TO YOURS

Dear Parishioners,

Each of us is familiar with at least one - if not sev-

eral - of what we might call “God moments” in which God

reveals himself in Sacred Scripture. One of the most well-

known was brought to life on the big screen in Cecil B.

DeMille’s The Ten Commandments. We find this profound

God moment in today’s first reading from Exodus. He we

read of Moses’ encounter with God speaking to him from a

burning bush that was not being consumed by the flames!

Wouldn’t we give anything to witness such a profound God

moment?

The reality is, my dear friends, when we witness the

birth of a child or that child’s baptism we witness a most

profound God moment. When we lovingly prepare a special

meal for our family or serve the homeless a warm meal, we

witness a most profound God moment. We must not allow

ourselves to think that all the God moments have passed by.

These profound holy moments of God’s love intersecting

our lives play out every day. We must be attentive. We

must not grumble like an unbeliever, rather, we must till the

soil and fertilize around the fig tree in hopes it will produce

abundant fruit.

Lent is a time of tossing off whatever hinders us

from being good fertilizer, that is, from being the nourish-

ment someone in our life needs in order to find their way

back to Christ. To do this, it is good to remember those who

have been good fertilizer, good pruners, in our own lives.

Think of that teacher, pastor, parent, neighbor or grandpar-

ent who brought holy moments - God moments -into our

lives.

As believers in God’s unconditional love for us, we

know all of God’s holy moments have not passed us by.

Every time we gather for Mass, we celebrate one of the

most profound God moments known to humankind, and are

invited to partake in one of the most profound ways that

God is present to us.

In this most Blessed Sacrament of Holy Commun-

ion, Christ who is really and truly present nourishes us with

the gift of himself. We come forward to receive the bread of

life, so that we may be drawn closer to him and then share

his light and love with others by the witness of our lives.

Let us e open to the many and varied ways that God

wants to work in and through us, so that others might ex-

perience God’s love for them in and through our actions.

Third Sunday of Lent February , 282016

Archbishop Chaput’s Column: Of Lenten Films, and Faith Where it’s Least Expected

(excerpts from his Feb. 18 column) The Man Who Saved the World actually isn’t “religious” at all. Based on real events, the film (on the sur-

face) is a documentary about a recent United Nations award

for a man named Stanislav Petrov. A former colonel in the

Soviet military, Petrov is a largely unknown hero. As a nuclear

command officer in 1983, working purely on his instincts and

under intense pressure, he refused to order a missile counter-

strike on the United States when an error in Russian radar

falsely reported an American ICBM attack. The decision pre-

vented a catastrophe — but ironically, it ruined his career and

worsened a bitter split with his family. The film appears to be

about Petrov’s courage and its cost on the brink of nuclear

war. But beneath that is something even more moving: a story

of personal forgiveness and reconciliation. Full of Grace, now available in stores and through digital download, is a beautiful tale of Mary at the end of her earthly life. And The Young Messiah, due out in March, is the film adaptation of Anne Rice’s best-selling novel, Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. Both films are well done and well worth seeing. They approach the characters of Mary and the young Jesus before his public ministry in fresh and absorbing ways. Finally, and perhaps the best among these four films, is Risen, now in theaters. Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love, Enemy at the Gates) plays the role of a Roman centurion tasked with finding the “stolen” body of Jesus after the cruci-fixion. He gets much more than he bargained for. Peter Firth (The Hunt for Red October, Amistad, Spooks), as Pon-tius Pilate, heads an excellent supporting cast, and the story is unusual, believable and gripping. Risen is an outstanding piece of work.

Chapter Five: The God Claim From the beginning, Jesus Christ knew who he was and refused to fall into the trap of being defined by others. He knew

the message he had to proclaim and did not let himself be beaten by those who wanted him to be someone else. In the

bible, Jesus states that he is the “Son of Man” eighty times.

He showed his Divinity with both words and actions. He also acted and spoke in ways that allowed the Jewish people to

connect his actions and words with what the prophets had been saying about the long-awaited Messiah. Jesus was patient

but consistent in his teachings and showed both his divinity and humanity at every turn. Do we embrace both the

humanity and divinity of Jesus?

Jesus, the Son of God and the second person of the Holy Trinity showed his nature by:

• demonstrating control over nature

• claiming he was able to forgive sins.

• claiming to be the Lord of the Sabbath.

• demonstrating he had power over death.

Point to Ponder: Jesus is speaking directly to you in the Gospels.

Verse to live: “ I am the Way, and the Truth, and the life.”

Question to consider: What is holding you back from believing in Jesus completely?”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I trust in you.

PREP Registration March 1—April 30, 2016

Registration for PREP for the 2016-17 year will begin March 1. Saint Richard PREP is a one week, full day, summer program for students in grades 1 through 6. The program will be held June 20-24 from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The summer program will be supplemented with five Sunday Family Formation Sessions during the school year along with spiritual and service activities for the family. Participation in ALL aspects is necessary to be in the program also a family must be registered with Saint Richard Parish. Because we no longer offer a weekly program, please inform anyone that you know with an eligible child entering first to sixth grade next September to register for the summer program before April 30, 2016. Registration forms for current PREP families will be mailed home. Pre-Cana Classes In preparation for the sacrament of Marriage, Pre-

Cana classes are required for all couples. You must

Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held the

third Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Church. The

parents of the child are required to attend the class; god-

parents are also welcome but not required to attend.

Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the

Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended

the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your

godparents, you may then call the rectory for an appoint-

ment to book the date of your choosing. The next sched-

On Wednesday, March 9 Malvern Retreat House will hold a

day retreat for men and women who have recently lost their

spouses. The 9am to 3pm retreat will help provide hope and

healing and includes prayer time, inspiring talks, Mass, and

private Adoration. The retreat will be led by Deacon David

Schaffer, who in 2012 lost his wife of 46 years who died

suddenly, followed by his son 6 months later. Deacon David

has a degree in Pastoral Counseling.
