As always, it was a year of ups and downs! Applegrove participated in the first Lights Out event in the Beaches for Earth Hour on March 23. On a chilly spring night at Kew Gardens, several hundred people turned out the lights and celebrated with lanterns, candle light and music! Later in the year, in response to families’ needs, Applegrove opened additional spaces in the after-school program, increasing from 36 spaces at the beginning of 2013, to 63 by the end of the year. We also held our most successful Applicious festival ever. In its 6

th year,

Applicious: The Core of the Community brought 1500 people together for apple-themed fun, food, entertainment and information. With a generous matching grant from ScotiaBank, the event had more than $7,000 in net proceeds! However, not everything went smoothly during the year. Multiple transitions in finance staff caused significant challenges. Then in August, Corpus Christi Church, the home of our Edgewood Connection satellite program, discovered mould in the building. This meant that Edgewood could not re-open in September as usual, and remained closed into 2014. On behalf of Applegrove participants, I want to thank all the volunteers, members, donors, staff and friends for your energy, ideas, donations, friendship, loyalty, and creativity.

Susan Fletcher, Executive Director.

On 50 Fridays throughout 2013, an average of 15 expectant and new moms attended the Helping Our Babies Grow nutrition, information, and support program. The moms started when they were pregnant and could continue until their babies were 6 months old. About 900 different adults and their 1,000 children visited Applegrove’s two family resource/support programs free crafts, toys, puzzles, snacks, coffee/tea, workshops, fun, and support. The Applegrove Parent/Child Drop-in and the Edgewood Connection programs welcomed parents and caregivers and their children from birth up to age 6 adults on 22,000 visits. Over the Rainbow is a special group for children ages 3 to 5 who are experiencing difficulty in their lives. A parent group meets at the same time. The program helped 103 children and 93 adults over 29 sessions. In 2013, the After-School Program expanded from 36 to 63 spaces for children ages 6 to 12, resulting in more than 6500 visits. Applegrove’s Summer Adventure day camp for children 6 to 12 years old provided safe, affordable, and fun activities for up to 60 children per week for eight weeks in July and August. The Leadership Adventure brought young teens together in three sessions of two weeks each to practice skills in communication and teamwork during the summer. During the school year, more than 90 Teens attended evening drop-ins for special activities, games, trips, and more. Seniors visited Applegrove more than 2,300 times during 650 hours of activities for them to move, exercise their brains, learn computers, meet new friends, and much more.

Applegrove’s motto is Together, Building Our Community. As I was writing this, I did some research into the meaning of the word community. Here are some of the definitions I found: The meaning of community goes beyond the place you live. Community encompasses a group of people that support each other. It means being part of something bigger than yourself. Community supports individuals and families, offers friendship and guidance, opens a whole new world of opportunities and experiences, and provides a safe place where we never feel alone. Community means a sense of belonging, feeling valued and a connection to others. The members of Applegrove’s community embody these definitions daily. Our seniors and older adults get together regularly to write their memoirs, play some bingo and learn a new language. Our teens play basketball and spend time together weekly. Our school age children spend their time after school doing crafts, cooking, and playing games together, while our parents and young children get together daily to play, sing and share experiences. Applegrove’s staff, volunteers, board members and participants all work together to create a community that is supportive, offers friendship, and creates positive experiences for its members. It is truly an honour for my family and me to belong to such a strong and welcoming community. Thank you.
