesingle and O crimpterminations allow positiveinsulation grip and requireno soldering, providingterminations at a very lowoverall applied cost.

Available in both 50 and 75ohm versions, theseconnectors feature

numerous styles includingcable plugs and jacks,adapters and printed circuitboard connectors. Inaddition to a variety of crimptype terminations,connectors are furnished infield replaceable and twist-on styles. These connectorsaccept a wide range ofcoaxial cables and areintermateable with industrystandard connectorsdesigned to MIL-C-39012specifications.

Tyco Electronics can alsosupply low cost alternativeswith an extensivecommercial type productline. A lower cost consumerseries product offers thecapability to supply centercontacts in strip form andallow for automated centercontact crimp technology. All connectors are designedaround the mil-specifications,but utilize low-cost materials,offering comparablemechanical and electricalperformance.

TNC Connectors

The AMP TNC RF connec-tor family, with 7/16-28threaded couplings,provides low noise levelsand optimum stability, andcan withstand the shockand vibration often presentin hostile environments.

Available in both 50 and 75 ohm versions, theseconnectors featurenumerous styles includingcable plugs and jacks,adapters and printed circuitboard connectors. Theseconnectors accept a widerange of coaxial cables andare intermateable withindustry standardconnectors designed toMIL-C-39012 specifications.

Single crimp connectorsprovide reducedapplication time and lowerapplied costs. This isaccomplished by usingAMP one-crimp operationtooling whichsimultaneously terminatesthe inner conductor, outerbraid and cable supportwith one controlled stroke.

Tyco Electronics can alsosupply low-cost alternativeswith a commercial typeproduct line. Theseconnectors are designedaround the mil-specifications, offeringcomparable mechanicaland electrical performance.

AMP CapacitivelyDecoupled connectorsprovide the fast, better wayto reduce noise and reduceground loops on coaxialinterconnections. The high-frequency noise generatedby fast rise times can causeboth false triggering ofcircuits as well as emissionsthat can be radiated orconducted outside theequipment. Such emissionscan interfere with nearbyequipment. Ground loopsare also a problem fornetworked systems.Ground loops are causedwhen two interconnectedunits are at different voltagepotentials.

The typical way to handlesuch EMI and ground loopproblems is to decouple thecable shield from the groundpanel by soldering aceramic disk capacitorbetween the cable shieldand the panel. Thecapacitor shunts high-frequency noise to ground.While effective, thisapproach is time consumingand expensive.

The CapacitivelyDecoupled connector hasbuilt-in chip capacitors.These capacitors establishthe electrical contactbetween the outer shieldand a clip. This clip

provides a short electricalpath between thecapacitors and panel. As aresult, high-frequency noiseis effectively shunted toground, while the DC pathis blocked.

The connectors offercompatibility in design andmanufacture. The samefootprint and dimensionalenvelope make them adrop-in replacement forAMP standard BNC or TNCprinted circuit boardconnectors. In addition,they can be roboticallypicked and placed for high-speed automated assemblyto pc boards.

SMA Connectors

Tyco Electronics offers acomplete line of SMAconnectors designed forperformance to 18 GHz.The SMA product line offersstainless steel bodies, aswell as non-ferrous metals.Various plating options areavailable, including Goldand White Bronze. The SMAinterface is fully compatiblewith Mil-C-39012.

The SMA series meets theperformance, quality andapplication requirements ofthe commercialmarketplace. This includesWhite Bronze plating, aunique finish developed byTyco Electronics to addressapplications requiring anon-magnetic plating. This plating is highlyresistant to wear, andcontains no ferrous metals, thus displaying

excellent intermodulationcharacteristics.

To satisfy the broad rangeof commercial applications,SMA connectors areavailable in a broad rangeof standard configurationsincluding; straight and rightangle cable applied plugs,bulkhead cable jacks, twoand four hole flange mountpanel jacks, straight andright angle pcb mount jacksand various between and inseries adapters. Numerouspackaging and testingoptions are also available to meet specific system criteria as well.

Additionally, standardmilitary approved (QPL)interfaces are offered aswell. Including connectorsfor semi-rigid cable andmicro strip applications.

The 3 Piece SMA offering is designed especially forapplications in cellularinfrastructure where Inter-Modulation Products (IMP)must be minimized. Bylimiting non-linearities withinthe connectors, IMP isreduced and increasedchannel capacity can beoffered.

SMB Connectors are avail-able in commercial andhigh rel versions. They areideally suited for circuitminiaturization and areoffered in a wide range ofconfigurations includingplugs, right angle plugs,jacks, bulkhead jacks andadapters, as well as printedcircuit board and solderjacks.

Termination costs are keptto a minimum using plugsand jacks with a crimp cen-ter contact and hex crimpouter braid. Both hand heldtooling and pneumaticbench-mounted tooling isavailable. Easily assembledright-angle plugs have ahex crimp on the outerbraid ferrule and bifurcatedsolder center contacts.

AMP 75 Ohm BT 43 SMBConnectors feature uniquespring mating with snap-fitcouplings for quick con-nect/disconnect. Theseconnectors are designed to be intermateable with 75Ohm SMB MIL-C-39012connectors. They also fea-ture reliable dual crimpcable terminations.

They offer the same lowconsistent mating/unmatingforce as AMP standard SMBproducts and therefore,outer contact resistancevalues are maintained fromconnector to connector.

Standard military,commercial or AMP toolingcan be used to terminatethese products. Costeffective assembly of thestraight plugs is completedwith a crimp center contactand hex crimp on the outerbraid. Right angle plugshave a hex crimp on theouter braid ferrule andbifurcated solder centercontacts.

Between Series Adapters

Between Series CoaxialTransmission Line Adaptersprovide convenienttransitions between popularseries coaxial connectors.The adapter design providesa minimum length consistentwith good electricalperformance. The small size,low VSWR, and broadfrequency coverage permitsa wide range of applicationsin both measurement andsystems use.

Design and ConstructionThe standard units areconstructed of stainlesssteel with passivated finish,nickel plated brass, andgold plated brass. Thematerial and plating is to beconsistent with the basicconnector series. Alldielectrics are TFEfluorocarbon. The centercontacts are made ofberyllium copper, goldplated.

TypesThe straight in-line adaptersare available in manycombinations of plug andjack (male and female)configurations. Also, popularpanel mount versions arecataloged. For specialmodifications and hermeticseal version, consult TycoElectronics.

ApplicationThe major application is therequirement for a low VSWR,

compact transition in bothtest system and operatingsystems. Many panel mountand bulkhead mountversions are available so thedesigner can use small sizeconnectors for internaldesign, but adapt to a largerrugged version for externalconnection.

Pneumatic ToolsThe 626 Pneumatic Tool System, as the name implies, willapply a broad range of products in the 6-26 AWG [13-0.12mm2] wire range. A basic 626 Pneumatic Tool Systemrequires a power unit, a tool holder, a crimp head assemblyand a die set when applicable. This premium system is wellsuited for low- to medium- volume production and harnessassembly operations. Since the crimp head can be rotatedto any angle, the operator can also work on more difficultterminations in confined equipment cabinets or enclosures.

Interchangeable tool holder assemblies and crimpingheads are available to crimp a variety of products.Crimping heads for the earlier Model 2614 pneumaticpower unit can be used with the 626 Pneumatic ToolSystem. If you are already using AMP hand tools, manycrimp heads and die sets can be removed, attached to anadapter with quick pins and used with the 626 PneumaticTool System. Application Tooling

Bench-Mounted MachinesAMP-O-LECTRIC bench-mounted, semi-automatic terminating machines may be used to apply RF productssuch as Commercial BNC and TNC Connectors, Miniatureand Standard UHF Connectors, and Braid-Pic Contactsand Terminals. The Model G unit features interchangeableapplicators, and is used to apply strip-form contacts.
