Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly.

In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters.

The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff.

The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go.

The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

16With no changes at the break the second half started with a flurry of chances for both sides. Firstly, Flett danced his way past three Parkgate players but shot wide from 18 yards. Then Richardson went close from a near post header but the ball was deflected wide. From the resulting corner, the ball was cleared only to Barlow who let fly from 25 yards out only to see the ball go inches over Baileys crossbar.

At the other end Alex Varley's acrobatic overhead kick came close to leveling the game but a vital

block inside the box was enough to prevent that chance. Just 60 seconds later Parkgate pushed f o r w a r d a n d looked like they should equalise but blocks from L i a m D i c k e n s , Heward and Flett prevented the ball from going into the net.

The Owls made a substitution on the hour mark as Louis Grant replaced B a r l o w . T h e impact was almost i m m e d i a t e a s Grant gave further impetuous to the Owls attack. Only 90 second after he came on, the ball was in the back of the net. A long run b y R o b e r t s o n c r e a t e d t h e perfect chance for O g l e s b y w h o smashed the ball past Bailey for his 46th goal of his

Owls career.

Parkgate tried to mix things up by making two quick changes but the Owls kept finding space in between the keeper and the last line of defence as they looked to punish the South Yorkshire side. Robertson had the best chance as he skipped past one player but a smart save prevented further celebrations for the Owls.

Two further changes for the Owls occurred with just 15 minutes left as Jacob Wilson made only his second appearance of his young career. Replacing Robertson. The second substitution saw Niko

Goodwin replace Lawrence Heward.

A professional last 15 minutes from the Owls saw them see the game out in style, playing keep ball and limiting Parkgate to long shots which did not trouble Steer in goal. The only sour note of the game came at the end when tempers frayed following a challenge inside the box but it was six of one and half a dozen of another as the Owls saw in the final whistle to take all three points back to Lincolnshire.

THE CONTENTS

Cleethorpes Town ran out 2-0 winners this afternoon over Rotherham based side Parkgate FC. Goals from Matthew Kingston and Jonathan Oglesby were enough to see the Owls over the line in a game where the Owls had over 20 attempts on goal.

The Owls made three changes to the starting line-up from their 3-2 win in the League Cup over Pickering Town last time out. Damien Steer replaced Brad Beattie in goal, Louis Grant was dropped to the bench and replaced by Brody Robertson and Lawrence Heward came in for the unavailable Richard Peck.

The Owls prepared for this game in interesting circumstances as their kitman had gone to the wrong

location and only arrived five minutes before kick-off meaning the Owls had t o w e a r Pa r k ga t e ’s away kit to warm up in.

It was nearly the perfect start for the visitors after a long punt forward from t h e O w l s defence was latched onto by Robertson but he just could not add to his tally of 2 2 g o a l s

already this season.

The early exchanges showed what a force the Owls can be at breaking forward and should of taken the lead in the fifth minute after Oglesby and Robertson linked well in the channel. Robertson squared the ball to Cooper but he scuffed his shot, which incidentally fell to Jack Barlow however he could not get the ball from under his feet and he was tackled and the ball was cleared.

The chances kept coming for the Owls. In the seventh minute Oglesby fired narrowly over the bar from a free kick on the right hand side, 20 yards out. The traveling fans did not have to wait much longer though for a goal as Kingston broke from defence, space opened

up for him and he arrowed his low shot into the corner of the net sparking mass celebration both on and off the field.

With the Owls tails up, they went in search of increasing the lead and thought they had won a penalty with 16 minutes on the clock after Barlow seemed to be hauled down inside the box but the referee waved away the appeals.

The first chance of the game for Parkgate fell in the 20th minute, as a long ball forward was chested down brilliantly by Andy Dawson but his finish could not match the build-up as he shot wide, to the right of Damien Steers goal.It was not until the 30th minute that the net notably action occurred as Cooper held up the ball well then he played Robertson in with a beautifully weighted pass but Robertson could not squeeze the ball past the advancing keeper as he smothered the ball well.

In an identical move just 45 seconds later but the two players doing the opposite jobs, Cooper was through with just the keeper to beat. However, he seemed indecisive with what he wanted to do and the keeper once more came out on top as he gathered the ball.

The chances kept coming for the Owls to increase their lead before the break as Robertson, Oglesby, Alex Flett and Cooper all saw shots saved by Jamie Bailey much to their annoyance. Going into the break and with only a slender lead the Owls knew they could not relax going into the second half.

G o o d a f t e r n o o n a n d welcome to the Bradley FDC and a warm welcome to the players, management and committee of Retford United Football Club. It was disappointing to see them with a few problems over the last few weeks but thankfully they have sorted out their problems and will be stronger for it.

On our own front it is fantastic to see us sitting in 2nd place at this stage of the season and testimony must go to the management and of course the players for doing a fantastic job.

Behind the scenes we have m e t t h e FA r e g a r d i n g p romot ion and g round grading which has to be sorted before the end of this season. This does bring it home how well this club has come in such a short space of time.

Onto todays game and like always we will have to be at our best to get a result as R e t f o r d w i l l b e n o p u s h o v e r s . T h e y h a v e experience at this level for many years and we will have to deal with that.

I hope you all have an enjoyable afternoon and cheer on the boys and hope fu l l y we w i l l ge t another victory.

JUNIORS

A classy performance from the girls saw them move into the Semi-Finals of the cup competition.

At last the girls put in a performance that was both excellent and had goals.

Too many times this season it has been one or the other. All 12 players gave 110% from keeper Alice with 2 great saves, the defenders of Jass, Megan, Abbie and Leah who where very solid, the midfield of Steph, Connie, Beth, Ebony and Caitlin who worked tirelessly up

and down the pitch with the f o r w a r d d u o o f Olivia and Charlotte c h a s i n g a n d harassing for every ball.

The goals w e r e scored by Charlotte (2), Leah, C o n n i e , Ebony and Steph.

Hopefully this motivates the girls going into the last two

months of the season with t h e d o u b l e s t i l l a possibility.

L a s t S a t u r d a y w e travelled to Parkgate in Rotherham for our first league game in over 3 weeks. It was always going to be a hard place to go to and g e t t h e t h r e e points but the boys got the job done. Parkgate m a d e i t p h y s i c a l but our b o y s a r e

coping with that side of the league no problem. I t i s g r e a t t o s e e Matthew Kingston on the scoresheet, his first

for the c lub. In additional a special mention must be said of Jonathan Oglesby, who has

now scored 7 goals i n h i s l a s t 8

appearances.

To d a y s v i s i t o r s Retford United are hav ing a tough time of late and

we must guard

against complacency but the league table doesn’t lie and we will be looking for

all 3 points.

Last week saw Jacob Wilson come on as a s ub s t i t u t e f o r t he s e c o n d t i m e t h i s season. We have high

hopes for the 18 year old and Marcus likes how he plays and will be one for the future.

The squad is in good shape at the moment and we are very happy with the quality we have on the f i e ld . However, never say never in football as you don’t know who might come available to us.

Going into todays game we have no injury or suspensions worries so expect a strong squad who are eager to come away with maximum points.

Cleethorpes Town 4Sleaford Town 0Sunday 4th January

The Owl's Ladies team played their first fixture of 2015 on Sunday 4th January at home vs Sleaford Town LFC. The reverse fixture finished 5-5 and the sides also met in the County Cup with Cleethorpes winning 4-3 on pens after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

The first half saw the Ladies dominate from the off with Sleaford looking to counter

attack. Ashton in particular doing well breaking play up and starting attacks off. Despite creating chances they were unable to break the resi l ient Sleaford defence and went in at half time 0-0.

The second half was pretty much the same but after great pressure high up the field Hopkin cut a ball out and got there before the keeper to slot home. After more great work from Hopkin, Charlton slotted home from the right and added a third soon after.

The final goal of the game came after some great pass and move football found Charlton who smashed in from 25 yards to make it 4-0 and also seal a hat trick.

A great team performance that saw everyone work and battle for each other with some great football played.

The Owls “A” team played Saturday in the league against Caistor Tennyson FC.

With Jack Gibbons in goal, Josh Garner and Harry Crawford at wingback, Tom Wingate was joined at centre back with 16 year old Joel Mann at centre back.

Dale Pratt operated just in front of back four with Paul Jones and James Sawdon centre mid and Connor Southern just off the front two of Mikey Milne and Jonny Willis.

A couple of minutes into the game the Owls found themselves one down after a through ball evaded their back four leaving the Caistor forward an easy chance to slot the ball past Gibbons.

The goal seemed to settle the Owls down with debutante Mann settling into the game well alongside Wingate. Jones had an attempt from a Sawdon corner cleared of the line as they pressed until Southern was brought down in the area with Captain Pratt scoring from the spot.

A great stop from Gibbons in the Owls goal and then a quality last man tackle from Mann stopped Caistor getting back in front.

After great work from Milne in winning the ball back and giving the ball to Jones who in turn slid Southern in one on one which saw Southern place the ball past the Caistor keeper to take the Owls in 2-1 at half time.

The second half saw Caistor break through were Wingate was unluckily adjudged to have caught the Caistor forward in the box resulting in a penalty being awarded which the Caistor forward sent Gibbons the wrong way to make it 2-2.

Danny O'Hare came on for his debut for John Willis and Mann took a knock which saw Mackenzie Overend come on in his place . As the game ticked on Gibbons made a great save changing direction after a deflection off Wingate could have caught him out.

Brandon Wood made his debut coming on for the tireless and impressive Milne. The winner came after

Southern was brought down out on the left, which saw Southern outfox the keeper sending him the wrong way and find the top corner for 3-2.

The Owls managed to run the clock down and seal the win in a game where either side could have nicked it.

With two debutants at 16 years of age, Joel Mann and Brandon Wood were very promising which are the sign of things too come was very pleasing and in total 9 of the 14 where 21 or under is pleasing too see.

Formed in 1987 by local man Brian Jackson, Retford United began life in the Gainsborough & D i s t r i c t F o o t b a l l L e a g u e Division Two before moving to the Nott inghamshire Footbal l A l l i a n c e D i v i s i o n Tw o t h e following season.

Seven years later, promotion was gained to the Not t inghamshire Footbal l Al l iance Div is ion One where they continued to play for two years until another promotion to the Nottinghamshire Football Alliance Senior Division. Jackson's h a r d w o r k a n d d e t e r m i n a t i o n secured a site on Leverton Road, Cannon Park, and he built up the clubhouse, and pitch from nothing, a legacy that will live long for years to come.

A struggle to stay in this division, Retford United were eventually re legated in 2000, but a new r e g i m e a n d a m o r e f o c u s e d

outlook gave Retford United the springboard that they needed with the acquisit ion of their current ground at Cannon Park, a short walk from the town and financial input from local businessman.

They le f t the Not t inghamshi re League that season and moved into the Footballing Pyramid with the Cent ra l Mid lands Footba l l League. Their inaugural season was successful against a higher s t a n d a r d o f o p p o s i t i o n , t h e Championship was brought back to C a n n o n P a r k , a n d a C e n t r a l Midlands League Cup Semi Final was a lso ach ieved under the guidance of former Everton and M a n c h e s t e r C i t y p l a y e r N e i l Pointon.

A consolidation period in 2002/03 as United played in the Central Midlands Supreme League, losing out after a fixture backlog at the end of the season, they finished a

respectable 3rd, but the following season was one of the biggest years in the clubs history, breaking records at both club and league level.

Under the guidance of Paul Hyde, in 2003/04 Retford United were crowned Central Midlands Football L e a g u e S u p r e m e D i v i s i o n Champ ions , p romo t i on t o t he Northern Counties Football League was granted, but to go with this, for the first time in history the treble was achieved as United were winners of the League Cup and Floodlit Cup. This still remains an unprecedented feat. The team were a force to be reckoned with, and an appearance in the Notts Senior Cup Semi Final was the furthest the club had reached in this competition, losing out after extra time to Hucknall Town, who would go on to win the UniBond League P remie r D i v i s i on tha t season.

BEST SEASON:

In 2007/08 under the guidance of Peter Duffield, the club won the UniBond League Division One S o u t h C h a m p i o n s h i p b y a massive thirteen points, gaining 99 points in total. Added to that was the Chairmans Cup, in a North v South challenge against B rad fo rd Park Avenue where United ran out 2-0 winners.United had a strong run in the FA Trophy, before going out at the First Round stage at Histon FC, but they did win “Team of the Round” for their performance in an earlier round.

The club did achieve promotion the following season, repeating t h e i r s u c c e s s o f t h e Championship for a second time in success ion to f ina l l y ga in promotion to the Premier Division. With this, they lifted the Notts Senior Cup for the first time in their history, beating Eastwood

Town at Meadow Lane, the home of Notts County FC. Retford also made the final of the Chairmans Cup, but were beaten by Durham City. Their first season in the Premier Division almost saw them reach the play-off’s but lost out in the final weeks of the campaign, M a n a g e r P e t e r D u f f i e l d announced his resignation shortly before the end of the season, but still guided the Badgers to the League Challenge Cup Final in which they lost to Boston United, and the Notts Senior Cup Final, w h e r e t h e y w e r e b e a t e n b y Eastwood Town.

A summer of re-building saw Brett Marshall return to the club as Manager as the Badgers were v o l u n t a r i l y d e m o t e d t o t h e Northern Counties East League P r e m i e r D i v i s i o n , a n d w e r e crowned Champions in their first season. Promotion was denied by the FA and more changes in the

summer saw Marshall and the playing squad leave with the Club a p p o i n t i n g R i c h a r d S e n n e t t , formerly with Winterton Rangers as Manager to lead the club into the new season.

A new First Team Committee was formed as the club looked to stabilise cumulating in another successful season in 2012/13 as Retford earned a fourth place f i n i s h i n t h e N C E L P r e m i e r Division, pushing the top three to t h e w i r e – a s u p e r b f e a t considering that a whole new squad had to be assembled in the summer.

2013/14 Retford finished in 9th p l a c e i n t h e N C E L P r e m i e r Division and changes were made for the 2014/15 season with Paul Ward stepping up as Manager to take Retford United into the new season.

7th February, 2015Badgers continue to rebuildRetford United have announced that caretaker boss Rich Williams will stay in the role until the end of the season as the Badgers continue to rebuild the club's first-team set up.

A new interim committee has also been established by the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division side as they look to move forward following the resignation of the previous committee last month.

A statement on Retford's website said: "We would like to thank the fans for their patience over the last three weeks while we have been working behind the scenes to put things in place to see the club through the final three months of the season. Your continued support is very important to us as we try to guide the club through this difficult period.

"A new interim committee has been appointed with club chairman Bill Wyles having asked Brian Jackson to serve as vice chair along with Ian Beech and Robin Robinson from the supporters club. Rich Williams will remain as secretary but will not hold a vote on the new committee at this time due to his involvement with the management of the first team. The supporters club will continue to look after hospitality and the general running of home matches, Bill Wyles will continue to operate the clubhouse. In further news, Bill Wyles has today contacted all those who have applied for the manager's job at the club and informed them that the committee have decided against appointing a new manager at this time. Rich Williams has been asked to continue in his role as interim manager until the end of the season whilst the new committee decide on the future of the club. Rich will retain Ben Muirhead as assistant manager and U21s manager Chris Woodhead will also serve as first team coach."

20th January, 2015Change of ownership at GarforthGarforth Town have announced that there has been a change of ownership at the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division club.

A statement released by the Wheatley Park Stadium side said: "We are pleased to announce that, after negotiations with the previous owner, Garforth Town Football Club Limited has sold the assets to a new company which was formed at the start of the season.

"The club is now owned by Garforth Town AFC Limited under the management team of Brian Close, Jane Close and Craig Bannister. A big thank you must go to Rupert Lowe and Mike Thomson, his Financial Controller, for supporting the club financially during the last two years since taking over the running of the club in 2012. It should go on record that, even up to a few weeks ago, Rupert was having to cover historical debts. Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs were days away from closing the club when chasing unpaid tax and National Insurance which remained unpaid from the previous ownership.”

Luke, We are doing well in the league, did brilliantly in the FA Cup and the FA Vase, give us your thoughts on the season so far.I think we are in a good position at the minute however there is still a long way to go so you never know.

You have played in most of the matches so far this season, what would you say has been your toughest game?It is hard to say because every game is tough. We just don’t know what any of the teams are really like.

Which one of your 2 goals so far this season was you most pleased about scoring? My second goal was my best for sure. It was a header against Nostell in the 5-1 win back in October. It was an important goal at the time as it gave us a two goal cushion in the game then manage to close it out in style.

Playing with some of the best players in the county must be great, but tell me who you think has been the best this season and why?I think Daz (Hanslip) is a massive player for our team, not only is he our captain but he has been awesome but saying that so have all the lads this season.

I have seen you getting involved with training some of the younger ones at the club, is this something you would like to do once your career is over?

I haven’t thought about it to be honest but I do enjoy it so we shall see.

You played as a winger most of last season but now your more accustomed to been at the back. Which position do you ultimately prefer?I would rather play on the wing but am just happy to be in the team.

You are now 4th in the order of most appearances for the Owls, having played over 80 times, how does this make you feel?I have made a lot more than that if you count all the Lincs League games I have played but I have thoroughly enjoyed myself at the club so far.

You come across as someone who gets easily annoyed on the pitch, is this a trait you carry off the pitch?I’m a calm sort of guy. (This was followed by “haha”!)

Your only 25 and still have a long career ahead of you, what are your realistic expectations going forward?Just to see how far we can go.

Lastly, where do you think the Owls will finish in the table?I think a top 10 finish would be good in our first season!
