THE NINE YEARS WAR The Ulster lords united under Hugh O’Neill

because they feared that Elizabeth wanted to take away their power. O’Neill knew that they could not defeat the English on their own so asked for help from the Catholic King Philip of Spain. The Spanish arrived too late and in the wrong place (Kinsale in Cork). O’Neill was defeated in the Battle of Kinsale 1601 and eventually surrendered in 1603 when he signed the Treaty of Mellifont. This agreed that the chiefs had to do what they were told, give up Irish laws and customs and allow Protestant preachers into Ulster.
