Owner’s Manual

About the S12Thank you for purchasing the RevelConcerta S12 Surround-EffectsLoudspeaker. A wall-mountable surroundloudspeaker, the S12 loudspeaker wasdesigned to accomodate a wide variety ofhome theater setup possibilities. The S12delivers impressively accurate multichan-nel music and film soundtrack reproduc-tion.

The S12’s transducers effectively cover awide frequency spectrum. Dual 5-inch(127mm) woofers deliver impressive power-handling and precise imaging. Dual 1-inch(25mm) dome tweeters are mounted inControlled Acoustic Impedance™ wave-guides which dramatically improve off-axis response. The tweeters reproduce accu-rate high frequencies well above audiblelevels.

The Surround Mode Configuration controlfeatures three user-selectable settings:bipole, dipole and monopole dispersionmodes. This control optimizes the S12 forany recording formats, multiple placementoptions and varying listener preferences.

Dual-speaker mode configures the S12 tofunction as two separate loudspeakerswithin a single enclosure. This results inthe reproduction of two discrete surround-effects channels. The S12 loudspeaker’s dis-persion modes coupled with its versatilitycombine to create the perfect surroundspeaker for any 5.1-, 6.1- or 7.1-channelhome theater installation.

Combining superior form and function, the S12 transducers feature a distinctivedesign that allows for smoother frequencyresponse. The woofer cones and tweeter areconstructed with Organic CeramicComposite cone material to reduce distor-tion. The spiders are constructed with ahigh-strength cotton blend with optimizedgeometry for increased linearity.

An advanced woofer motor structure uses ahigh-grade Neodymium magnet placed atthe center, inside the voice coil, forimproved magnetic shielding. A black-plat-ed steel cup facilitates heat dissipation forhigher power handling.

The woofers are built with butyl rubbersurrounds for large, linear excursion capa-bilities. The woofers also include copperround-wire voice coils wound on 1.5-inch(38mm) fiberglass bobbins which enablehigher power handling. Vented centerpoles improve temperature cooling andminimize compression.

The tweeter domes are under-hung withcopper-clad aluminum wire for low distor-tion. The tweeter magnets containFerrofluid® which helps to achieve high-power handling with reduced compression.Magnetic shielding prevents video monitorinterference.

A high-order filter at 2.2kHz optimizesloudspeaker on-axis and off-axis response,helping to assure smooth octave-to-octavebalance and timbral accuracy. Gold-platedbinding posts accommodate heavy-gaugespeaker cable.

The S12 cabinet is constructed withacoustically inert medium-density fiber-board (MDF) walls to reduce cabinet-induced colorations. The rear of the cabi-net includes four keyholes for convenientwall-mounting which improves sonic per-formance and saves listening room space.

Since 1996, Revel has stood at the forefrontof loudspeaker design and performance.Backed by Harman International’s exten-sive research and design facilities, theRevel Concerta Series Loudspeakers benefitfrom cutting-edge development tools. Amulti-channel listening lab provides fordouble-blind listening tests. A laser inter-ferometer enables detailed driver and cabi-net analysis. Real anechoic chambers pro-vide for precise tests and measurements.

• Select the Monopole setting asshown in Figure 5 (right) to com-pensate for less than ideal speakerplacement, such as if the speaker ismounted in a corner of the listen-ing room.

• In Dipole mode, the driver pairs work out of phase to produce a “null” directly in front of the speak-er, which results in a diffuse disper-sion pattern, creating a large andenveloping soundfield. This modeis suitable for film soundtrackreproduction.

Select the Dipole setting, as shownin Figure 6 (right) to lessen yourears’ ability to locate the speaker tohelp create a sense of ambience.

See the Loudspeaker Placement/ModeConfiguration section beginning on page10 for more information.

CABINET

The trapezoidal shape of the cabinet con-tributes greatly to S12 performancebecause its design allows for the driverpairs to be at 72 degree angles to eachother to create the varying dispersionmodes. Cabinet-induced colorations arereduced with MDF walls.

The cabinet vinyl finish does not requireroutine maintenance. However, cabinetsurfaces that have been marked withfingerprints, dust, or other dirt can becleaned using a soft cloth. The cabinet alsoincludes an integral rear mounting systemfor direct wall placement. See the Wall-Mounting Instructions section on page 15.

Loudspeaker Placement/ModeConfiguration (continued)

CAUTIONHarman Specialty Group assumes noresponsibility for proper selection andinstallation of hardware or for anypersonal injuries or product damagesresulting from improper installation or afallen loudspeaker.

The S12 is designed to offer excellentperformance in any listening room orhome theater system. Its uniquely roundedtrapezoidal shape and angled pairs of driv-ers require specific placement and modeconfiguration considerations. Abide by thefollowing suggestions for optimal results.

For all system configurations, the S12sshould ideally be wall mounted at ear levelup to 15 degrees above ear level. Checksight lines to ensure that the primarylistening area is not obstructed by otherrows of seating.

Side/Surround Channels When mounted on a side wall as aside/surround speaker, one woofer andtweeter pair will be angled toward thefront of the room and the other woofer andtweeter will be angled toward the rear.

The bulleted items that begin below indi-cate important loudspeaker placement andconfiguration considerations for side or sur-round installations.

When using the S12(s) as the surroundchannels in a 5-, 6- or 7-channel hometheater:

• If using Bipole mode, the S12s shouldbe placed behind the primary listeninglocation, at an angle from 5 to 30degrees behind the listening position,as shown in Figure 8 (right).

• If there are several rows of seating, when using Bipole mode, place theS12s perpendicular to, or slightlybehind, the last row of seating.

NoteBipole mode provides a large ambient sur-round sound field while still allowing forprecise localization of musical and specialeffects placed in the tracks.

• Set to Monopole to compensate for lessthan ideal placement, such as if theS12 is mounted in the corner of thelistening room, or mounted less thanthree feet from the ceiling.

NoteMonopole mode permits exact localization of sound effects because onlyone set of drivers (which should be angledtoward the front of the room) are activat-ed. Many listeners prefer this mode forhigh-resolution SACD and DVD Audiomusic recordings.

• In Monopole mode, the S12s shouldideally be placed from 20 to 30 degreesbehind the primary listening positionas shown in Figure 9 (below).

• In Monopole mode, if there are severalrows of seating, place the speakersperpendicular to the middle row ofseating.

NoteThe set of drivers to the right of theMonopole setting indicator should beinstalled toward the front of the room asthis is the system that will be activated, asshown in Figure 10 (below). An S12 usedas a side channel mounted on the left wall(facing forward) must be mounted up-right. Conversely, an S12 on the right wallwould have to be inverted. This will ensureproper operation and performance if theMonopole mode is selected.

• In Dipole mode, if there is a single rowof listeners, the S12s should be placeddirectly to the listeners’ sides as shownin Figure 11 (below).

• In Dipole mode, if there are multiplerows of seating, the S12s should beplaced directly at the sides of the mid-dle of the listening area.

Note It may be desired to use the Dipolemode for film soundtracks as it creates awidely dispersed soundfield with limitedlocalization. Set to Dipole if you are usinga receiver/processor with a THX surround mode and have selected the THX surroundmode. This is a matter of personal prefer-ence and can change depending on theindividual film soundtrack. It is alsorecommended that the Dipole mode beused with older recordings that are onlyrecorded with a Dolby Pro Logic (not thenewer Dolby Digital) or DTS soundtrack.

Rear Channel(s)

The bulleted items that begin below indi-cate important S12 placement considera-tions for use as a rear speaker in 6- or 7-channel installations.

• If you are using a single S12 as a rearspeaker, it should be mounted up-righton the rear wall facing the listeningarea between the side channel speakersand directly in the center of the rearwall as shown in Figure 12 (below).

• When using two S12s as rear speakersin a 6- or 7-channel home theatersystem, the speakers should be mount-ed on the rear wall facing the front ofthe room between the side channelspeakers as shown in Figure 13 (page14). Each rear speaker should be placedabout one-third of the way into theroom.

Rear Channels (continued)

• When used in Bipole or Dipole mode, the rear channels should be placed atan angle from 20 to 30 degrees to thesides of the primary listening area asshown in Figure 13 (above). The excep-tion occurs in narrow rooms wheresuch an angle would result in place-ment too close to the side walls (lessthan 3 feet).

NoteWhen the S12 is used as part of a DolbyDigital or DTS multichannel home theatersystem, it is recommended that you set theside surround and rear surround (if pres-ent) to “small” or “high-pass.” In addi-tion, some receivers/processors allow youto adjust the high-pass frequency for the“small” or “high-pass” setting. If yourreceiver/processor has this capability, it isrecommended that you set the high-passfrequency to between 80Hz and 120Hz.Consult your receiver/processor owner’smanual for more information about theseadjustments.

Dual Rear Discrete ChannelsThe S12 possesses the unique ability tofunction as two distinct loudspeakershoused in one enclosure. This allows youto use a single S12 to function as both theleft and right rear (discrete) channels in a7-channel surround system.

The bulleted items below indicate impor-tant placement considerations for use of asingle S12 functioning as the left and rightrear channels in a 7-channel installation.

• Mount the S12 in the center of the rearwall facing the front wall as shown inFigure 14 (below).

• Set to Bipole. In this application, theS12 must be mounted up-right, directlyin the center of the rear wall. Use ofthe other dispersion modes for thisconfiguration would not allow forproper operation.

Refer to the Dual-speaker ModeConnections section beginning on page 17for instructions on connecting a single S12being used as dual rear or side/rear dis-crete channels.

Side and Rear Discrete ChannelsThe S12 also allows you to use a single S12to function as both side and rear (discrete)channels in a 7-channel surround system.

The bulleted items below indicate impor-tant placement considerations for use of asingle S12 functioning as side and rearchannels in a 7-channel installation.

• Mount the S12s on the side wall(s) fac-ing the opposite wall as shown inFigure 15 (below). Invert the S12 placedon the right wall.

• The S12s should be placed behind theprimary listening location, at an anglefrom 5 to 30 degrees. If there are multi-ple rows of seating, place them directlybehind the last row of seats.

• Set to Bipole. Use of the other disper-sion modes for this configurationwould not allow for proper operation.

NoteFor this configuration, if the S12s arelocated very close to the rear walls, placethe two S12s on the rear wall.

WALL-MOUNTINGINSTRUCTIONSThe S12 is designed for easy wall-mounting. The S12 features four rear key-holes, as shown in Figure 16 (above),which allow for either left- or right-sidewall placement (either up-right or invert-ed). The following tools are required for theinstallation:

2. For the S12 to be placed on the rightwall, connect one pair of loudspeakerwires to the top set of input connectors. Then, connect the same pair of loud-speaker wires to the right surroundamplifier output as shown in illustra-tion A in Figure 19 (right).

Keep in mind that the S12 placed onthe right wall will be inverted.

3. Connect one pair of loudspeaker wiresto the bottom set of input connectors. Then connect the same pair of loud-speaker wires to the right rear amplifieroutput as shown in illustration A inFigure 19 (right).

4. For the S12 to be placed on the leftwall, connect one pair of loudspeakerwires to the top set of input connectors. Then, connect the same pair of loud-speaker wires to the left surroundamplifier output as shown in illustra-tion B in Figure 19 (right).

5. Connect one pair of loudspeaker wiresto the bottom set of input connectors. Then connect the same pair of loud-speaker wires to the left rear amplifieroutput as shown in illustration B inFigure 19 (right).

NoteSet the Surround Mode Configurationcontrol to Bipole for proper operation.

OPTIMIZINGPERFORMANCETo optimize the S12 for best performance:

1. Set the Surround Mode Configurationcontrol to the appropriate position.Refer to the LoudspeakerPlacement/Mode Configuration sectionbeginning on page 10 for information.

2. Begin playback of a familiar music orfilm source.

3. Listen from the primary listeningposition, increasing volume to acomfortable level.

4. Experiment with the Surround ModeConfiguration controls (except wheneach S12 is configured to function astwo independent loudspeakers) todetermine the best setting(s) for yourhome theater installation, speakerplacement and listening materials.Determine what is best for your partic-ular system.

LOUDSPEAKER VOLUME LEVELS

High-order filters include steep cut-offs toreduce potential damage from “out-of-band” frequencies. Combined with carefullyselected transducers and filter networkcomponents, this approach helps the S12to maintain its performance underextreme operating conditions.

However, all loudspeakers have limitswhen it comes to continuous playback. Toextend these limits, avoid playback atvolume levels that distort or strain sound.

CAUTIONTo avoid damage, reduce volume levelimmediately if loudspeaker sound is notclean and clear.
