12th Annual Christian Legal Aid Pre-ConferenceThursday, October 20 | 9:00am – 3:30pm

After money, the most prevalent topic that is addressed in the Bible is the poor. Hundreds of verses cry out for justice for the poor. “The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.” Prov. 29:7. As lawyers, we have special training and abilities – and a duty – to demonstrate concern for the poor and helpless, and as Christians, we have a unique call to care about justice for the poor.

Join us for the 12th Annual Christian Legal Aid Leadership Training Seminar Pre-Conference. Whether you’ve served at one of the Christian legal aid clinics across the country for years or never served before, you will gain practical tools and training to provide both tangible legal help and transformative gospel hope. If you want to use your God-given skills to make an eternal difference, take this seminar to be encouraged, equipped and empowered to change your church and community for Christ.

This day-long seminar covers various areas of legal aid. The first session defines the needy and highlights the legal needs they face and addresses how you can use your unique skills to make a difference in the life of someone in need. The second session addresses the administrative tools needed to run an efficient and effective legal-aid ministry, a new network for assistance, and sources for answers as you go and grow. Session three explores different size organizations and various methods for raising funds, recruiting attorneys, involving support volunteers, integrating other ministries, and creating a vibrant community justice center. Session four is the essential primer on where to find resources for legal issues and training in common poverty areas including family, bankruptcy, immigration, housing and tax.

Bruce Strom, the founder and director of one of the largest and fastest growing Christian Legal Aid organizations in the country, Administer Justice, will lead the training. Administer Justice effectively equips more than 600 volunteers to make a difference in the lives of thousands of poor and needy in the Chicago area every year. Come and learn how you, too, can make an impact in your community.

Kim Colby will give an overview of the key religious liberty matters that have been advanced or hindered this year by the President, Congress, and Supreme Court. Topics will include faith-based organizations’ hiring rights; health care workers’ rights of conscience; RLUIPA; the Supreme Court’s consideration of the ministerial exception; ECFA’s Commission on Accountability and Policy for Religious Organizations formed in response to Senator Grassley’s report; public education initiatives; DOMA’s status; recent Supreme Court decisions regarding Establishment Clause standing, religious expression, and other religious liberty matters; and other substantive updates on current religious liberty topics.

Attorneys who accept the honor and responsibility of board participation likely will face a wide variety of expectations about one’s skills, expertise, and ability to contribute meaningfully. Legal Hotspots for Churches and Nonprofits for 2012 H. Robert Showers, Jr., Principal, Simms Showers, LLP

In the continuing specialized tax exempt arena where increasing IRS and state regulations and growing lawsuits/claims are putting pressure in a down economy, churches and nonprofits must prepare to survive and thrive. This fast-paced interactive CLE seminar is aimed not at tax exempt experts but at lawyers who practice in other areas but sit on the boards of these churches and nonprofits and its focus on the 10 top legal challenges seeks to sensitize them to the areas where the legal and tax threats are greatest and risk management is most needed.

Christian Mediation Track

Every Practitioner Needs Peacemaking 101Dave Schlachter, Vice President of the Institute of Christian Conciliation, Peacemaker MinistriesCandace McCune, Certified Christian Conciliator through Peacemaker Ministries

This workshop introduces the core principles of a biblical approach to conflict resolution which are essential for every lawyer in their daily practice. It will identify the core principles and provide insight into their practical application in the law practice. No matter what your area of law, size of your law office, or type of clients you represent, understanding the cause of conflict, how people respond to conflict, and how to address the conflict to achieve reconciliation and resolution will help you in your office, with clients, and at home.

Helping Business & Organization Clients Lead through ConflictDave Schlachter, Vice President of the Institute of Christian Conciliation, Peacemaker Ministries

Advising business & organizational clients includes helping them lead through conflict. This workshop will address the core principles of biblical conflict resolution with a specific focus on the conflicts that arise out of leadership. We will look at and apply biblical principles on conflict resolution which inform and direct leadership, particularly when leadership must manage change within their organization. You will learn practical skills to provide to clients, helping them avoid and constructively address the conflicts they encounter as leaders.

“Professional Courtesy” Falls ShortDave Schlachter, Vice President of the Institute of Christian Conciliation, Peacemaker Ministries

Resolving legal conflicts with professional courtesy is not enough. A faith based approach to practicing law calls for us to seek resolution with reconciliation. How do I do this; is it really possible? We will focus on the goal of achieving a lasting resolution of a conflict, through an understanding of how confession, followed by forgiveness, leads to reconciliation as the key to a durable resolution, preserving and restoring the relationships involved in the conflict. This workshop will provide practical tools for the litigation attorney as well as the business or family attorney helping their clients resolve their conflicts, and working with opposing counsel.

Science, Faith and the Public Square: Human Dignity and Medical ResearchJoal Hill, Director of Research Ethics, Advocate Health Care

This presentation will review historical and legislative developments in human subject research since the Nuremberg Code as a background for addressing the critical question

of what we understand science to be, particularly in an age when it is often asserted that religious, philosophical, and other values have no place in the practice of science. The goal of this workshop is to refute that notion by addressing the values that are inherent in science, particularly those of truth and trust.

Christian Legal Aid Track

Legal Aid Overview: You Were Created to Administer JusticeBruce Strom, Executive Director, Administer Justice

More than 2,000 verses in Scripture cry out for justice for the poor. By virtue of your profession you have unique gifts and a unique call to defend the rights of the poor and helpless. You have an opportunity to provide practical legal help and eternal gospel hope. Come explore how to overcome barriers to service through an exciting new initiative being launched which will provide all you need to make an eternal difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.

Jurisprudence Track

Idols for Destruction: The State, the Self, and Christian JurisprudenceJeff Ventrella, Senior Vice President, Alliance Defense Fund

Scripture informs us that we become like the idols we make (Ps. 135:18) and the same is true for jurisprudence. This session explores the relationship between Law, Lordship, and Liberty, and shows how the idols of State and Self are “idols for [our] own destruction.” (Hosea 8:4), which distort and undermine justice.

Higher Law and Common LawJeffrey Brauch, Dean, Regent University Law School

This presentation will trace the fundamental change in legal worldview that has taken place in the last 150 years or so. That change has been from believing in a transcendent source for law to skepticism of such a source. The presentation will address the implications of this worldview change for law and the Christian lawyer today.

Laws and Sausages: Christian faith, the legal profession, and the dirty business of politics. Gideon Strauss, Chief Executive Officer, Center for Public Justice

According to a saying usually attributed to Otto von Bismarck, if you want to respect either law or sausages, you should avoid seeing how they are made. We have all had our fill of lawyer jokes, and we know that politics evokes either apathy or cynicism from many of our fellow citizens. But for all the disdain in which law and politics is held, these overlapping arenas represent noble callings held in high regard both in the Christian Scriptures and through much of the history of the Christian faith. In this workshop, we will talk about ways of thinking about the practice of both law and politics, and their intersection, starting out from biblical first principles.

Ethics Track

In addition to the two-hour CLE workshop presented by legal humorist, Sean Carter, Dr. Dennis Hollinger will also be presenting two workshops on the subject.

Ethics in a Pluralistic ContextDr. Dennis Hollinger, President & Colman M. Mockler Distinguished Professor of Christian Ethics, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

We live in a pluralistic world in which discrepant worldviews and moral frameworks exist side by side. Various legal and ethical frameworks have been suggested for the pluralistic context. This workshop explores several of those frameworks and sets forth one particular approach that is rooted in biblical and theological understandings, and is contextually appropriate for the American setting.

Age-appropriate care is available for children ages 0-11. Rest assured that Kids’ Conference operates under Illinois state guidelines for age-divided space and child/worker ratios. Unfortunately, due to limited staffing, we will not be able to accommodate any children with special needs.

Located on-site at the Oak Brook Hills Marriott Resort, Kids’ Conference is available during each session of the conference. To adequately prepare for Kids’ Conference, pre-registration is required.

In order for childcare to be offered, a minimum participation is required. Childcare may be canceled if there are too few registrants. Notification and refunds will be issued for the childcare portion of the registration.

Professional/Ethics Day at the National ConferenceMany attorneys have sat under ethics programs which were either repetitive or, frankly, dull. CLS is pleased to open its Friday, October 21st Professionalism/Ethics day as a free-standing “conference within a conference” for those unable to attend the full conference. This allows local professionals to be exposed to CLS National Convention programming while receiving five solid hours of ethics credit qualified in all states with mandatory CLE requirements. Leading this off will be nationally-acclaimed Sean Carter, Harvard law grad and “humorist-at-law,” who has a unique talent for engaging both mind and funny bone. Dr. Dennis Hollinger, a specialist in this area, will present two graduate-level workshops on (a) ethics in a pluralistic context and (b) ethics and legal issues at the end of life. During the workshop periods, registrants can elect alternative CLE or non-CLE sessions from a robust menu of other conference offerings. Accordingly, this day will be of interest to attorney and non-attorneys alike. As “icing on the cake,” quite literally, registrants for the professionalism day will be allowed to purchase up to two tickets each for the Friday evening conference entertainment with professional comedian Jeff Allen followed by desert reception. These tickets will not generally be made available to the public.

Professional day with evening entertainment and reception is included in regular conference registration.Friday admission only: $95/attendeeAdd Conference entertainment by Jeff Allen & reception following: $25/ticket

Paralegal DayIn conjunction with the Professional/Ethics Day, CLS is offering at its annual conference a one-day program specially designed for paralegals! The Paralegal Program will be held on Friday, October 21st and offers a one day alternative for paralegals unable to attend the entire conference. Paralegals attending the Friday program will qualify for 5 NFPA credits. The cost of registration for the paralegal program will be $125. The program schedule combines events intended primarily for paralegals with events that are suitable for paralegals and attorneys alike:

10:00am to Noon: Ethics CLE Program by Legal Humorist Sean Carter, Esq. Noon to 1:30pm: Lunch Break 1:30 to 3:00pm: Choice of CLE Workshops 3:30 to 5:00pm: Paralegal Workshop (Integration of Faith and Work) 5:30 to 7:30pm: Dinner for Paralegals 8:00 to 9:30pm: Christian Comedian Jeff Allen with dessert reception to follow We are applying for 5 NFPA/NALA credits.

Paralegal Day only registration includes workshops, dinner and the evening comedian show with the dessert reception following. If you are a paralegal and you sign-up for full conference registration, this includes the full paralegal day program. Please indicate on registration that you are a paralegal and plan to attend the dinner.

Friday, October 21 | 8:00-9:30pmJeff Allen, Christian Comedian with Dessert Reception to followJeff Allen is the best at what he does–making people laugh as hard as humanly possible with clean funny jokes. His trademarked “Happy Wife, Happy Life” message of a marriage gone wrong and redeemed has given laughter and encouragement to millions of people. Jeff’s comedy drives home the humor in everyday family life and the joy derived from a healthy marriage.

Jeff AllenImagine a raging-alcoholic-turned-born-again-Christian funny enough to make you fall out of your chair, and moments later, so moving that you must reach for a Kleenex. “Jeff Allen is the best one-two punch in the Christian world,” says manager Lenny Sisselman. “He opens your heart and mind with hilarious, world-class comedy and then he gives his testimony of a near-ruined life redeemed by God. Nobody can do what he can do. If Jesus Christ returned to give a sermon, Jeff could open for Him.”

A dessert reception will follow the entertainment. This comedy show and reception is open to those with full conference registration or those who purchased the Jeff Allen show as an add-on to Professional Day.

9th Annual Christian Scholars’ SymposiumFriday, October 21 | 1:30-3:30pmJUSTICE, POVERTY, POLITICS & THE STATE: IS THERE A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE?with Jordan J. Ballor and Dr. Gideon Strauss

Scholars will gather again this year to discuss the role of the state and the church in addressing poverty and economic politics from a Christian perspective. What is responsible government action in light of the debt crisis and the plight of the poor, and how should a biblical understanding of the roles and relationship of the church, the family, and the state enlighten our policies and practices?

Jordan J. Ballor of the Acton Institute and Dr. Gideon Strauss of the Center for Public Justice have proven to be leaders in publicly discussing and debating these complex issues, and they will lead us in a dialogue on the topic.

Jordan J. Ballor is a research fellow at the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion & Liberty and serves as executive editor of the Journal of Markets & Morality. He is also author of Ecumenical Babel: Confusing Economic Ideology and the Church’s Social Witness (Christian’s Library Press, 2010). He is currently a doctoral candidate in Reformation history at the University of Zurich and in historical and moral theology at Calvin Theological Seminary.

Dr. Gideon Strauss is the CEO of the Center for Public Justice and editor of its publication Capital Commentary. Dr. Strauss was active in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa during his teens and twenties, and served as an interpreter for the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (http://www.justice.gov.za/trc/). He is married to Angela (a student at Fuller Theological Seminary) and father to Tala and Hannah (students at Gordon College). Gideon worships at Grace Pasadena (Presbyterian).

The Scholars’ Symposium is an annual offering designed to give law professors, students, lawyers and judges an opportunity to discuss scholarly topics and academic issues. The Scholars’ Symposium is free of charge to CLS conference registrants and is open to professors, students and practicing lawyers who desire to seek truth in their teaching, scholarship, and work.
