architecture
Stroud Cohousing
ArchiHaus purpose:
to transform the quality and
sustainability of UK housing
The housing challenge
• much new housing is of poor design quality
• built to very poor energy standards
• suburban and uninspiring in layout
• lacking in any sense of community and place
Our vision
• higher standard of sustainability
• better quality of design and construction
• at a price that is affordable• i.e. at the same price as developers
• address skills, training and employment
Our target
• Passivhaus as standard heating costs reduced to £50/year
• quality as standard– quality assured construction process
• affordability as standard– i.e. for ordinary people not luxury market
What is Passivhaus ?
• a rigorous energy standard
• a rigorous comfort standard
• a rigorous evidence based standard
• a rigorous quality assurance standard
Our strategy
• to rethink the design of the house
• to rethink the design of the site
• to rethink the process of construction

Planning
Received strong recommendation for approval from officers:
“This is an innovative development proposal that is a radical and positive departure from conventional modern housing developments.
The development will also maintain and enhance the vitality and harmony of the community.
The environmental sustainability of the buildings in particular is exemplar and would set the benchmark for other developments both within the county and elsewhere to follow.”
