WE WELCOME VINI FRIZZO The Director of Music Ministries Search Committee is pleased

to announce the selection of Carlo Vincetti (Vini) Frizzo as our new

Director. He is graduating with a doctorate in choral conducting and

composition from Indiana University. He holds a BA in keyboard

studies and French from Murray State University and a Master of

Music in composition from Louisiana State University. Prior to

beginning doctoral studies, he taught music theory and composition

at Sam Houston State University. He has served as music director for

the past five years at First United Church in Bloomington, Indiana,

where he conducted the adult choir and hand bell choir. During his

doctoral studies he has conducted various ensembles including

chamber works, operas, symphonies, and a cappella groups. He has

also won several awards in composition including the American

Prize in Composition for Light/Pop music.

He brings a wealth of experience, great energy, and contagious enthusiasm to his conducting. In his

letter of application, he wrote: “I firmly believe that music is a way to bring people together. The church

choir fosters a sense of fellowship and allows its members to have a feeling of ‘giving back’ by providing the

worship service an additional layer of beauty and meaning.” He believes that “music is a conduit to the

divine” and welcomes all who want to come and share in the joy of making music.

Vini, his wife Ashley, and their daughter Jo-bug are excited about moving to Louisville and becoming

part of the HPC family. They will be arriving in early August, and Vini will begin with the Chancel Choir

rehearsal on August 15 and worship on August 18. He will also be conducting the Alpha and Omega Choirs,

beginning with their rehearsals on August 18.

I am very excited about welcoming Vini to Highland and am deeply grateful to the Search Committee

for their careful and dedicated work throughout the months of this search. Please join me in thanking Carol

Pye, chair; Viola Blackwell, David Gambrell, Bill Grubbs, Bill McConnell, Beth Seeger Troy, and JoAnn Utter

for their service.

Joke Club We often receive funny notes/comments in the red pew-pads during worship and thought it’d be fun to share some with you all! What does a pepper do when it’s angry?

It gets jalapeño face!

Why was six scared of seven? Because seven "ate" nine.

Highland Presbyterian Church Summer Trips

High School Montreat On June 8th-15th, 17 youth and 6 adults went to High School Montreat for the High School Youth Conference! The theme was “Let Love Lead.” For the week, we explored what our lives would look like (and how they might change) if we allowed love to lead us in our relationships with our neighbors and our friends. We explored how love might lead us as we care for the world and for one another. We also celebrated HPC youth Kaylee Tribolet and Olivia Wagner being on the planning team for the conference! Thanks so much to Amanda Boyd, Kevin Burns, Kimberlee Burns, Steve Holmes, and Jeff Wagner for chaperoning.

Worship and Music Conference From June 23rd – 29th, Highland took an intergenerational group of 2 children, 4 youth, and 5 adults to participate in the Presbyterian Association of Musicians (PAM) conference at Montreat! The theme for the week was “Not as the World Gives.” Throughout the week, we explored the theme of peace in worship, music, art, and other activities. Participants got to sing in choirs, play drums, create art, and attend theological and biblical classes. In the evenings, we enjoyed a hymn faculty showcase, chamber choir performances (Edward Caruthers and Lydia Thomas made the auditioned chamber choirs), a final concert, ice cream, hiking, and laughter. Thanks so much to Carol Pye and Doodle Harris who were on the planning team for the conference. Also, thanks to Amanda Boyd, Kimberlee Burns, Edward Caruthers, and Beth Troy for chaperoning.

Triennium From July 15th-19th, 8 Highland youth and Doodle joined with other youth and adults from Mid-Kentucky Presbytery to attend the Presbyterian Youth Triennium at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The theme of the conference was “Here’s my Heart” and throughout the conference, we discussed themes presented in the hymn “Come Thou Font of Every Blessing.” In total, there were over 4,000 participants in the largest gathering of Presbyterian Youth from around the country and around the world. We got to explore worship, mission, recreation, and small groups with youth from so many different places and perspectives. We also got to enjoy David Gambrell’s preaching and Clara Harper on the drama team.

Middle School Montreat On June 17th-21st, 15 middle schoolers and 3 adults went to the Middle School Montreat Conference in Maryville, Tennessee. The theme was “For Such a Time as This.” Participants walked through the book of Esther exploring ideas of inclusion, courage, and advocacy in their faith. Our youth especially enjoyed the recreation and the worship times together this week! Special thanks to Kevin Burns, Kelli Klingenfus, and Becky Slagle for chaperoning.

Vacation Bible School Thanks to almost 50 volunteers and 71 participants for a wonderful week of Vacation Bible School July 8th-11th! Our theme for this year was “Magical Mystery Tour” and we explored stories of miracles in the Bible – some performed by Jesus and some through Old Testament prophets. We explored through art, recreation, science, and “mystery time” how we were miracles as well. The rising 4th-6th graders also did afternoon service projects with Centerstone, OWLS, the Burrito Riders, “The Table,” and Portland Avenue Community Trust. So much thanks to the children’s committee for organizing and running such an exciting 4 days!

STITCH News The week of July 8-12, volunteers from STITCH sponsored a sewing camp for teen-age girls, who were part of the KRM summer program for youth. These 10 girls were from Nepal, Congo, and Rwanda. They spent the week learning basic sewing skills and then making lined tote bags, pillow cases, stuffed animals, pillow pals, and a zippered cross-body purse. In addition, several of the girls brought some of their own clothing that needed to be altered, shortened or modified in some way. At the end of the week, eight of the girls, who showed an interest and a talent for sewing, were given a sewing machine to take home. They also were given a bag of basic sewing notions to have for their next sewing project!

Children’s Announcements Children’s Sunday School

Children’s Sunday School classes will begin on August 18th with Rally Day in the Sanctuary at 9:30 followed by a time for classes and teachers to get together! Each Sunday School class will meet on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:30. We are still looking for a few more Sunday School Teachers! If you are available and willing, please let Ann Holmes know! Here are our classes for the Fall:

Preschool (3-year-olds and 4-year-olds) – meet in the Children’s Wing on the first room on the left! Kindergarten Class – Meet in Ms. Walker’s Class (the room at the end of the hall in the Children’s Wing) 1st and 2nd graders – Meet in the Chapel (first room on the right at the top of the stairs in the Children’s

Wing) 3rd graders – Meet in the Adult Education Wing (in Pleune-Mobley Building; First Floor) in the classroom

across from the kitchen (Next to the Session Room). 4th and 5th graders – Meet in the Youth Wing (in Pleune-Mobley Building; 2nd Floor) in Classroom #1.

Parents, 3rd-5th grade children will be walked back to the Fellowship Hall at the conclusion of Sunday School each week. Parents should plan to go to the Children’s Wing to pick up children in the Preschool, Kindergarten, and 1st-2nd grade class.

Big Wheels This is a fellowship opportunity for all children and families! We’ll be in the church parking lot (which has been partially roped off) from 10:00-12:00 on Monday, September 2nd (Labor Day). Bring your bikes, roller blades, wagons, scooters, strollers, or anything else that rolls, to the parking lot! We’ll also have snacks and chalk available for more fun ! We may even get lunch together after the event! Don’t forget to bring your “soccer” chairs for a place to sit.

Roots This is our group that meets on Sunday afternoons in the Fall for current 3rd-5th graders! This group is primarily for fellowship and service as these children continue to grow the “roots” of their faith. This is where we begin to “dig deep” into some of issues of social justice and communi-ty. Roots doesn’t exist to replace Sunday School because Sunday School is where we focus on theological and Biblical teachings! However, Roots helps us experience tangible ways to live into some of the ways that God calls us to be the body of Christ in this world. Roots meets most weeks from 3:30-4:45. Roots will begin Sunday afternoon, August 25th for get-to-know you games and group building activi-ties at 3:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Also on August 25th, we’ll have a parents meeting for Roots from 3:00-3:30 just before Roots begins. Please try to attend this Parents meeting if your child(ren) plan to participate in Roots.

August is always an exciting month for the Nursery & Weekday School. We wrap up our summer projects and begin to gear up for a new school year, a new beginning. There’s something magical about a new beginning; it’s a clean slate that holds such hope and promise, such potential for growth and development in our school, in the children and families we serve, and in ourselves. Soon, many families will return to the halls of the Walker-Nevin Building, excited for another year of relationships and experiences they have grown to love, and they’ll be joined by many new families, too, eager to find their place in our community and experience the nurturing support of Highland Pres. We look forward to the sounds of children, families and faculty in our hallways, to perpetuating the message we weave throughout our program: we support you, we celebrate you, we respect you, you belong.
