Through The Eyes Jim, Thank you for taking the time to talk with me on Friday. I am excited and honored about the
possibility of the “through the eyes” exhibit being a part of the reunion in Vegas.
I was a member B Co 3/503rd 173d Airborne Brigade (SEP) until we were deployed to An Khe. I
went to the jungle school, given a blooper and ended up humping the mountains of the highlands. I was
promoted / demoted to an assistant gunner and then given the rock and roll monster. I early December I
was injured during a mortar attack and returned to Camp Radcliff. While recovering me spent most of my
time drawing sketches of the men and the war. My work was seen by an officer and I was offered a job as
a combat artist. My profile would not allow me to return to the field as an 11 bravo.
I was glad to be out of the fight but hated the politics and remps of the rear area. I began to feel
that I had abandoned my buddies and complained a lot to my NCOIC. He soon became sick of my
bitching. I came in one morning and was asked if I still wanted to return to the field. I found a camera on
my desk and was told I was promoted to combat photographer.
From December 67 to December 68 I traveled all over the Nam to all of the battalions and support
units recording the men, missions and stories of the war. I made over 50 combat assaults and encountered
the Vietnamese enemies as well as the bugs, agent orange, monsoon, rage, guilt and pretty much being a
loner.
On 2 September 1999 I created “through the eyes”, a non-profit Vietnam exhibit. The exhibit
started with one table of photographs and a few collected pieces of memorabilia. Since then I have taken
the exhibit to forty-nine states, Canada and Vietnam. I have been to over 320 venues from the 20th
anniversary of the Wall in DC to high schools in small town America. The exhibit now has 45 display
cases, 2000 photographs and 3000 pieces of memorabilia, equipment, uniforms, and weapons (non
function or replicas).
The exhibit is designed as a walk through display. It is family friendly with no blood and guts. It is
primarily focused on the 173rd and United States Army. This is because that is what I knew and did. The
exhibit has an educational program that is presented to the public and educational institutions from grade
school to university students. An oral presentation has been developed to share the humor, horror and
brotherhood of the war and coming home.
The exhibit also is supported by providing all that it needs. This includes tables / table cloths,
lighting, electrical, audio, visual, tents, display boxes and handouts. A complete indoor presentation
could be set up in an area about the same size. This would include our mini theater with 300
documentaries, movies, and interviews about Vietnam.
Our goal is to both present and explain the many aspects of Vietnam and the men and women
whom served. It has a magic that arrives with the veterans, families and guests. Before long you can hear
the conversation turn to statements like “I forgot about those”, “do you remember?”, “welcome home”.
The sounds of laughing, crying, and mini reunions fill the exhibit. Unconsciously these actions are joined
with the feeling of healing, closure and understanding that we were, and are not alone.
We find ourselves giving away many of the framed photographs to the veterans. More than you
can imagine, herd guys will find a picture of themselves, their buddies or their fire support base. The love
and looks on their faces when I take a framed and matted photograph off of the wall, hand it to them
saying welcome home is payment enough.
We sell nothing and do not charge any fees for the exhibit. We do put out a donation jar with a
sign that reads “your donations are the only funds for the upkeep, maintenance and continued travel for
the exhibit – thank you
I look forward to meeting you all in Vegas - Airborne John F Hosier
