    Guidance on good installation practice for seismic bracing and anchoring isavailable from many diverse sources. For ease in use, this report is a compilation

    of references to this information: existing codes, standards and best practices for

    installation of equipment and mechanical systems to mitigate post earthquakedamage. It includes readily available information on sprinkler systems,

    combustible liquid systems, piping, electrical equipment, and mechanical

    equipment from U.S. and selected international sources.

    1. Introduction and Background

    There is range of equipment and mechanical systems in buildings that are vulnerable to

    seismic damage. The failure of fire protection systems; the release of fire protection

    agents, fire protection liquids, or flammable or combustible liquids or gases; and thecreation of fire hazards are all forms of property damage which can occur during an

    earthquake. Equipment damage mitigation strategies include the provision of restraint,

    for example anchors and bracing systems, or other design details such as flexible joints.

    Vulnerable equipment types include sprinkler systems, combustible liquid systems,

     piping, electrical equipment, and mechanical equipment. Each of these types has unique

    requirements for installation of seismic bracing, anchors, and specific methods for

     protecting equipment from earthquake damage. The goal of this project was to identify

    and compile available guidance in the literature into a readily accessible form. Note that

    this is not a complete list of references; however an attempt was made to identify thosereadily available publications of most relevance to the topic.

    2. Standards and Guidance Compilation Process

    An extensive search of published standards, publications, and the academic literature was

    conducted and references were compiled.

    Each publication was assigned a unique index number. To assess the most current

    version, all of the guidance is sorted by date. To aid readers who are seeking information

    about a specific type of equipment, the guidelines are grouped by equipment type. Some

    documents in the list are available on line; some are available through the NFPA library;

    and some require purchase.

    For each publication, the list includes the title, specific page or chapter numbers where

    relevant, date of publication, a brief summary or comment about the information, and

    links on where to find it.

    The compilation has twelve sections. Other than the final two sections, each section is for

    a different type of equipment: sprinkler systems, combustible liquid systems, medical gas

     piping, refrigerant piping, cable trays, transformers, tanks, ovens/furnaces, general

    equipment, and other equipment. Sprinkler systems and combustible liquid systems are

    divided into subcategories. The sprinkler systems section is divided into sprinkler system

     piping, fire pumps, and sprinkler system storage tanks. The combustible liquid systems

    section is divided into combustible liquid tanks and combustible liquid piping. The

    general equipment section includes information that is not specific to a particular type of

    equipment.

    Section 11 contains selected literature published by manufacturers/other private sector

    organizations. This list was subjectively chosen, and includes those private sector

    guidelines thought to be useful to readers.

    Section 12 contains relevant publications which are not guidelines for seismic protection

    or do not belong in any of the above categories.

    Section 13 contains selected, readily available, international publications which may be

    of interest.

    Many guidelines are listed several times, since they are applicable to more than one type

    of equipment. The page numbers or chapter numbers are provided for each specific type

    of equipment covered in the document.

    Some guidelines are specifically designed for a specific type of site or project, such as a

    nuclear facility; this is explained in the comments.

    It should be noted that even though types of equipment are separated by section in the

    compilation, readers may need to look at multiple sections for one equipment installation.

    For example, for ovens, an installer may need to refer to the sections for ovens, exhaust

    stacks, suction tanks, piping, fire pumps, etc.
