WELCOME

Founded in 1959, Institut Teknologi Bandung or Bandung Institute of

Technology is the oldest higher education in technology and engineering

in the Archipelago with more 22.000 students drawn from 12 faculties.

Committed to lead changes toward the prosperity of Indonesia and the

world, the State awarded ITB as Indonesia’s Best Technological

University based on the quality of human resources, organizational

management, student activities, and research.

Being a business and management school within a technological

university, we provide a forward-thinking journey where business

embraces technology. Established in 2003, SBM-ITB is young but highly

respected, accentuating service excellence and creative learning system

to grow together for the greater good.

Recently awarded as Indonesia’s Best Business School by Global Brand

Magazine UK, we demand leaders with ability to drive Asian businesses

to the forefront of world economy. We believe with our academic and

research accomplishments, strong alumni support, community

engagement and innovative executive education, we could continue to

make positive impact on current and future business leaders.

RETHINK.

REDESIGN.

REBORN.

It is an undeniable fact that the world is changing so rapidly. Our advancement in

technology is at the point of no return and will only continue to improve so that we

don’t know yet how different our lives will be years from now. The biggest market

capitalization has shifted from the oil and gas and the finance industries to the

Tech giants. In 2017, Dell released its report on the next era of human-machine

partnerships, finding that 85% jobs in 2030 have not even been invented yet. Just

like in Indonesia, where a few years ago, a profession of an online transportation’s

driver was unknown. Embracing the era of the unknown and how to deal with it,

we choose “Rethink, Redesign, Reborn” as our campaign theme for 2018.

At SBM ITB, we challenge you to love the unknown a little bit more. We want you

to look around and think, what triggers your rush of love for humanity? Whose

lives is it that you want to make more comfortable? You might not know what to do

yet, you might not have the professional track record or right educational

background to do it, or you might not know what the available tools are,

nevertheless, be fearless to embrace the unknown and begin to innovate.

Releasing yourself from the idea of having a perfect track record will expose you

to experiencing and experimenting different things. In this era, mistake is your

friend since the ability to gain new knowledge will be more valuable than the

knowledge itself in this era.

The challenges of tomorrow will be different with the challenge of today. What is

assured is the need to equip yourself with various multi-disciplinary skills and

experiences, because that is what the world needs now since there seems to be

no single problem that can be answered using one discipline anymore. Just take

the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as eliminating poverty, reducing

inequality, and climate action. Not a single SDG encompasses only one sector or

one academic discipline, rather all the goals require approaching problems from

multidisciplinary perspectives.

If the challenges above excite you, we welcome you to join us in rethinking,

redesigning, and being reborn for the greater good in the future.

WHAT’S NEW?

Global Brands Magazine (GBM)

is an international-scale

marketing magazine that reviews

many brands of products ranging

from food, lifestyle, finance, and

technology. Headquartered in

the UK, this magazine annually

holds awards. In 2017, the

Global Brands Awards awarded

Institut Teknologi Bandung as

the Indonesia’s Best University

for Technology and SBM ITB as

the Best Business School in

Indonesia.

Assessment aspects were based

on service, performance, and

branding. The assessment was

submitted by GBM to an

independent external research

institute team that collected data

from available sources and

examined nominations based on

different criteria.

Quoted from the GBM page, the

award of Global Brand Award

aims to give an appreciation for

the performance and rewards to

companies in various sectors

that have performed amazingly

well in finance, education, hotel,

lifestyle, car, and technology.

The award also aims to create

awareness of the importance of

excellent service for a company

and reward its performance in

the form of the highest global

recognition.

INDONESIA’S BEST BUSINESS SCHOOL

#1ITB received the highest score

among other universities in

Indonesia, placing the school in

the top 201-250 universities

ranking for the Business and

Management studies subject.

The rank was released by the

QS World University Rankings,

the most trusted rankings

platform in the world. The

ranking aims to help prospective

students to identify the world’s

leading schools in their chosen

field, with the list of subjects

extended each year in response

to high demand for subject-level

comparisons.

Each of the subject rankings is

compiled using four sources.

The first two are QS’s global

surveys of academics and

employers used to assess

institutions’ international

reputation in each subject. The

second two indicators assess

research impact, based on its

citations per paper and h-index

in the relevant subject. These

are sourced from Elsevier’s

Scopus database, the world’s

most comprehensive research

citations database.

Earned the international

accreditation from ABEST21

(The Alliance on Business

Education and Scholarship for

Tomorrow, a 21st Century

Organization), SBM ITB was

acknowledged as the first

academic unit-based (a whole

business school) that

accredited among all

members of ABEST21 and

met all or most ABEST21

Management Accreditation

Standards and the quality

maintenance and

improvement of education and

research in the

aforementioned school are

very promising and excellent.

This accreditation

commences on 1 April 2018

for a five-year period.

Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Kadarsah Suryadi, DEA

inaugurated the Laboratory Technology

Building (LABTEK) XIV – The Freeport

Indonesia Business Research Center SBM ITB

on Thursday (14/12/2017) at Ganesha Campus

Bandung. The six floors building, with total area

of 5,482 square meters, is a grant from PT

Freeport Indonesia (PTFI).

The Head of Project Implementation Unit (PIU)

for the construction of LABTEK XIV – The

Freeport Indonesia Business Research Center,

Budi Permadi Iskandar, MSP., said that the

completion of the building was done in two

years. “The interior settlement is done with the

help of companies and individuals, among them

are Bank BCA, Triputra Agro, Bank BNI and

Bank BTN, Noni Sri Ayati Purnomo, Adrianto

Djokosoetono, Hatta Rajasa and Bakti S.

Luddin”, said Budi.

The building equipped with the sunlight

processing cells into electricity is one of the

smart building in energy sector. This system is

an extension of the Energy Management

Laboratory for ITB Engineering Physics

program. The amount of electrical energy used

can be monitored while the auditorium has

utilized a low-energy sound system to save

more.

TOMORROW, THE LADDER

ISN’T ALWAYS UP!

I was a typical Gen-X when joining the MBA

program in 2008 to get myself ready to continue

the token of leadership in the business of Baby

Boomers generation. Fought well to be selected

in the Microsoft’s Extra Potential program, I took

an international assignment in the U.S.

headquarter after completing my MBA journey.

Jumped to hardware industry to complete

software-hardware competencies for IT industry

by joining Intel Corporation, I kept climbing up

the corporate ladder. I thought I was well

prepared when the time and opportunity came:

to be on the top of the ladder.

And the wave of e-commerce struck Indonesia

in 2015. The rise of startups business

transformed the traditional industry into

something that both Baby Boomers and my

generation had never seen before. Ride sharing

was provided by Uber, Gojek, Grab, while room

and office sharings were served by AirBnB and

co-working spaces. Suddenly, everyone was

trading online as both seller and buyer in

Tokopedia and Bukalapak for used and new

items.

The secret recipe in doing business in a

structured way paved by Baby Boomers and

was (about to) be continued by my generation,

was disrupted. The digital-savvy generation had

a new way to capitalize internet to do business

more efficient and scalable, and to discover a

new niche of business that older generations

could not even imagine. I was trapped in a

disruptive world standing at the crossroads to

choose: continue the corporate ladder – or –

detour to join the startups hype?

Good news! The conventional businesses

survived but demanded a change. A lot of

today’s enterprises starts to invest in startups

(eg Astra invests in Gojek). Hence, paving path

in corporate ladder has a bright future. For

Gen-X leaders, today and tomorrow, the ladder

is not necessarily up!

I am now riding my wave on two startups:

Bizzy.co.id for B2B and FrameATrip.com for

B2C.

B2B arena is a blue ocean in Indonesia and

region. A lot of funding was invested in B2C

commerce and B2G; but not yet in B2B. The

race has an equal start and the mission of

Bizzy.co.id is to bring clean economy utilizing

technology to make B2B procurement

transparent, efficient, and accountable. We are

passionate to bring in e-Procurement

technology to the market from procure to pay.

What’s next? As projected, Indonesia would

have 141 million middle class affluent by 2020

who loved travelling and posting pictures in

social media. Thanks to the Millennials brought

traveling to a new spending trend beyond e-

commerce. Found that travel photography was

still in the blue ocean, we established

FrameATrip.com in late 2016. We focus to

connect travelers with the local professional

photographers across 180+ cities around the

globe to make their holiday unforgettable and

get more likes in their Instagram.

Will I succeed? Hopefully. Not afraid of failure?

Of course, there’s a risk. But if I fail, I will be

one of the selected Gen-X talents with the best

of the breed competencies: corporate athlete

and real-life startup experience. More

importantly - my ladders are not only one. Not

only up but left and right too! From a game

theory perspective learnt in BLEMBA 10 years

ago, my end game probabilities are all good.

“This program employs both case study and

action research approaches. While case

study captures tacit knowledge and how to

develop theories with contextual issues,

action research aims for active professionals

who want to conduct experiments in the real

world.”

“I will execute the business direction based

on research result and using all parameters

and literature review from research as the

main reference for company decision-

making. Highlighting the action research as

the strength of DSM program, the method

helps me on combining theory with the real
