“We Gather Together”
==================================================================================================
King David! Still “No Comment!” about Uriah’s Wife?
YOU MISS OUT ON SUMMER AT CHURCH—YOU MISS OUT ON A LOT! As I write this, we have just begun our summer worship schedule, with all of us gathering together to worship each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Some Sundays, our worship will be in contemporary language, code-named Rite II by Episcopalians. This is like the worship at 10:00 a.m. during other parts of the year. Other Sundays, our worship will be in traditional language, code-named Rite I. This is like the worship at 8:00 a.m. during those parts of the year when we have two services. This gives those who come to one service on a regular basis the chance to see how “the other half” worships, and maybe learn something from the experience.
Some people treat church like school—once the academic year draws to a close, it’s time for a vacation from church attendance, too! These folks miss out on a great opportunity to hear and contemplate some of the great stories/lessons from the Bible. And that’s especially true this year! Over the course of this summer, our first lessons will tell the story of the height of the united kingdom of God’s people in the Holy Land, during the kingships of David and his son Solomon. We will also hear the stories of how the kingdom came to be, and how it fell apart afterwards. These are exciting sagas of the history of God’s people and include many aspects of the life of the kings and royal family that would not be included in an official biography or history today. This is Reality Scripture, a period-piece telenovela (“Holy Soap Opera, Batman!”), laying bare the good, the bad, and the morally ugly of ancient Israel. Join us at worship this summer, and hear the stories of people who were involved with:
• good (and bad) leadership choices by the Israelites;
• the classic story of the little guy triumphing over the international bully;
• mental health issues at the top of the royal household;
• occult practices and their consequences;
• a LBGTQ relationship in the king’s family—or was it?;
• public exotic dancing by the king which scandalizes the queen;
• a forbidden adulterous love affair and murder by the king himself;
• royal marriage arrangements they didn’t teach you about in Sunday School;
• subversion and rebellion in the royal household;
• death and disfunction in a codependent family;
• sexual assault and revenge murder in the royal family;
• infighting for the royal succession;
• what the king really wants from God;
• erotic royal poetry;
• and much more! And that’s just the story of those in the first lesson! The other lessons speak to us as Christians today just as strongly. There’s a lot of good food for thought in our lessons this summer. We must remember, though that all of this is not there merely for our voyeuristic pleasure—these are people just like us, and their lives teach us about our lives and our relationship with God. So how does all this help us grow as Christians and human beings? Come join us Sunday by Sunday to find out!
