A strange phenomenon is happening in American culture. Our nation is becoming
both more spiritual and more secular at the same time. Alongside these changes, the church is
both growing and shrinking among Americans. You might be thinking to yourself, “Come on,
Luther…really? Growing and shrinking? More spiritual and more secular?” To which I will
answer emphatically, “Yep! Exactly!”
Allow me to explain. I will start with the church. How can the church grow and
shrink simultaneously? Right now, churches committed to biblical doctrine, passionate
worship, strategic discipleship, and authentic service to the surrounding community are
growing and growing rapidly. These churches are committed to the gospel both as a body of
believers and individuals. They teach that the gospel is a call to follow Christ in daily life. They
communicate the teachings of scripture in language that people can understand without
compromising the call to emulate Jesus. The worship is meaningful, passionate, and heartfelt.
These churches help people understand what it means to walk with God in daily life.
On the other hand, there are large segments of the Christian church that are
shrinking. These churches are witnessing a mass exodus of people of all ages, not just their
younger generations. The churches that are shrinking are often committed far more to their
traditions and their history than they are to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ in love and
ministry. They blame the deteriorating culture on the decline of the church instead of their
unwillingness to move out of their comfort zone. These churches value rituals and highly
organized worship. For these reasons, and many others, these churches are hanging by a
thread.
This movement in the church is impacting our overall culture and explains the other
changes taking place. As people depart from the declining churches, they are going in one of
two directions: either they move to one of the growing churches or they leave the church
altogether. And this is happening in virtual tidal waves of people. Hence, large numbers of
people are departing churches with a dead spirituality and finding renewal and revival in
churches that are serious about following Christ. And, at the same time, large numbers of
people have become jaded by the dead spirituality of dead churches and giving up on
Christianity. The result: a polarization of our nation that is both more spiritual and more
secular at the same time, an American Church that is both shrinking and growing.
What does this mean for Northside? That’s the question for you and me.
See You Sunday,
Luther

I know you’ve been resting and just sitting around the house bored and listless all winter, haven’t you? Getting tired of watching reruns yet? Spring has sprung and we just so happen to have the cure for that boredom problem you’re suffering from! Upcoming events that we are looking forward to participating in include:
April 11th: Wounded Warriors Breakfast that we will help cook and deliver out to Wyndham at Bay Point. May 1-5: Thunder Beach. Still pondering ideas for this one… May 17-19: Women of Bethel Village beach retreat at Laguna Beach Christian retreat. We’ll be providing a few meals and/or snacks. Apr 4th, May 2nd, June 6th: (first Thursday of each month): Serving supper at the PC Rescue Mission from 4 - 6:00pm. April 13th: Baptist Center work day. There is enough going on at Northside to keep anyone who wants to join in the work busy for as long as they’d like. You can start out easy and ramp it up to whatever level you are comfortable with. I would imagine if you asked any of the staff if there were something you could do, not only would they be shocked but you can rest assured that your skills would be put to good use blessing others. Matthew 28:19-20 tells us that we are tasked with a Great Commission to go on a mission. That mission could be as close as your next-door neighbor, your co-worker, or on the other side of the world. Come join us and let’s do some of that God sized math where our efforts are exponentially multiplied as only He can do. Disciples making disciples who in turn make more disciples! Who knows how many we can reach if we all pitch in!
And as always, thanks to all who have provided prayer, guidance, labor, and funding to help make the mission effort at Northside such a joy to lead. Please feel free to contact me with ideas, questions or concerns at [email protected] or give me a call at 819-9106. After all, we are in this together and the more the merrier!
