RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

What do Catholics believe about Jesus and his Church? How is it different from other Christian denominations?

What about Mary and saints and Sacraments? What's the deal with sin and confession?

What about heaven and hell and purgatory? What if I change my mind or decide I'm not ready?

We will be hosting an Open House on

Tuesday, August 27th from 7-8 PM in the

St. Hubert Meeting Room (2nd

floor)

to answer any questions you may have about

joining the Catholic Church as an adult.

Over the years, there have been an untold number of questions and objections raised about the Catholic Church’s teachings and practices.

The answers are there, and it’s worth your time to find them. G.K. Chesterton once wrote, “The difficulty in explaining 'why I am a

Catholic' is that there are ten thousand reasons all amounting to one reason:

that Catholicism is true.

Discover a beautiful faith in the Catholic Church. *For more information contact the parish office at 570-275-2512 or

SURVIVING DIVORCE*HOPE AND HEALING FOR CATHOLICS Surviving Divorce was created to bring hope and healing to those who have experienced the pain and loneliness of a broken marriage. It is for the newly separated and divorced and those still struggling with issues many years later. It will help them answer their questions, restore hope, and begin authentic healing. Developed and hosted by Rose Sweet, Surviving Divorce features experts on relationships and divorce as well as personal testimonies from Catholic men and women who have experienced the breakdown of their families. They courageously share their stories with heart, humor, and wisdom. As they witness to their pain and the healing power of Christ in their lives, participants will laugh, cry, and identify with their journeys from heartache to healing. Goals of the program:

Work through the emotional upheaval of separation and

divorce.

Find personal healing and hope.

Discover a deeper understanding of God’s love for you.

Gain wisdom and comfort from experts and others who

share your experiences.

Navigate new concerns like custody, court hearings, and

finances.

RANGER ROSARY MINISTRY will resume monthly maker meetings on Sunday, September 8th

th from 9:30 – 10:30 in

St. Hubert Hall (between the two morning masses). Returning members will check completed rosaries, make new rosaries and assemble rosary kits during this hour. The group meets the first Sunday of each month, September through May, and school age children are also welcome! For new comers, please join us at this time to learn about this ministry and how to make the specified rosaries. Ranger Rosary is a national organization which makes military approved rosaries for our service members. There are continuing requests for these rosaries from our military chaplains so the need is great. Our own Fr. Ignatius Madumere, serving now as a Marine chaplain, is one of them! Meanwhile, praying the rosary for our service members is most important so this is a ministry in which everyone can participate! For questions, please contact the parish office (570)275-2512 or Kim Burke at [email protected].

PLEASE PRAY FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS Please pray for Pastor Tilak and his family in India. Because he had been successful in leading 40 families to Christ, Hindu extremists captured him and tortured him, leaving him for dead. When the Christians brought him back to bury him, he began to move and they realized he was alive. Unfortunately, he and his family had to move to another part of the country to be safe, and for a year have been living with another family. They are impoverished and traumatized. BLOOMSBURG FAIR VESPERS It has been a long time tradition to open the Bloomsburg Fair with a church service on the evening before the Fair officially opens. The word “Vesper” means evening worship. The Vespers committee would like to invite our congregation to worship with them. The service will start with a hymn Sing led by “Raven Creek” a bluegrass gospel band led by Joe and Loraine Feola. Our committee is honored to have Dr. Doug Lyon, pastor of Shiloh Bible Church as the guest speaker. A free will offering will be received and the proceeds donated to the Veterans of the Orangeville Manor. Throughout the year, the Vespers committee plans and sponsors activities for the Veterans. We look forward to seeing you all at the 164th Bloomsburg Fair!

REFLECTION FOR OUR 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF ST. JOSEPH CHURCH “Sunday should also give the faithful an opportunity to devote themselves to works of mercy, charity and apostolate. . . . The Sunday Eucharist, therefore, not only does not absolve the faithful from the duties of charity, but on the contrary commits them even more ‘to all the works of charity, of mercy, of apostolic outreach.’” (Dies Domini, 69)

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Come celebrate the Day of the Lord by helping to prepare a Sunday meal for the Danville Area Ronald McDonald House. The St. Joseph Peace and Social Justice Committee is in need of many hands to bake, sauté, mix, chop, and write encouraging cards for the resident. “Within the ‘people of life and the people for life’, the family has a decisive responsibility. This responsibility flows from its very nature as a community of life and love, founded upon marriage, and from its mission to ‘guard, reveal and communicate love’ (The Gospel of Life, no. 92).

21st

Sunday in Ordinary Time 1. August 22

nd was our first day of school for our

students here at St. Joseph’s, as well as the Danville School District. Please keep our children and their teachers in prayer as they begin a new school year. May God’s grace be given to all in abundance!

2. A very deep and grateful thank you to all those who assisted with the parish festival in any way. A special thank you to Melissa Willoughby and the planning committee for all their efforts. It was indeed a tremendous success. I was so proud of our parish effort, although my waist line might take issue!

3. As part of my time of prayer each morning before the Blessed Sacrament I read a daily devotional entitled Jesus Calling by Sarah Young, written from an ecumenical Christian point of view. From time to time, I’d like to include a day’s devotion here (with the permission that is granted for excerpts quoted):

“When things seem to be going all wrong, stop and affirm your trust in Me. Calmly bring these matters to Me, and leave them in My capable hands. Then, simply do the next thing. Stay in touch with Me through thankful, trusting prayers, resting in My sovereign control. Rejoice in Me – exult in the God of your salvation! As you trust in me, I make your feet like the feet of a deer. I enable you to walk and make progress upon your high places of trouble, suffering, or responsibility.” See Job 13:15, Psalm 18:33, Habakkuk 3:17-19

God bless you and your week – Fr. Marcoe
