J(onnoak Baptist To Add Building

An estimated $17,000 will be :!ipent by Konnoak Baptist Church to complete the first portion of a {our-phase building program.

The Rev. Luther J. Matthews, pastor, reports that the congrega­tion, upon the recommendation of the church planning and survey committee, has voted to construct an education unit of two floors and renovate the present building.

This is the first step in the four­step program, the minister ex­plained. At later dates the church hopes to erect a sanctuary and administration offices, to build an­other education unit and to land­scape the church property, provid­ing parking area on the rear property and establishing an out­door worship chapel.

pastor of the First Baptist church here for the past nine years, has resigned to accept the call of the Community Center Baptist church, Rt. 2, Halifax.

Mr. Matthews came to Washington in October, 1961 from the Konnak Baptist church of Winston-Salem. His resignation 1s etrect1vc at­end of the month.

During his tenure here Mr. Matthews has served on the Board of Mental Health as director, a member of the Good Neighbor council, president of the Beaufort County Ministerial association, and a member of

the committee for promotion of bond sales for the addition to the

The church has acquired additional property for parking which also holds a youth center known as "Uncle John's Cabin. " The church has also added a program for preschool children which in­cludes a three-year playschool, a four-year kindergarten, and a five-year kindergarten. The church has doubled its budget and has called a full-time Miniter of Music and Education and a church secretary.

Revival Set The Rev. Luther J. Matthews,

Mr. Matthews is a graduate of Mars Hill College and Wake Forest University.

CORINTH PASTOR, the Rev. Luther J. Matthews, is a native of Rose Hill, returning here in May, 1974, to assume the pastorate of Corinth Baptist Church, west of Rose Hill. His wife, the former Wilma Fussell, is also a native of Rose Hill and they married after being high school sweethearts. They have three children-.Jim, who is a sales representative with Edmac Co., is married, has three children, and lives in Winston Salem; Betsy, who is married to Larry Heath, has two children and lives in Concord; and Ronald, a chemist with Ciba-Geigy Co., is married and lives in Kernersville. Mr. Matthews has served for forty years in the ministry and has held pastorates in Winston-Salem, Washington <N.,C.) and Halifax. He toured the South American mission fields in 1960 and made a preaching tour to five South American countries h\ 1967. He has also served on various committees in the Baptist Sta~e Conventions. "I am happy to be back in the Rose Hill area," the Rev. Mr. Matthews asserted, "and I enjoy the community and its fine people. I am looking for­ward to a fruitful ministry here." A native of Duplin County, Rev. Matthews has served in the ministry for the past 50 years and assl.uned his new position on June 17 of this year. He served in the Winston-Salem area for 28 years; pastor of the First Bap-

The Rev. Luther Matthews To Lead Four-Day Crusade

The Rev. Luther Matthews will conduct a four-day crusade at Roanoke Worship Center in Ply­mouth Sunday through Wednesday.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Matthews is a graduate of Mars Hill College and Wake _Forest Unive_r:sity. His first pastorate waS1n 1934 at Wallburg Baptist Church near Winston-Salem. He ministered in the Winston-Salem area for 26 years. Under the au­spices of Winston-Salem's First Baptist Church, he founded Kon­noak Baptist and was pastor there for nine years.

In 1961, Matthews accepted the pastorate at First Baptist Church in Washington and was there un­til1970 when he moved to Hali­fax. There he was pastor at the Community Center Baptist until 1974. He then moved to Rose Hill and pastored Corinth Baptist un­til his retirement in 1978.

Since his retirement, Matth­ews has served six North Caroli-

na churches in the Roanoke Bap­tist Association on an interim basis.

Matthews graduated from Rose Hill High School in 1929, Mars Hill College in 1932 and from Wake Forest College in 1934. He began the ministry in 1931 and was ordained at Rose Hill Baptist Church in 1934.

He entered his first pasto­rate in Octocber, 1934 at Wallburg Baptist Church in Wallburg. He continued to pastor churches in the Winston-Salem area over the next 26 years.

Matthews departed Winston-Salem in 1961 to take a nine-year pastorate with the First Baptist Church ofWashington. He became the pastor of the Community Cen­ter Baptist Church in Halifax in 1970.

He went on to become the pastor of Corinth Baptist Church in Rose Hill in 1974. He retired in 1978.

Since he retired he has served the following churches in the North Roanoke Baptist

Association: Hobgood, Hick­ory, South Rosemary, First Baptist of Roanoke Rapids, Roanoke, Community Cente.r and Halifax.

He also served as an in­terim missionary on the is­land of Guam in 1979, 1986 and 1987.

Matthews served as the Mi­nister for the Ordination Ser­vice at Tillery Christian Church at the Tillery Correc­tional Center until Oct. 1992.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hedgepeth Williams Matthews of the home: three children, Jim Matthews of Statesville; Betsy Heath of Kannapolis and Ron Matth­ews of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters, Anna Johnson and Lucille Waller of Rose Hill; five grandchildren; four great­grandchildren; four step­children, Robert Williams and Jean Brown of Richmond, Va., Steve Williams of Halifax and Linda Lawrence of Rocky Mount.

Rev. Luther J. Matthews of Halifax has been called to the pastorate of Roanoke Baptist Church, located at the corner of First and Henry streets here.

Rev. Matthews had served as interim pastor of Roanoke Baptist Church for the past nine months .

. He is a native of Rose Hill ·and a graduate of Mars Hill College and Wake Forest Uni­versity. He has held pas­torates in many locations throughout North Carolina, and has been active in the work of the North Roanoke Baptist Association and the local Ministerial Association.

Rev. Matthews has toured Southern Baptist Mission work in Peru, Chile, Argen­tina and Brazil; and also at­tended the Baptist World Con­gress in Rio De Janerio; he conducted a three-weeks preaching tour in Colombia, Ecquador, Chile and Brazil. He has held interim pas­torates in Tamuning Baptist Church in Guam and several others in the North Roanoke Association, including more recently, First Baptist of Roa­noke Rapids.

He was married to the late Wilma Fussell and they had three children, L. J. Jr. of Winston-&llem; Betsy Heath of Kannapolis and Ron of

Greensboro. He is now mar­ried to the former Dorothy H. Williams of Halifax.

Roanoke Baptist Church re­cently celebrated its 25th anniversary and is a cooperating Southern Baptist Church. The church offers Bible Study for every age and many other activities. Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday morning, with worship service at 11 a.m.
