August is already half over! For many families, that means school is just around the corner! Shopping for school supplies, books, and fall clothes becomes a part of everyone's schedule. Here at First Presbyterian Church of Plymouth, we want to celebrate and bless the beginning of another school year. Students, Pre-K through 5th grade, are invited to bring their backpacks to the 9:00 or 10:30/10:35 service on Sunday, Sept. 10th. During each service we will lift up our wonderful elementary students and their backpacks, dedicating them to God's glory as we begin a new school year. Teachers, both in the church and in our schools, principals, administrators, secretaries, cooks, librarians, janitors, and bus drivers…come to church to be blessed as well, affirmed in your vocation, and encouraged as you serve children and families in your daily work!

CLUB 45 A new addition to our Family Ministry will be Club 45. Those who are in 4th and 5th grade will be invited to attend special fun events as

PARENT/GUARDIAN MEETINGS FOR SEPT. 10TH

9 -10am Confirmation Meeting for parents of 8th grade students who will be participating in the 2017-18 confirmation class. Students during their 8th grade year or older will explore the answers to the toughest questions about Christian faith. We're meeting with parents/guardians only on September 10th at 9am and look forward to our first class with the students on September 17th at 9am! 10-10:30am Nursery - Elementary Meeting for parents of nursery through 5th grade children who will be participating in any ministries including Sunday School on Sunday mornings and the Bridge on Wednesday evenings 10:30-11:30am Middle School and High School Meeting for parents of students from 6-12th grade who will be participating in any programming for this age group. Parents of Confirmation students will also want to attend this meeting in order to be informed of all activities available in addition to the confirmation process.

Join us as we engage in worship, fellowship, and spiritual growth on Sunday mornings at 10:30 in the High School Room. New, starting this year, we are launching High School Life Groups throughout the week; Sunday nights, Wednesday nights, and Thursday nights at various locations. Life Groups are small groups taken to the next level. Students will engage in the study of God’s Word as the core, but experience relationships with other peers and Life Group leaders in a community that is encouraged to experience life together. We also meet on Wednesday evening from 6:15-7:30 (optional dinner at 5:45) as we navigate life and middle school together. This Bible study is for women of all ages and is structured to meet once a week for 10 consecutive sessions. We will look at the spiritual lessons learned from ten women in the Bible and what they mean for us today. You will look at these women’s successes and failures, see how they drew near to God in the midst of trials, and learn how they overcame rejection and disappointment. Their stories will inspire us to persevere through difficult times and find joy in the hope that Jesus has provided. This 10-week Study Guide provides reflective questions to be answered between sessions. A DVD lesson is shown in class each week with small group discussion to follow. Life Long Learning Classes Program Overview God intends for all believers to embark on a faith journey that lasts throughout their lifetimes. In order to grow in faith, all Christians are called to model their lives after the example of Jesus Christ. Only through worship, service, prayer, fellowship, and study in a community of faith can the people of God live out their calling. In our busy, prosperous community, we all have many demands on our time and energy. In the face of these demands, we each strive to look within our hearts, through reflection and prayer, and honestly determine how we are growing in faith. We are called to ask, “Where in the list of priorities is my relationship with God?”

Ministry Focus In order to serve God, the congregation, and our world partners, the Christian Nurture Committee of our Church has worked to develop diverse, creative and attractive programs. These programs emphasize the study of Scripture, fellowship and personal faith development. The mission of FPCP of nurture and education is to:

• Offer every member and visitor opportunities to continue in their faith journey; • Actively reach out to every member and visitor and seek to engage them in ministry according to their

God-given gifts and talents; • Dialogue with ministers, congregation, community, and our world partners to create new programs,

classes, and groups to engage in a broad-based effort to bring the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ into the lives of all people.

If you do not find what you are looking for, please let us know. What can the church do to involve you in active participation in Bible study and small group ministry? Is there a time of day or day of the week that would work better for you? Is there a topic that interests you that we are not offering? We plan to continue offering childcare for as many mornings and evenings programs as possible. Please let us know if lack of childcare prevents you from participating. We also understand that driving at night is a concern for some of you. Please keep in mind that worship is where we put into practice what we learn in Bible study and small groups. Worship is the life of the church and essentially the only place where the entire body comes together. Please do not substitute education or nurture clas-ses for worship. We all really need both.

providing a Spanish Bible in an easy to understand translation to each child living at Colina de Luz Christian Home for Chil-dren in Mexico. These Bibles will help each child to know Christ and pursue a personal relationship with Him. The gift of the Word is invaluable!

Calling All Gardeners (and shoppers!) Once again we have the opportunity to help families within our community by donating fresh fruits and vegetables to Northville Civic Concern. If your garden has an abundant crop, please consider sharing. Whatever you bring in and leave on the produce stand in the Narthex will be delivered to Civic Concern. Each week they donate groceries and produce to local families that may otherwise go without. If you do not have a garden but would like to contribute, store bought produce is also accepted. The Local Mission committee is so thankful for your generosity. We will be collecting produce through the end of September.

On the evening of Monday, September 11, the FPCP Caregiver Support Group is sponsoring an

informative evening on Alzheimer’s Disease. According the website for the Alzheimer’s Association,

five million Americans are currently living with this form of dementia. This number is expected to

triple in the next thirty years. All friends and members of FPCP are invited to attend this meeting to

become better acquainted with symptoms, treatment and family resources.

Laty Walker, a friend of FPCP member Heidi Herr, will be speaking about her personal experiences

caring for her mother, while a representative of the local Alzheimer’s Association will be present to

share information about symptoms and family resources.

This meeting will be held in the FPCP dining room from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. If you have any

Darlene Maginley has accepted an appointment as Interim Director of Children’s Ministries, effective Monday, August 7. The 20 hours-per-week position opened with the resignation of Victoria Barkoff as Director of Children’s Ministries, effective July 31, following five years of service to FPCP. The Interim Director of Children’s Ministries coordinates, participates in, and oversees all aspects of young children’s programs, infant through grade 5. The interim director helps develop the calendar and yearly budget for Christian Nurture, maintains Sunday School registration, recruits Sunday School teachers and executes teacher training. The interim director writes articles for the bulletin, coordinates children’s mission projects with the mission committees and plans special events to include children in worship. In addition, the interim director integrates music in the Sunday School, and attends staff meetings, Family Ministry team meetings, Christian Nurture committee meetings, as well as the mid-week Bridge program. The position supervises the Young Child Care Coordinator. Newly added to the position description for 2018, the interim director directs the Vacation Bible School (VBS). Darlene, along with her husband Matt and their daughter Claire, has been active in church life since the Maginleys became members of FPCP. Darlene earned her BS in Education from Indiana State University and taught pre-school for several years. At FPCP, she has taught Sunday School, and pre-school classes in Vacation Bible School and Bridge. She is a Deacon, co-coordinator of FPCP’s Prayer Shawl Ministry Group and a long-time member of the church’s Hand Bell Choir. A regional, expanded search will begin shortly to identify a permanent Director of Children’s Ministries, a 20 hours-per- week position.
