Finding saved documents
• What if you lost a very vital document on your computer?▫ What do you do? ▫ How do feel? ▫ Deadline is today and your lecturer is all so
strict.• It’s just “Search utility” on your computer!!!

What is “Search Utility” and how to use it?• A facility that helps you search for documents
that were once saved on your computer.• Can be accessed from the Start menu.• It is also found in a window of an application
e.g. My Computer, My Documents etc.

Practice: Using “Search Utility”• On your computer, click on Start Menu.• Move to “Search” and then click. A window
opens.

• In the Search companion task pane, click on Documents( Word processing, Spreadsheets etc..)
• Click on Within this Week and then click on Search. Search begins.

Using Flash Drives and Disks
• A flash drive is a storage device.• Comes in different types and sizes depending on
a designers’ choice.

Practice- How to Safely Plug In a Flash Drive • Plug in a flash drive. Wait for it to read.• On a dialog box that appears, click on Take no
Action.

• Click on OK.• Open My Computer.• Right- click Drive E, F, G, or on a drive
representing your USB drive.

• On a dialog box that appears, click Explore. A Window similar to the one below appears.

Practice- Safely Removing or Ejecting a Flash Drive• NOTE: Do not plug out a flash drive when it is
still being used. Instead;▫ In the Taskbar, click (left click) on the Safely
remove Hardware icon
▫ On the lists of options that appears, click on safely remove USB drive.
▫ If successful, a message appears telling saying ”safe to remove USB drive”.

More About Virus Protection• What is a virus?
▫ A malicious program that installs itself on a computer.
▫ They are in different types and perform different tasks.
• What they do generally?▫ Cause files and folders to stop opening.▫ Damage files of the operating system▫ Monitors how is used and send a report to the
programmer secretly.

• Track your internet usage i.e. sites visited, downloads, communication networks, etc.
• Sending messages to inbox recipients.

How to prevent viruses
• Updating the anti-virus at least once or twice a week.
• Performing regular scans of;▫ The whole computer.▫ Selected areas of a computer.▫ Scheduled scans on different intervals.

• Making sure the anti-virus is of the current version e.g. making sure if you are in 2011, your anti-virus is up-to-date by checking for recent releases by the programmers of your anti-virus.

Example- Exploring AVG Free Edition Anti-Virus• Free Edition means;
▫ No moneys are to be paid in order to make use of the anti-virus.
▫ A user can use the anti-virus but with limitations to some of the features.
