TO OUR PARISH FAMILY

Despite that we cannot celebrate Mass together at St. Mary, there is still much we can do! Let us

pray daily through the intercession of the Blessed Mother by praying the Rosary, the Memorare, or the Hail Holy Queen. Let us keep our faith and

trust in the LORD who is always with us and will never abandon us! Deuteronomy 31:6

Dear parishioners, These last few weeks have been uniquely challenging in our daily lives here in America and in the world. The outbreak of the Corona Virus pandemic has left us deeply troubled. But, despite this uncertainty, we have to remember that the LORD is with us and He will never abandon us. Many of us are facing not only physical and living challenges because of the virus, but financial ones as well. Our situation at St. Mary is not any different. Our expenses at St. Mary are ongoing, just as they would be at your home and in your family. To that end, I am humbly urging you to continue your support of our church during this time despite the fact that there will be no Masses held for at least the next few weeks. We will diminish our reserve funds if we do not have your ongoing support. We have three options that you might consider:

1. Parish Giving: This is our church’s online giving provider. It is offered to you free of charge. You have the ability to make one time contributions or make recurring contributions. You can select your billing date and can use a credit card or bank transfer. The link to start can be found on our website (stmarycherryhill.org) by clicking onto the button, “Donate Online”.

2. Mail in your donation: You can mail in your donation to the Parish office. Our mailing address is: The Catholic Church of St. Mary, 2001 Springdale Rd., Cherry Hill, NJ 08003

3. Drop off your donation: Our Religious Education door has a mail slot. If you decide to drop off your donation, please clearly mark your envelope PARISH COLLECTION. Please do not put any donations in the Parish office mailbox.

I thank you, as always, for your great love of God and His church. You are all in my prayers and please remember me in yours as well!

Fr. Paul

As Catholics, we are encouraged to receive Holy Communion devoutly and frequently.

Frequent reception of Holy Communion was not always the norm. It wasn’t until 1905, under Pope Pius X, that Holy Communion was encouraged to be received frequently. Be-fore that, holy men and women of the church denied them-selves Holy Communion because they believed they were unworthy of such a gift—that the Lord Jesus would come to them, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. We should receive the Blessed Sacrament as often as we can so that we can be intimately united with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. But, we should ensure that we are properly disposed to receive Him, our God. If we are aware of a seri-ous sin on our soul (a mortal sin), then we should refrain from receiving Holy Communion until we receive the Sacra-ment of Penance and confess our sin. It is a sacrilege, a sin against God, to knowingly go before the altar and receive Jesus with a mortal sin on your soul. Fasting for one hour before reception of Holy Communion is a requirement. Why? We know that Jesus fasted in the desert before He set out on His public ministry. He gained the strength He needed to complete His mission and suffer the crucifixion for each one of us. So too must each of us prac-tice fasting so that we may gain spiritual strength to carry out our mission on this earth. Prior to 1964, the fast was three hours and before 1957, it was from midnight the night before Mass. The Church asks us to refrain from food and drink (except water) for one hour and we should make a conscious effort to do this each day we receive Holy Communion. It helps us prepare and think about the moment when we will receive Our Lord sacramentally. It also helps us to practice discipline, which we need to lead a good moral life. As we approach to receive Jesus, we should be careful in the manner in which we receive. After showing a sign of rever-ence (a bow in our diocese), we should receive Holy Com-munion reverently on our tongue (the norm in the church) or in our hand, provided our hands are clean and we ensure that we can safely receive the Blessed Sacrament without drop-ping any particles of the host. Jesus is present in every parti-cle of Holy Communion, no matter how small the particle is. We should consume the host before moving and, if we are carrying a child, should always receive on the tongue. How long is Jesus present in the Eucharist after we receive Him? The Catechism tells us that “the Eucharistic presence of Christ begins at the moment of the consecration and en-dures as long as the Eucharistic species subsist.” That means that until your body digests the host, Jesus is physically pre-sent in our bodies. We should ensure that the 15 minutes fol-lowing reception of the Eucharist is spent in prayer and thanksgiving that Jesus comes to us in such a special way!
