To promote success for learners as an ongoing process of personal and social development.

School Cross Country The weather was very kind last Tuesday, allowing us to run the school cross country. Every student who participated tried their hardest and for many it was their ‘first ever’ cross country - ka pai! Home & School Committee Thank you to those who have bought or sold Entertainment Books or given a donation to the school. Money from this fundraiser will go towards upgrading our Adventure Playground.

The next fundraiser is quite a special one - we will soon be selling aluminium fish for families to purchase, decorate and then return to school so that we can create 1 or 2 amazing “fish murals” in our swimming pool complex. This is your chance to have your own artwork displayed in the school for at least a few years, as well as helping to contribute to the development of our pool. At the moment, we are raising funds to install showers in the changing rooms and solar power for the school so that we can heat the pool year-round for free! More news about this soon… until then, start practising your fish painting skills.

The school disco will be held on Friday 23 June – if you can help with baking, running the food stall, lighting etc. please give Jenni Pethig a call on 027 448 5797.

If you would like to join our group, we’d love to see you at our next meeting. Please email me at: [email protected]

Community Consultation 2017 - Survey Monkey A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their voice to this very important community survey. We are currently analysing this information so that it can be reported back to the community at our community evening on Thursday 15 June, 6pm – hope to see you there!!

Board of Trustees News Last week the Board attended a meeting held at Newlands College for all school boards in the Newlands Cluster. Suze Strowger, Director of Education (Wgtn) and her team spoke to all board members and principals about the benefits of forming a Community of Learning (COL). Each board will now relay their comments back through their school’s principal to take to the next principals’ cluster meeting later this term. An interesting point made was that there is a finite pot of money for COLS and once it has been allocated, some communities who have not formed a COL may miss out on this funding, e.g. for resourcing to attend MOE professional development opportunities.

We are awaiting news from the MOE property advisors with regard to the success of their application to fund the housing of a Wellington RTLB (Resource Teacher and Learning) cluster at our school. If this funding is granted, the Board and MOE would then enter the next level of discussions - i.e. clarifying how such a proposal could be of benefit to our school community and what this might look like. The Board met last week to discuss the information that we currently have from the MOE and to reach a clear, shared understanding of what we believe our school community would need to gain, if such a proposal were to proceed.

Mark Williams, Chair

Teaching and Learning Our teaching team is meeting over the next few weeks to discuss assessment and OTJs (Overall Teacher Judgements) for our students, in preparation for mid-year reporting to parents later this term. All year 4-6 students will receive their progress report at the end of this term. Students in years 1-3 receive their progress and end of year reports throughout the year, based on when their anniversary falls - i.e. on their birthday (end of year report) and then 20 school weeks after this (progress report). Every parent is encouraged to meet with their child’s classroom teacher at least twice in the year. Parents are welcome to make additional meetings as required.

To support those children who need assistance with developing learning and/or behaviour strategies, the Board is providing additional funding to enable a teacher aide to work in the year 2-4 classrooms. We also run PTP (Parent Tutor Reading Programme) to support our readers who need extra mileage, at no cost to the school. We value the huge commitment that our volunteers make to support our students and we thank you for this.

Activity Fees ($80) and Voluntary Donations ($90) This money is used to enhance classroom learning, either through additional programmes or new resources. Already this year, each child has benefited from the following programmes: Easyswim swimming lessons and moveMprove gymnastics ($44.00 per student), Space Place Carter Observatory & Te Papa trip ($14 each, including bus fare), EasyBlog ($3.50 per child), Hapara for yr 3-6 students ($3.50 per child) and softball lessons (gold coin per child). As you can see, every child has already had the benefit of over half of this year’s school fees. Where possible the school also tries very hard to secure either free or heavily-subsidised programmes for our students to benefit from, e.g. Kiwisport subsidises Easyswim and moveMprove programmes ($1200); Easyswim will be offering free swimming lessons in term 4 (valued at $140.00 per child). 51% of our families have paid their fees to date – we ask that those who have yet to pay their fees please complete payment as soon as possible. Arrangements for weekly or fortnightly contributions can easily be put in place to spread payment. Thank you.

Saturday Morning Netball Our team play each Saturday at NIS and we’d love to see you there to watch them. Netballers - please remember to pay your fees to the school office if you have not done so already. Thank you.

Keep Toys at Home Please remind children to leave toys at home. This week I have had a number of students’ fidget-spinners, which have been removed from their owners and placed on my desk for safekeeping during school time. These and other toys are a distraction to our children’s learning if used in the classroom and are at risk of loss if brought to school.

Ma/Whero Kelly Always giving her full attention to what she is working on.

Kowhai Daniel For organising the milk and being a great monitor.

Kahurangi Kennedy-Grace Showing her netball team respect by completing her road patrol duty after school and

turning up to netball practice as soon as her job was done.

Ma/Whero Benjamin Accuracy in reading and word development in writing.

Kahurangi Andrew For developing knowledge about himself when setting his goals, as well as

showing perseverance in his goal setting, working on it at school and at home via

Hapara.

Ma/Whero Pranesh Showing respect in every situation.

Kowhai Joziah Being exceptionally helpful when Kowhai started using Chromebooks. You are going to

be a fantastic technology monitor.

Kahurangi Zaylah Showing respect to her peers by making the right call in a challenging situation.

Ma/Whero Gino Enthusiasm for reading. Moving more than one level to another reading rocket.

Kowhai Andrew Getting your email up and running by yourself, including changing your profile photo.

Well done!

Kahurangi Conor Sharing his math strategy with Miss Hills.

Kahurangi Caty Took learning into her own hands and found a book on the solar system to grow her

knowledge on the subject.

Assembly Award Congratulations!

What to Do When Your Child is Sick If your child is unwell and not coming to school, please notify the Office before 9am. Telephone 04 939 0186, email [email protected] or use the automated absence email on our website http://www.rewarewa.school.nz/report-an-absence.html We must hear from a parent/caregiver, so please do not ask children to notify us or rely on classroom teachers to pass on a message.

At Bigair Gymsports, kids love Gymnastics, Trampolining, Tumbling, Parkour and Cheerleading! Coaching kids at Bigair Gym is one of the most rewarding jobs as we get to support kids and see them develop new gym skills, like cartwheels and walkovers etc which kids love, and they learn a range of personal skills; including increased self-confidence, self-reflection and pride in their achievements as they progress through our 10 level badge programme. It is highly recommended that children start gym-nastics at 3yrs due to being excellent preparation for starting school, and once children are at school, gym replicates the funda-mental learning processes which supports children’s learning at school so the benefits and rewards are substantial. To find out what class would benefit your child the most, please call our Tawa Bigair Gym on 2323508 or email [email protected]
