REVEALING THE CHAMPION

IN ALL OF US

A WARM WELCOMEWithin Special Olympics Florida we often talk about community -- a community

that believes in acceptance, inspires hope and celebrates each person’s unique

ability. Because of this, our athletes are able to achieve new heights, exhibiting

courage in the face of adversity.

In Florida, we are proud to serve a record 58,466 athletes across the state,

supported by 38,721 volunteers. When a competition ends, we celebrate the

discovery of courage, the friendship found in acceptance, and the advancement of

inclusive communities.

In 2022, Special Olympics Florida will celebrate 50 years of using sports to inspire

people to open their hearts to each individual’s talents and potential. We have

built a strong foundation, upon which our community continues to flourish. As a

culmination of this celebratory milestone, for the first time in history we will be

hosting the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games.

While I am proud to share that we continue to break records and stereotypes,

work remains. We are committed to serving even more people with intellectual

disabilities and providing access to critical social, health and wellness resources.

That is because ours is a community where each member is dedicated to an

athlete’s success on the field, at home, at school and in life.

Athlete, sibling, classmate, teacher, neighbor, or friend -- there is room for everyone.

In the spirit of gratitude,

Sherry WheelockPresident and CEOSpecial Olympics Florida

With year-round quality training and competitions in Olympic-type sports, athletes push hard and play harder. They strive to beat their personal bests, defying the odds again and again. From the local ball fields to the shining stage of State, Regional, USA, and World Games, our athletes showcase the talents and triumphs of people with intellectual disabilities.

BUILDING HEALTHY COMMUNITIESDespite severe need and higher health risks, people with intellectual disabilities are denied health services, have limited access to community health exams, and experience a lack of targeted health interventions and programs (World Health Organization, 2011).

Special Olympics Florida is working to strengthen the training and competitive experience of each athlete by promoting inclusive and healthy communities. The goal is to create an environment of dignity, while supporting the athlete’s health, fitness, and quality of life.

In just one year, Special Olympics Florida delivered the following critical services to athletes across the state:

PROMOTING YOUTH AND EDUCATION

Special Olympics may have started on the playing field, but today it is in full swing in classrooms across Florida. Using an education-based strategy, Unified Champion Schools use inclusive sports, youth leadership, and whole-school engagement to build and activate communities that embrace all abilities. Today, Special Olympics Florida is proud to be helping to shape a generation that pursues social inclusion daily.

• In 2019, Unified programs were active in 200 schools and on 17 college campuses.

• 97% of high school seniors say program activities are changing their school for the better.

• 84% of students generally regard participation in the program as a positive turning point in their lives.

• 86% of school staff feel the program has made a big impact in reducing bullying and teasing in their school.

• 96% of students feel comfortable carrying on a conversation with a student with intellectual disabilities.

FOCUSING ON EARLY CHILDHOOD

DEVELOPMENT

Young Athletes helps children ages 2 to 7 years old improve physically, cognitively, and socially through sports-play activities. Participating preschoolers with intellectual disabilities have achieved critical development goals at three times the rate of those not participating. For those with autism, the gains are nearly four times as great.

In 2019, there were 19,593 athletes and Unified partners participating in 51 counties and 300+ schools.

Promoting lifelong healthy habits, Healthy Kids at Play compliments Young Athletes by creating a culture of health for elementary-aged athletes. Children are introduced to healthy lifestyle choices, like eating nutritious foods, drinking plenty of water, moving regularly, and taking care of their bodies. As children become familiar with the concept of health at an early age, they will grow to lead strong and successful lives both on and off of the playing field.

“My child has exceeded my expectations! He is using all of his

learned social and motor skills, and I see major improvement in all.”Parent of Young Athletes participant

DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Athlete Leadership allows athletes to explore opportunities in roles previously considered non-traditional. A variety of leadership roles exists; whether serving as a coach, official, committee member, board member, or spokesperson, each experience provides lifelong leadership skills and the confidence to pursue self-sustaining careers as well as other life-fulfilling interests.

In 2020, Special Olympics Florida proudly launched its Athlete Leadership Academy. In this course-based leadership training, athletes find new opportunities to share their voice with their community. Offering five majors -- Communications, Governance, Sports, Finance and Employment -- athletes graduate ready to serve in meaningful leadership roles, influence change and ultimately create more inclusive communities around the world.

BE A FAN.GET INVOLVED!

Special Olympics athletes are given the opportunity to participate without regard to economic, demographic, religious, or social factors. Neither the athletes nor their families or caregivers are charged a fee to participate in the program.

Here’s how you can get involved:

Volunteer - Change an athlete’s life, as well as your own. No experience necessary; however, be ready to witness the transformative power of sports.

Mentor - Help athletes gain the skills and confidence they need to make a difference in their own life and their community.

Coach - No one affects the life of an athlete more than a coach. We will provide you the proper certified training in program policies, sports rules, and coaching techniques.

Sponsor - We rely on the generosity of individuals and corporate contributions.
