Evaluation of the Benefits of Using Semi-dry FGD and it Solid Waste Treatment on the
Environmental performance of a Power Plant

Coal Power Plants produces tons of ash daily. When dry Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) is
adopted ashes are contaminated with CaSO3 and have to be disposed on landfills. To turn thisresidue useful, e.g. to the cement industry, there are 2 options: (1) stop using the FGD (if the
local SO2 emission limit is respected) or (2) making a treatment of the solid waste (e.g. CaSO 3
oxidation). Environmental Impacts of both options were compared. Firstly, the global mass
balances for both cases were performed. The generated streams inventories were used as
input of WAR algorithm and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). Additionally, Green Design Criteria (GDC)
and Sustainable Metrics were estimated. WAR results demonstrated that the alternative (2)
reduced the rate of Potential Environmental Impact (PEI/h) of the plant in 46%. Photochemical
Oxidation Potential and Acidification Potential were the more expressively reduced impacts
(93%). The LCA, GDC and Sustainable Metrics lead to similar conclusions.
