IN 2013 a group of friends and colleagues who live with diabetes co-‐created a self-‐care retreat week-‐end for themselves and other women living with diabetes in order to spend time in a peaceful natural setting away from the hustle and bustle of life’s demands. The retreat experience was developed to share diabetes wisdom through holistic health & wellness guidance, creative activities, quiet contemplation, peer support and encouragement to fearlessly discover who we are and what we are capable of as women living with diabetes.
THE ANNUAL WISE WOMEN OF DIABETES RETREAT is designed to help a woman with diabetes choose healthy self-‐care strategies that can easily be incorporated into her personal life. We learn about: mind-‐body awareness through various forms of energizing activities such as tai chi, yoga, and creative dance; making balanced nutritional food choices for healthy eating; and practicing mindfulness techniques for stress reduction, artistic expression, and self-‐healing. The retreat offers dynamic diabetes self-‐management education and peer support in a unique model that promotes self-‐discovery, -‐awareness, -‐respect, and -‐empowerment.
THE RETREAT FACILITATORS include accomplished health professionals from the fields of nursing, dietetics & nutrition, art therapy, exercise & fitness, and psychotherapy, many of whom are Certified Diabetes Educators. One thing all presenters have in common is that they live with diabetes themselves and "walk their talk" whether they have Type 1, Type 2, Pre-‐diabetes, Insulin Resistance, or LADA.
DURING THE RETREAT participants will learn, grow, and gain insights for self-‐care through meaningful discussions, diabetes wisdom sharing, and hands-‐on activities. Each woman can expect to experience a sense of renewal and delight in a beautiful setting of stillness that takes her to a deeper connection with nature, her diabetes sisters, and the strength within herself.
