Moses Sends Out the Spies – Num. 13:1-3

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I

am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man,

every one a leader among them."

So Moses sent them from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the Lord,

all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.

Moses’ Orders – Num. 13:17-20 Then Moses said to them, "Go up this way into the South, and go up to the mountains, and see what the

land is like: whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many; whether the land they

dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds; whether the land is rich

or poor; and whether there are forests there or not.

Be of good courage. And bring some of the fruit of the land."

So they went up and spied out the land.

The Spies Reported On the Land – Num. 13:25-29

And they returned from spying out the land after forty days and came back to Moses and Aaron… in the Wilderness of Paran, they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit

of the land.Then they told him, and said: "We went to the land

where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very

large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea

and along the banks of the Jordan."

Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are

well able to overcome it." But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are

not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we." And they gave the children of Israel

a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as

spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.

There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak…); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and

so we were in their sight."

The people murmured against Moses and Aaron Numbers 14:1-4

So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night.

And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole

congregation said to them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness! Why has the Lord

brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become

victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"

So they said to one another, "Let us select a leader and return to Egypt."

Moses and Aaron prayed and Joshua and Caleb try to persuade the people Numbers 14:5-10

Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of

Israel.

But Joshua and Caleb who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; and

they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: "The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord

delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, 'a land which flows with milk and

honey.‘

Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their

protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them." And all the

congregation said to stone them with stones.

Moses Intercedes Numbers 14:11-19

Then the Lord said to Moses: "How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them? I will strike them

with the pestilence and disinherit them..." And Moses said to the Lord: "Then the Egyptians will hear it, for by Your might You brought these people up from among

them… They have heard that You, Lord, are among these people… Now if You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying,

'Because the Lord was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them…

And now, I pray… Pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this

people, from Egypt even until now."

Then the Lord said: "I have pardoned, according to your word; but truly, as I live, all the earth

shall be filled with the glory of the Lord– because all these men who have seen My glory

and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now

these ten times, and have not heeded My voice, they certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those

who rejected Me see it. But My servant Caleb, because he has a

different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his

descendants shall inherit it.

This generation shall not enter the land. Numbers 14

Say to them, 'As I live,' says the Lord, 'just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to

you: The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and

above.

But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the

land which you have despised.

Those very men who brought the evil report about the land, died by the plague before the Lord. But Joshua and Caleb remained alive.

If you won’t do it, God will find someone who will!

This is a summary of what God did.

Compare with Psalms 106:24-27: “Then they despised the

pleasant land; they did not believe His word, but complained in

their tents, and did not heed the voice of the LORD. Therefore He raised up His

hand in an oath against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness, to

overthrow their descendants among the nations, and to scatter

them in the lands.”

What keeps you out of the Land?

“They were not able to enter because of unbelief.” (Heb. 3:19)

“Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God.” (Heb. 3:12)

Concerning Israel's Opinion Of Their Situation…

grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."

The Testimony of Rahab. Joshua 2:9-11 Rahab said to the men: "I know that the Lord has

given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan.... As soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

God’s work does not depend on any one man.

No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life;

as I was with Moses so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous that you may observe

to do according to all the law … that you may prosper wherever you go (1:5-7).

Joshua sent out two men to spy secretly … especially Jericho.

So they came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lodged there … and it was told

the king of Jericho … but she hid them up on the roof with the stalks of flax … she said to them: I know that the LORD has given you

the land … for we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea … and

what you did to the two kings of the Amorites … for the LORD your God, He is God in

heaven above and on earth beneath (2:1-11).

Hebrews 11:31 • “By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after

she had welcomed the spies in peace.”

James 2:25 • “You see that a man is justified by works, and

not by faith alone. And in the same way was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she received the messengers and sent them

out by another way? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith

without works is dead.”

“By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and He will without fail drive out from before you the nations … Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan … the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam.”

• So it was, when all the kings of the Amorites who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, that their heart melted; and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the children of Israel.

Once in the LandWho went first? The priests carrying the ark. God performed a miracle to get them out

(Red Sea) and a miracle to get them in (Jordan River).

Although the Lord is revealed as Captain of the Lord’s host and the symbol is now the sword, the strategy in holy warfare for soldiers of the Lord is not to build a fortress, but an altar…a fortress of worship and prayer.

Two things were necessary before engaging the enemy: (1) Purification by circumcision (2) The Passover

• So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

A Scarlet Thread of Redemption

• Rahab tied the cord of scarlet thread in her window, risking all her life upon it.

• The scarlet cord in the window protected her and her family from destruction, as in Exodus 12:13 “when I see the blood I will pass over.”

•Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor, Ibleam, or Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. •Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

A Thread of Redemption The Kinsman Redeemer

Naomi had a kinsman whose name was Boaz. Ruth “happened” to come to the portions of the field belonging to Boaz.

So Boaz took Ruth, she became his wife, and the LORD enabled her to conceive … so they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

Boaz bought the field to get the Bride … Jesus’ parable of the treasure in the field. (Mt.13:44)
